when it comes to portable machines, 2014 is the golden year for getting a cheap and durable linux laptop. Haswell mobile CPUs were the last generation to offer a socketed upgradeable option, and some of these machines even support flashing a custom bios with grub embedded so linux boots quicker than ever. combine that with these machines being the first generation capable of taking ddr4, and they hold up extremely well even 10 years later
Linux is Awesome - and yes, it runs on almost everything - even an old 90's 16 bit Simple Microcontroller that kinda blew my mind, not Manjaro or Ubuntu, but it will in fact run on just about Anything.
from what I have personally experienced on linux mint, the versions of Wine found in the software manager are outdated. Same with programs like virtualbox, that I was finally able to get working after manually downloading and installing the latest version from their website. A similar solution is suggested for getting wine up and running. So, while that is annoying, it is all good once you go through that process and ensure you have the latest stable versions of the programs you are experiencing issues with.
That's why I had a ruff time getting stuff to work with wine. I was able to install some windows games using lutris and they ran fine/better with a bit of work
@@scroblen Lutris works better for sure, but sometimes it still could have issues if you don't have the latest Wine version and it tries to install it itself. It was my experience anyway that I couldn't get Lutris to work properly without needing to properly install the newest version of Wine first.
yes, it will depending on the distro, Linux will also work on a pc from 2006 or even 1996. i'd be really curious if some really old version of some distro would work on a PC from 1986, though
I play "FEAR" and "PREY" (the Native American game about Alien Abduction from way back, it's Good!) in Zorin, Windows Games just pretty much Work - which is why I'm surprised that it wasn't the Base System for SteamOS
