Thanks Rob! Actually I started with Steve in 1996 - '02. Then I joined and produced two albums for Andy Milne's Dapp Theory '02 - '07. Then rejoined Steve in 2012 - present. Please visit thericklessons.com/ therickrocks.com/

Sean Rickman teaches you how to count. There will never be another drummer like him.

Was totally into M-Base since the first albums. Mark Johnson is an amazing drummer too. World Expansion has to be a favourite album

That opening blew my mind. Have always been a huge fan of all of Coleman's beastly drummers. Smitty, The Rick, and Mr. Lake, in particular. Each of the above elevated Steve's music in their own special fashion.

How interesting. You're Rich Brown's brother! That explains some things. You're as uncannily smooth on the drums as your brother is on the bass. Loved your brother's bass playing for years with Andy Milne! I've lived in the DC area for a several decades now and have known Mr. Rickman for years as well. As long as I've been here he's been a local musical celebrity and it's great that the wider world got to appreciate his talent and dedication to the art of music, not only with Steve but also Meshell N'degeocello, Shawn lane and others. He's also a great composer, songwriter, guitarist and bass player. Most all of us who are drummers in this area admire him greatly as a musician.
Yeah, M'Base! What can you say except that under the driving force of Steve Coleman a truly strong and amazing sub-genre was created. Also notably connected to the M-Base camp through Andy Milne is drummer Mark Prince who is actually the drummer on Andy's first 2 releases and is truly in a league of his own (check out Andy Milne's Cosmic Dapp Theory - The New Age of Aquarius).
Big ups for widening musical awareness.

Steve is actually from Chicago and the M-Base crowd began working together in NYC, but everything else you said is pretty spot on.

    Rob!!!
Great post......just a quick note for clarity...
The Dapp Theory album, Y’all Just Don’t Know, actually featured 2 drummers, Sean Rickman and Yours Truly. Mark Prince played drums on the 3 tracks on the album that featured Bruce Cockburn on Lead Vocals.
There aren’t any liner notes on iTunes or Apple Music, so it’s easy to miss.
I also had the pleasure of playing and recording with Andy Milne for 6 years between ‘95-‘01, playing music steeped in the same tradition, philosophy as a lot of the Five Elements material.
Andy’s first two albums are really worth checking out as well:
Forward to Get Back (1997) and
    New Age of Aquarius (1999)
Keep up the great work, Bro.
    Mark Prince

Good lord, Mark. I done dropped the ball too many time in this video, man 😩 I was super slackin on the research here. So sorry to have missed that important information. I feel horrible now! I don’t have the physical CD anymore so I didn’t remember that before I mentioned that record. Don’t think you haven’t been a massive influence in my development either, brutha ❤️

The respect and love you show for music and musicians is beautiful Rob. You get me hyped for music i never thought i could enjoy because it was pretty far from where i come from musically. I think i just realized YOU have become one of my Heroes not just through your amazing playing but also your way of looking at music.
Thank you for all the inspiration and wisdom!

I first heard Marvin Smitty Smith with Dave Holland. Steve Coleman was in that band as well, with Kenny Wheeler on trumpet. Great show.

Great video. Always great to come across videos on Steve Coleman and especially so when the feature is on drummers like Sean Rickman Smitty Smith and Gene Lake. Sorry that you didn't feature Dafnis Prieto, Marcus Gilmore and Tyshawn Sorey who played some amazing stuff equal to anything played by the three drummers featured after Sean Rick man left Five Elements. Also missing is the original Five Elements drummer Mark Johnson. Steve Coleman is from Chicago.

heya, by far the coolest groove drumming from gene with coleman (for me), is with the rappers live in paris 1995 / the way of the cipher. the drum sound from that gig surpasses the albums for my taste.

Rob, thank you so much for this information - BTW, I’m one of those who have never heard of Shawn Rickman...wow, what an oversight!! Question: how would you recommend first approaching odd time playing? Is listening to the albums you’ve recommended and just sitting down behind the kit and diving in a good first step? My odd time playing sucks and I want to get better at figuring it out! Thanks.

    • @RobBeatdownBrown
      @RobBeatdownBrown  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yea, man. Trying to decipher Steve’s music without at least a basic understanding of odd time will be difficult. Like being a tourist dropped in the middle of a foreign city. I’ll do some tutorials on odd time soon. It starts with getting comfortable counting and playing in 5, 7 and 9.
