Dark Matter was mu favorite book of 2019, and it’s hard for me to even pinpoint why because I read many exceptional books that year. Maybe because I was expecting all sci-fi but I felt it had a romantic spin that I enjoyed even though I normally am not much for romance reading. I kept thinking about it and then in early 2020 I made my husband listen to it on audio with me.

Something to note about A Little Life, I DO NOT recommend this to anyone who’s going through something or who isn’t mentally/emotionally stable , this is by no means an easy read and it’s a hard hitting read.
Please be in a good headspace and place to read this , a lot of people go into this thinking it’s going to a good “sad story” but it can be traumatic for some so be aware.
Noelle here on book tube did a whole vlog about this book in case anyone’s looking for a deeper opinion

Worth mentioning that Flowers for Algernon was originally written as a short story before being expanded into the novel which is likely what most outlets sell, but just be aware you could potentially get a much shorter story than you might have expected depending where and which version you buy, especially short story collections. Both have their ups and down though obviously the novel has you more emotionally invested.

i definitely fall into the 'hate' category for a little life 😭 totally felt like trauma p*rn to me and i really lost all connection to the characters once i realised that! i just dreaded reading it and i think it took me like. a month to finish 🙁

Great topic! I believe you already convinced me to check out I'll give you the sun but A Little Life I do not yet have on my TBR! Torture porn, huh, interesting and intriguing because you made it sound emotionally torturous and I was like ohhhhhh. Lol. I can appreciate your desire for more stand alones.

If you could recommend one out of recursion and dark matter, what would it be?

I think Dark Matter is easier to get into! Personally it took me longer to get hooked by Recursion but the second half was right up my alley!

my favorite stand alone i think would be: "They both die at the end", "the marcian", "girl made of stars", "the Analyst" , "call me by your name", "1984" and yes, "i'ld give you the sun" :)

I had to read Flowers for Algernon in middle school and hated it (probably because it made me cry and I was a literal child and missed half of it), so maybe I'll have to try rereading it as an adult! My favorite standalone of this year is This Is How You Lose the Time War, but I'm having trouble thinking of anything else that wasn't a series!

What a coincidence, I just started Dark Matter because 1) I read Rebecca by Daphné du Maurier, my very first thriller, and enjoyed it enough to try a new one, and 2) because another youtuber mentioned that her husband - who doesn't read like mine (unless I read him books which I might kinda force on him haha xD) - actually read it and loved it (it's also her favourite standalone).
I tend to read mostly classics, so the writing style is quite blend to me, but it's fine, I'm just curious to know what makes this book so mind-blowing and interesting to so many people. :)
I can't wait to read Flowers for Algernon, it's also on my list! I love thought-provoking and moving books, so it's right up my alley. ❤️

8:25 yeah, I agree there's not much character development. But I like it that way because it was really realistic and generally how adults are lol. The characters are actually already mature and responsible nd the only development they need is getting past some problems with their feelings which happens.

I can't say that I hated Flowers for Elgeron(?). But I didn't like it eather. Didn't get emotional at all. The whole book just reinforced my belive that ignorance is bliss. And I was glad that main character become stupid again in the end. At least he also turned joyful again.

I have SO many issues with A Little Life, absolutely hate it. But just wanted to mention this if you are thinking of reading it : there is NO WAY I would ever recommend this book. Please be aware that this book requires every possible trigger warning. It is not just « sad », it is traumatic, very difficult to read and can be harmful to some. Please don’t read this if you are not in the right headspace or struggling mentally.

Fav stand-alone off the top of my head is In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan, a fast paced story about a boy who finds this other world as a 13 year old and each chapter is an year of his life in a camp kinda school training to be a warrior or leader, it's so hilarious but so sad at some points with my kind of snarky main character

the Martian is the BOMB DOT COM. I listened to it on audiobook and it instantly became my favorite of the year (2018), it's so compelling that I was lying in my bed, literally clutching my blanket bc i wanted to know what would happen next; and even with 3 minutes til the end you still don't know how it's gonna end
(but don't read the "companion" novel Artemis if you're a woman, yikes)
