    We got a Drill Doctor for the shop, we tried it a couple times and just went back to either using a bench grinder or a belt sander. There's probably 2" of dust on that Drill Doctor now.

    Really like your channel! When I was about 12 years old my uncle showed me how to sharpen twist drills by hand on a bench grinder and produce a round hole. Its harder than you think! A real test is to take a broken drill, cut it off so the end is square with side and go from there. Keep up the good work! Im 59 years old and still love learning and laughing!

      I had a welder I was helping show me several years ago. Up until that moment I was under the impression that dull drill bits were trash and have thrown away many. The welders exact words were "trial and error, either it will drill a hole or it won't. And in that case, grind on it some more until it works. It's all about finding the correct angle". He had drill bits that were 2 to 3 inches that when new were 7 or so inches long.

    That's actually one of the first things we learned in trade school was how to sharpen drills by hand. They had a bin of "chowdered" drills. You had to take one, sharpen it, drill a hole in some scrap, and turn them both in. FFW about 20 years, I work in a machine shop with all the latest gadgets and cutting-edge tooling and technology. Know what happens when you have to have a particular drill and some dumb fuck chowdered the last one, didn't order any, and put it back in the drawer? You sharpen it by hand. Word to the wise: DRILL A TEST HOLE FIRST!. If you don't grind it right, it will drill oversize.

      I used to work an Acme Gridley multi-spindle screw machine. To get the right hole size, we'd grind a drill bit slightly off exactly for that reason. You might need a couple of extra thou' and that would just do it.

  • @Satchmoeddie

    If I am doing a shut down, I am bringing in new drill bits by the gross. You can also use a chop saw with an abrasive blade to sharpen bits. I learned how to sharpen bits as a hired electrical hack under contract for Proctor & Gamble at a laxative factory. They sold trainloads of that stuff to Australia. Them Aussies must be really constipated. What they did not send down under got made into Metamucil. When they made batches of the orange stuff, it stained my contact lenses orange. Nothing like having that liver disease look in your eyes!

    • @MrGoatflakes
      @MrGoatflakes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's a generational thing. All our old people are 100% absofacklutely convinced that they will die of cancer of arse explosion, idk, if they are the slightest bit "irregular". Whatever that means. Me, I take metamucil to _stop_ shitting. I had me gallbladder out in diddly 3. And since then I'm lucky if I have 2 consecutive solid shits a year. But metamucil makes it less like battery acid. Apparently it's one of the many charming side effects of a gallbladder removal my surgeon or doctor didn't think it was a good idea to tell me about. And I worked that out myself after seeing the same fucks for "irritable bowel" for more than a decade. Still, I suppose it's better than the feeling you get when passing a gallstone, which is akin to having a 2 by 4 hammered through your chest 3 inches right of your solar plexus...

Today in work I snapped my good 10mm HSS and the only other one I had was so blunt it couldn't melt its way through PVC, let alone cut through steel. The only thing I had handy was my grinder and I was able to get a fairly decent edge on the old bit, enough to get the job done. Saved me a headache, nice one.

    I've never seen a machinist use a Drill Doctor. I have seen them use disk sanders a thousand times. Only time we sent them out was for the custom bits we had which had 2 or more diameters. Used for manufacturing; i.e., drilling through both walls of a tubular steel component with a tool and fastener head clearance hole on one wall and the thru hole on the opposite wall.

    Hi AvE, Yes in deedy, I took my 4 year formal Machinist Apprenticeship at Jorgensen Steel in Seattle Washington. One of the first things we had to do was sharpen a 3" drill off hand on a pedestal grinder. I know, and, you probably know that by orienting the cutting lip just slightly up at the periphery, will properly orient the chisel point. Drill nomenclature. You can of course use a drill pointer gage, 59 degrees or 118 deg. included angle, for most bits. I am a sub to both you and The Post Apocalyptic Inventor. Your funny, but right on. If the chip comes out even your good on the lips, one side and their off. Obviously to much relief and the cutting edge will not hold up. Milling the potato was some funny sh*t. Happy Summer, be good, C.

    You grind em exactly like I do; light cutting edge grind and a delicate roll off the back to put tool relief on it. Don't mash the tip into the grind; don't heat it up and ruin the temper. Leave enough meat to get an aggressive cut on most materials. Excellent presentation.

    So much hate in the drill dr. I'm thinking the simplicity is too complicated for some. My dad gave me a drill dr 500x several years back. Finally decided to see if it's worth a damn.
    Can't just go up to a grinding stone but it only takes a minute or so, if that to sharpen a bit perfectly in the drill dr.
    It may not be something someone is brave enough to bring to a jobsite, but suits a typical homeowner very well.

    I was a track welder on a small railroad in northern Minnesota. One of the things I did was sharpen drill bits for drilling the web of railroad rail. This is carbon steel and nothing to trifle with. The methods in this video mirrored perfectly my situation in the field...although I did have a trigger lock on my grinders. The occupational language was very similar, as were the mosquitoes (and the cold in the winter). Granted, this is not first-line machinist method maybe, but it is what works when you have to get those bolt holes drilled so you can put the track back together, before the ore train comes...and the old man does not want you to stop the damned train because of a bolt hole.

