    Again, really appreciate the history you give on these flies. Great how a department store had an in-house fly tier, and someone would come over on lunch to watch.

    Interesting history & nicely tied. Maybe a distant relative to a Stimulator? I’ll bet you could increase the size for when you see stoneflies in the air. If you want the floss to stand out more, you might want to use white thread on the body under the floss, & then switch to black after tying off the floss.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, good call Bob. Ken mentioned the same thing. I always think of those things after I'm done tying or recording. Fly history has such a muddled past sometimes. When did Kaufmann come up with his stimulator? I can't recall without looking it up. But I'm betting it was after 1945 when LaFollette came up with this one. And what did the one that he saw Audrey Joy tying look like? Did she come up with the palmered body? Or was that something LaFollette added? We'll probably never know. I'm not sure, but I think a lot of palmered flies like this or the stimulators were inspired by the soldier palmer which has been around for at least 300 years.

    Good morning Matt. Excellent old fly today. Enjoy the history of these oldies and the neat part is that between appearing in books or here on the channel the story and the fly will be around even longer. Suffering through a bit of cold snap here at the moment. Hasn’t been above freezing for a few days. Southern part of the province is supposed to get heavy snow. Supposed to miss us 😀. Warmer weather is supposedly on its way.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well I'll keep my fingers crossed that it misses you John. It has been in the low 80s here this week (quite warm). I think spring is officially here... I just took the heaters out of all my rabbit and chicken waterers. :-) And I like your thought that making videos of some of these old semi-forgotten flies will help keep them around for another generation or so. You never know what 10-year-old kid is watching them today, who will turn out to be a master fly tier and author 30 years from now and will include one of these that we kept alive. You never know. :-)

    This fly was sold in many places in the nw during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s and named the Montana buck, and I still have some
    In my fly box. The Falk was that also saw sold around the nw had a royal coachman body with coarse white deer wing tied caddis
    Just as you tied your version. Seeing these old patterns turn up is lots of fun, and looking forward to more. Brings back good memories.

      I agree Philip, it is very reminiscent of a stimulator. Just doesn't have the big front hackle like the stimulator would. But then again, the EHC doesn't have a tail either. So it's kind of a mix (or a precursor) of a lot of more modern flies.

    Cool dry fly! Looks like it could work during the Great hex hatch! The only modification I might incorporate to the fly would be painting the butts with white or neon green glow in the dark paint for early morning or late evening into the night for visibility. The hex hatch is pretty heavy after dark. Just hit the glow in the dark hot spot with white light for 30-45 seconds and you can swing that fly all night with periodic recharges. The hot spot will help you identify takes if you fish after dark. In addition to the elk\deer hair wing butts, it works well on parachute flies as well on top of the post or paint the top of a deer hair body and the post. Thanks for sharing Matt! Cheers!

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think this was mostly tied for trout Mark, and in waters where a caddis or big stonefly might be hatching. But if you fish it in terrestrial season, when grasshoppers are around, you could certainly use it for warmwater fish like bass and panfish. Or in some rivers that are cold part of the year and warm in the summer... these will often have panfish that are familiar with caddis flies as a food source.

      It's hard to say Richard. It could very well be, or the precursor to the Sofa Pillow that might have inspired the Stimulator. Some of us were mentioning in other comments that they all may have been inspired the the Soldier Palmer which is at least 300 years old.

    It's got GPT tailing so it has to be a good one.

      Thanks John! I'll check that email later tonight when I get done tying. I'm trying to get two videos done tonight so I will have some to publish when I'm out of town next week. :-)

      Ha! They're sitting on the table right beside my bench. You can actually see it in the videos... it's the one off to my right under my fur/tail wall. Maybe if I could get used to using the gloves, I wouldn't have to clean my fingernails every night before recording a video!
