  • Hello, it's me, queen of weird zero waste swaps (weird to society, I don't think they're weird). Let's check out Boaty reusable tissues and I'll give a full hankie review. We will talk about how to wash reusable tissues, how to store hankies, and the benefits like waste saving and money saving. Nothing beats saving the earth other than maybe save money by living zero waste, too ;)

I just use old t shirts in this way - cut up into hanky size bits. They are layered into a old huggies wipes plastic box and we haven’t bought tissues in at least 10 years

Hankies are so comfortable, especially when you are sick, because the regular toilet paper just hurts so much. Also broken T-shirts, snip snip and you have reusable tissues

My son CONSTANTLY wipes his nose or face (Meal times) on his shoulder. We have cloth wipes in several places in the home already but I didn't want the open basket all jumbled and in the middle of my dining table to make him stop. Will see about getting a nice tissue box and putting that there instead so the kiddos can grab one for spills or faces without having to get up and, subsequently, distracted. And my oldest doesn't have to keep staining his clothes.

People are used to everything simple, easy and disposable. Back in the day, there were no sanitary pads, Kleenex, toilet paper, napkin and paper towels. I went nearly paper free since the Pandemic with paper shortage. Most of mine come from Etsy sellers. I only use recycled paper items when absolutely necessary but all else has been replaced with unbleached cotton birdseye. I'm not a big fan of fuzzy flannel for my body parts or paper towels. I love this. I will never go back to paper again! I only use bamboo toilet paper for #2. I don't keep cloth TP in the guest bath for obvious reasons lol.

when I was a child in the 90s, we used cloth handkerchiefs at home, which were washed in the washing machine, my father still uses them

My dad also still uses cloth handkerchiefs. I have about 5, from when I was a kid. I also remember being small and not having all of these disposable products, cloth diapers, handkerchiefs, napkins and cleaning cloths. I need to start using the cloth handkerchiefs again, we use all the rest.

For people who are grossed out by washable hankies or tush wipe, ask yourself this: Do you wash your panties or throw them out after you wear them? How is washing panties different from washing a rag? If you are really squeamish, use cloth tush wipes for pee and throw away paper for poo. For those of us who live in the boonies with a septic system, it’s better than flushing so much down the loo.

What if you have house guests, or live with someone? I can't make my guests use something I whipped myself, nor whipe myself with what they used. Its like buying used underwear from the thrift store, sure its washed, but who knows what was on them before. some detergents can't get out certain germs and viruses 💀

HIgh school sewing teacher here coming atchya with a technical question… what are these Boaty reusable tissues made from? Could you please fill us on on the fibre/fabric used to make these? Also, how are they finished on the edges… what stops them from fraying? (Or are they made from a non-woven fabric that doesn’t fray?). Thanks in advance for this info. 💦🌎Ⓜ️ary🇨🇦

    • @TheSimpleEnvironmentalist
      @TheSimpleEnvironmentalist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

quite confident it's nonwoven since there is no seam on the edges! made from 100% cotton :)

I have been making my own "squares" / tissues for a long time now, i make them from old clothing that i can no longer wear. They last forever and i wash them with my regular wash and hang dry.

    I use my husband's grandfather's hanky! I'm pretty sure it's probably almost 100 years old now! 😅

We've been using hankies since 2004/5. I have roughly 40 because we're an allergy house. I love that there's no more tissue residue in the wash because someone did not empty their pockets. We keep ours in a plastic container on the side dresser, next to tea towels, serviettes and fabric cleaning clothes. To wash them I only toss them in the washer with everyday clothing. We only buy disposable tissues when 3 or more of us are really sick. When I need more, I just get them from BigW, Target or Kmart (yes, Australia still have Kmart).

I had c*vid last week and used my collection of second hand hankies that I've collected from thrift shops over the past 10ish years. I love them even though my partner says it makes me look like a granny 😅Probably cost me about £10-15 and they'll last me years more!

    Nothing weird about handkerchiefs 😶
My grandma and elderly aunts used to always have cute fancy embroidered snot rags 😄 ....my S/O got me into using a handkerchief because they always carry one around....they're just fancy like that 😊👍
They're also great for cleaning your face.

@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist I inherited most of mine from my grandma. 🙂
Some people think they're too fancy to blow your nose in them but that's what my grandma used them for so I don't have a problem with it.