      @February54 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lord Skitch But with a drill doctor, any monkey can sharpen a drill bit to a reasonable sharpness. With a grinder, you have to know what you're doing. But if you know what you're doing, the drill doctor is useless.

    • @lordskitch

      February I think it's got more to do with buying a single use tool as a way to not spend the time to learn how to do it correctly. And, in the process, screw yourself out of a good skill to have.
      'Tis no bueno to spend your life cutting corners. Even with the Drill Doc, I imagine the first handful of drill bits come away either god awful or a quarter inch shorter. With a bench grinder, or even a field-expedient crazy Cannuck contraption in a vise, the same thing's gonna happen, but once you've got it down, you don't have to have a special tool to get the job done.

    • @GunFunZS
      @GunFunZS 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      February Au contraire. At the shop I used to work at, the owner had his primate of a son convert most of our dull, but functional drill bits into useless bits of steel using a DrillDr. I am no master hand sharpener, but after trying the Drill Dr my self, I found that it prevented getting good grinds more often than it allowed them. Also it has enough wobble in the holder that grinds are seldom uniform from one flute to the next. Freehanding on a bench sander was honestly easier.

      Pretty much all I do is drill stainless. While I'm pretty good at doing them on the grinder, I got a drill doctor and like it.
      1: I use very expensive drill bits that are worth resharpening. Even smaller ones.
      2: Buying new drill bits takes money and time (more money).
      3: While I can hand sharpen beautiful 6 facet drills, it takes a lot of time (much more money). The drill dr is quicker. And I have to resharpen an awful lot.
      4: The drill docktor is more reliable than old shakey here from day to day.
      5: While busting out a bit on the grinder is quick, the flutes will not be even nor will the relief angle be right. While having the relief right is not that important for machine drilling, it really helps having it where you want it to be for hand drilling. 'course if you're drilling with uneven cutters, your going to be oversized and likely bell-mouthed.
      6: The next best thing costs $2000.
      That said the split point function is a bit of a joke. You want to go back to the grinder for those. And if you have a serious chunk out of the drill you'll want to rough it out on the grinder and finish it on the dr, since it has such a weak, slow grinder built in. I also got it with the idea that others in the shop could use it to sharpen bits because they can't do it on the grinder, but unfortunately that hasn't actually happened. Must be a life lesson there.
      It's easy to bad mouth the drill dr; any dummy can do that with a casual glance. Much harder to figure it out and see what it's actually for so you can properly criticize it.

      ***** If they simply had a few sizes of collets which were tight enough fitting (even lathed zamac would be fine) to actually hold small bits concentric, or put a unifor chisel onto a big bit, I would love the thing. I had a boss who expected inhumanly perfect tolerances from a pair of wobbly chinese drill presses. He could "see" from across the shop floor that one plate in a stack of 20 had a hole that was 1/128th off on cross square. My micrometer eye was never so sharp. Unfortunately,he couldn't see that his presses wandered by almost 0.125", that his stanley brand squares he expected us to do layout with would leave almost 0.25" gap if you put two of them together, that his level would give different readings by 5/16" if you swapped ends... So having a drill bit that was true enough to give a chance of a hole near the center mark would have made life a lot easier.

    I've had to do this so many times out in the middle of nowhere with a limited set of tools to work with. The 1/8" cutting disks work the best because they're gentle. If you're really brave you can relieve the web quite easily with the cutting edge of the disk too.

    Learned how to sharpen bits from an old mechanic who hated buying new tools. He would even sharpen down to 1/8 inch. I'm still not as good at it as he was but the skill has gotten me out of a pickle a few times. Like when I needed to drill a 3/4 hole with only 3 inches of work space. A right angle drill and a cut down bit with about half a twist left did the trick.

    I inherited a drill doctor and can actually get pretty good results w/ it on smaller drill bits. My eyes aren't too good anymore so the small ones are tough for me to get centered. It does take a little practice to get it down though. The larger ones like the HF silver and demings I do pretty well manually on the grinder and belt sander though.

    I have definitely used a grinder and cutoff wheel in the field plenty of times! Quick edit/hint- when you are about to come through the back of the metal just back off on the pressure until you are barely pulling little chips instead of biting a thick curly chip. Then it will pop through without trying to break your wrist or drillbit.

    When I started technical college for Manufacturing Technology the first thing you were taught was sharpening a drill. Not kind of, not sort of close, but a proper sharpening where the drill would drill the hole the size of the drill. The instructor would hand you a 5/8" drill with the tip flattened and you had to put a 118°, equal-length, equal-angled tip back on it with a bench grinder. I believe the course was designed to do this first lesson to eliminate those who didn't want to learn. I have an early Darex grinder that does an OK job but when I need to taylor the drill to a specific job I hand grind them. It's faster than the machine and just as accurate AND I can grind chip breakers to what ever extent I need…. Split-points? No problem! Take a 118° drill and put a 135° tip on it, no problem.
    Grinding drills should be a Manly-Man skill…..
