Speaking of a balanced heel… I have some 1955 shoe lasts and I love them so much because the shape is beautiful and the arches look actually arched and supportive for a 4” heel.
I think this is the big issue with most modern high heels, including reproductions! They are never arched enough to actually support the feet correctly, and the heels are often placed too far back, which results in pain (not saying vintage shoes were always comfortable, though!).
Those fabulous princess coats are almost impossible to buy because they use LOTS of fabric! I used 6.5 metres of wool coating, 1 metre of silk lining (sleeves, pockets, under-collar) and 6 metres of rayon poplin lining (body) for mine! M6800 lengthened to ankle all round.
I remember wanting to sew something like that, years ago. But...yeah. I looked at the cost of doing it in a nice wool fabric and decent lining material (and why bother, if the fabric isn't really nice?) and decided, my knee-length puffer jacket (also known as the 'wearable sleeping bag'), had to do for this here gal 😅

I joined the Air Force in 1978, and women were issued the most unflattering dress uniform! It had a short, boxy jacket which stopped right below the hip...ugh. Our hat was called a 'beret', but it was really a pill box hat, which we wore at the back of our heads . I was told years later, (after that awful uniform was retired), that it was styled after Jackie Kennedy's early sixties suits and pill box hats. NO ONE looked good in that uniform! Maybe Jackie could have pulled it off.
I'm so glad you mentioned about foot turnout in the photos. Lines can make or break a pose. A turnout will always look better. Start with 3rd position. Sickling the foot imparts weakness. A good source to watch are the Rockettes and how they "post up" when they take pictures.
I just bought a 1959 Montgomery wards catalog because l so enjoy looking at these fashions. I remember as a kid looking at my grandmothers sears catalog and trying on her hats and old slips, dresses. It seems that dressing up back then seem so much more enjoyable.
So enjoy these videos! It would be fun to see a Lane Bryant’s catalog as most folks don’t know that it was founded by a woman and has catered to full figured women for most of the 20th and 21st centuries😊. As a woman with “mama curves”, I enjoy looking at the one catalogue I own from them and seeing how things were styled for those with lots of lovely curves. Thank you so much for sharing!

My mother’s red coat in particular which was I think she told me a faux lamb’s wool made of very shallow loops that she was always careful not to snag. I still think the skirt lengths of the ‘forties and ‘fifties were much more flattering than any other era.
Missus here: Oh gosh, remember these days so well! Still have some of my Mom's accessories that match those on these pages. As someone in my mid 70's now, so happy for sweatpants, t-shirts, running shoes and sweatshirts!

I remember seeing all the pages and pages of girdles and bras and thinking how uncomfortable it all looked. Thanks for sharing. Brings back memories of my mom’s mid century clothes and accessories.

Your dad was born in 1957, my parents got married in 1958. My mum's wedding dress had a "circle" style skirt, ending at about mid calf. It's so unfair how people just looked good in photos from back then. Things were stylish rather than a trend for a month, so unfair! 😕😄
i have a tan trench coat from the 70s and now i'm looking for a black one- i found a black london fog trench that I've been fixing up but its too big on me, so i think once the pocket holes are fixed i'll send it back to the thrift store for another person to enjoy it more than i currently can!
I made a swing coat from a 50s pattern with a Really thick wool and I made a belt that works great! didn’t have enough fabric for long ties so I made it short and put two sets of hooks depending on how cinched I want to be. it does look a little thick but not enough to be bad😄

Both mum and dad worked full time and I can still remember my mums perfume, filling the home, when she came from work. Lanvin Arpege it was, unfortunately they've changed the receipt so it has to remain a memory.
When you pointed out the thin ties for men in that catalog it brought back memories of the Rooster ties my dad sometimes wore in the sixties. My mom bought them for him. I don’t know if he liked them, but I love them. I still like to look at them on eBay.
36:56-37:28 Yup the 1950s was the era/decade where the qipao/cheongsam got the "tight fit" that people still associate with it today. It has also been noted that tight-fit was inspired by the sheath silhouette that was popular in "Western" fashion during that same time It is also interesting to note that between these kinds of cheongsams, you see being sold in catalogs and patterns in U.S.A. You see there is a difference between them and the qipao/cheongsam made by professional tailors by Chinese in China and in the diaspora ( i.e. those living in Southeast Asia and the U.S.A.). Though not like these differences would be noted, especially by the sellers selling that kind of qipao/cheongsam . A few differences I can note is for example fabrics generally used, the collar shape and height, and the fact that by this era/decade cheongsam/qipao that was completely devoid of pankous (what most people would know or call "frog closures") were the most common in the 50s and even the 1960s.
Real cheongsam are STUNNING! At the level of haute couture for sure, and most often custom made for each customer, so extra extra perfect 🤩 I can only imagine the copies were not even close 😅

1948 was the year I was born. I was too young for those ladies garments then. Now I am too old for them (I have an old woman's body now). They would be beautiful on you.

Goddess still makes those strapless longline bras. They seem to be practicing creative photography to make them look less pointy than they actually are, but I've tried one on and they haven't changed the design since pointy was in.
What fun - I was born in 1956 and hated the shapeless 60's and 70's polyester clothes - I used to haunt the thrift stores and found incredible fitted dresses, coats and beautiful slips. I was never a conformist when it came to clothes. I wish I would of known how to sew but it was easy to find thrifted treasures.
Hello, I have question: What level of Pattern do I need to join to have access to the video of the Space Queen Dress? I love that dress. Also, can you recommend a French curve. The one I have from many years ago seems small to me. I'm not good enough to eye ball or draw free hand. It has been may years since I designed my own patterns. Fifty-Six to be exact. I was studying design, when I did the stupid 60s thing and quit school to work two jobs to put my husband through college. To say I have regretted that decision many times is an understatement. I once heard this styling rule, and to me it made so much sense. But it doesn't seem like people nowadays necessarily stick to it. I was wondering what your thoughts on it is? The rule is, that you'd always wear the thinnest and most delicate fabrics closest to your skin, and then you go rougher and thicker for each new layer you put on. So you'd never put on a thin top over a ribbed turtle neck as an example. Of cause you should always wear whatever you want, and rules are there to break. I just wondered if you adhear to this one? 😁

Whenever I see pillbox hats I remember how much Jackie Kennedy hated them but wore them because the milliners union donated to her husbands campaign.
