For the last few weeks, youtube allows me to have my initial comments mostly visible but my replies rarely visible to others. In case you can't see it, here's an alternative suggestion: Laptop.
You might have a laptop with a DVD or blu-ray drive already. They're so slim and rarely used, people often forget they're there. Then you just need a HDMI cable to connect to the TV. Don't spend 20 dollars on a cable with gold plated connectors when a 2 dollar cable does the job just as well.
If your laptop doesn't have a HDMI port, then it will have a Displayport or mini-HDMI or USB-C/Thunderbolt or DVI, in which case there are cables or adaptors between them all.

Oot and aboot! Well, I think your Spanish sounds very good actually! There's a lot of ambience to these walkabouts and I think they're going to be very popular.
As for the lack of DVD players, I wonder if they are taking it too literally. Most staff everywhere are quite unapologetically unknowledgable about the products they stock. If it doesn't say "DVD player" on the inventory list, then it isn't one, and there are zero incentives for lateral, let alone autonomous thinking, as you well know!
Have a look yourself. Usually when I go asking for anything in any shop, whether it be hardware store, electronics, whatever, they seem to have a default reflex response of "No, don't have!", like they're proud to be so certain they don't have what you want before you've hardly said what it is you want. Many go one step further and rhetorically ask why you'd want whatever it is anyway, as though you must be mad. Then when I look on the shelves and show them that they do indeed have, they get defensive and hostile, try to find reasons why that's not it, redefine words, that must be a mistake, whatever.
Anyway, you might have got a different answer if you'd said blu-ray, who knows. There could be cultural things where a slight change in key word changes perception. There would be still portable blu ray players for cars that also play all movie formats from USB stick. All blu-ray players play dvds. There are likely game stores that sell second hand consoles. Get an old playstation (2 plays dvds and 3 and up plays blu-ray as far as I remember) or xbox. Just get whatever's cheapest. It could be that new xbox one basic are cheapest, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are shops there that sell knockoff clone copies of games consoles and known-brand players.
If you are looking to get a standalone player, Panasonic are probably the most dependable but videophiles used to rave about Oppo brand.
