  • Looking to add a 3rd party router to your Starlink satellite dish? The Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X (model ER-X) is a great place to start! In this video, I do a complete setup of an ER-X with Starlink including setup of the WAN and LAN plus a static route so that you can see your Starlink statistics and use the Starlink app.

    Glad he got this video out. I have a ship date for my Starlink for the same date we plan to move out of town. I just got my Dream Machine today and 3 WiFi 6 APs should be here next week. I plan on having wifi at both ends of the house, the shop, and an outbuilding shed near RV parking. I can see the road with 1Gbps fiber but no way to get it to my new place. The local WISPs are bad and I have worked at good ones so I know the difference. It is also nice I work from home and also the fact that last year taught everyone that working from home is a real thing. Hopefully, I can convince my Dad who lives in the mountains to ditch Husenet and get Starlink soon.

      I attempted this by following the Ubiquity directions on their web site, but ran into at least two issues:
      1) Both my cable service's modem and Starlink router both use 192.168.100.1
      2) My cable modem's service uses DHCPv6 while Starlink does not yet.

  • @bentheguru4986

    Tip for beginners, use Eth-4 for WAN, use Eth-0 for LAN so now you can power the ER with PoE from your PoE network switch. The plug-pack can still be used for redundant power. Having ability to feed PoE up port 4 to a wireless radio for those on Fixed Wireless services. The real part missed here is a clear statement, these are routers, not firewalls. You have very little security. Should have just used a USG3 instead.

    • @jonpinkley2844
      @jonpinkley2844 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What would the USG protect against that the default firewall does not? See the screen at 03:24 where the WAN+2LAN2 wizard had "use default firewall" checked by default. This blocks any incoming traffic to either the router itself, or the LAN behind the router. I am not saying the USG is bad, but as long as a user uses the WAN+2LAN2 wizard, and doesn't open up ports with port forwarding, the only traffic allowed from the internet will be established traffic.

    • @tortue71
      @tortue71 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grey area here but I see people putting in Routers as Firewalls just like old Cisco's. Block everything from WAN is fine, but not much good if everything on the inside gets out making tunnels. Only need one naughty client inside to open the gates. Same with the love of people with Mikrotiks and other small-board systems, if you want a strong defense, you need balls (hardware), that simple.
      A good educator is say something like a Firewall UTM distro like Endian Community setup in transparent mode, put it behind your "Router/Firewall" and watcht eh traffic, you will be amazed how much crap comes flying through.

    The way that Starlink do DHCP from the dish can cause this static route to fail in some situations. I've found it's more reliable to create a pseduo ethernet interface on the edge-router and set this to have an IP on the 192.168.100.0/24 subnet.
    On an edgerouter you can do this with:
    set interfaces pseudo-ethernet peth0 address 192.168.100.101/24
    set interfaces pseudo-ethernet peth0 link eth0
    set interfaces pseudo-ethernet peth0 mac 00:02:03:04:05:06
    This then doesn't have the issue that it goes down if you loose satellite connectivity

    My experience has been the Starlink dish will, after some time, stop connecting to the satellite network if used without the OEM modem/router.
    It took a few days to a few weeks for this to occur, and restarts did not resolve the issue.
    Swapping out the OEM modem/router for an hour or two resolved the issue for me a dozen times or so before I gave up and left it in.
    I suspect either; the Starlink modem/router is occasionally needed to update the dish's software/firmware, or there are some kind of security measures in place related to this.
    How long have you been running your dish like this?

    • @brianash5096
      @brianash5096 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have this issue, and I've read of many other people as well. I was hoping this video would address it. I lose connection after a few hours or a day. Basically, what I've read is that when Starlink is switching satellites, it temporarily gives an address to your router of 192.168.100.x, with a DHCP expiration of 5 seconds. The router is SUPPOSED to wait 5 seconds, then refresh DHCP, and get a new IP address from the dish. For whatever reason, it seems that many routers are not expecting such a short DHCP expiration, and they end up not doing the refresh. So they are stuck with an IP that the dish doesn't like, and you get no internet. Unplugging the cable briefly then back in will make the router refresh, then all is well - until the next time. Very frustrating. I don't know if the 5 second refresh time does not meet DHCP spec, or if routers just aren't set to properly honor such a short refresh. I hope that it is resolved soon, though. I can't use the included router, because there is zero management of it, and I need to change the DNS server that is given to LAN DHCP clients. So I need a third-party router to be able to manage that.

      Private ip addresses like 192.168.100.x are not normally routed by routers out the WAN. Routers know that they are private addresses, so they don't pass them out the WAN. So adding the static route forces the router to actually pass the packets out the WAN.

      Having the same issue when connecting my router (Ubiquiti UDM-Pro) direct to the dish, bypassing the Starlink router. Do you find that leaving the Starlink router in place lets your router not have the issue? I hate having that extra device there, but if it makes my router keep connection, then I'll have to do it. The service is unusable with my router losing WAN connection every few hours.

    • @JeffWuerth
      @JeffWuerth 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianash5096 I have found that leaving the Starlink Router in line stops the issue from happening. Any loss in connection at that point is just the starlink dish reconnecting to another satellite. I can't be 100% certain, but my feelings are the DMP doesn't like the WAN changing, which happens when the starlink service connects to a new downlink location. connecting through the router gives me a 192.x.x.x WAN but the DMP seems to stay happy. Please let me know if you come across any fix for this issue, I would really appreciate it.

    @Crosstalk Solutions Do I get any problems when I plug starlink into eth0? Without a switch in between. Since PoE arrives there and the EdgeRouterX on eth0 can PoE does that somehow break the EdgeRouter X?

      Testing this unfortunately the Starlink power supply will not activate POE and power the ER-X. If you connect it to the Starlink power supply it will act just as a normal network connection and will not break the ER-X

      @@OllieHayman ok thanks can you plug the starlink Router in eth4 there is PoE out ? maybe it will get power up😂

      @@supergamer3186 Whilst this might be possible I would not advise it. I would say in almost all situations it's better to use either the included router, or the ER-X but not both.
      The Starlink app requires access to the dish to show configuration tab including configuration for the router. If you add the Starlink router behind the ER-X, it will not be able to access the dish and so this will not appear in the App. This is why I would suggest one, or the other.

      @@OllieHayman ok i will only use the edgerouter x anyway has a higher data transfer rate than the starlink router

      Hi, the Edge-Router X use 24 passiv POE and the starlink use POE+ (48V). So you can not use the POE passthrough of the edge router x.
      What you can do is use EdgeSwitch 8 150W which can deliver power for the edge max and the starlink.
      I think its the same as chris has build. One vlan with two powerts for the starlink (one 24v for edge max x and one or starlink) and then you don't need the starlink poe block.

      Its the internet, we catch everything. I thought it was funny you though someone wouldnt catch it. Also, You typed a .2 in when you were trying to load gateway after you change the ip on the edge router x also. I catch the weirdest things.

    Hmmm.. the Link you gave is just for the US for $ 59 …. Amazon takes twice as much but if you don’t live in the USA, you can’t get it for $59.

    Ubiquiti is no longer including a power supply with the ER-X.

    Awesome video Chris! Perfect as I’ve had an X laying around for a while next to an Aircube thinking of doing something like this with Nanos as WiFi bridge... BUT now I’ve got a Starlink registered to Carson City, NV and plan to test the roam to Lake Tahoe this summer... close enough it should work on my Truck camper. Using an EcoFlow Delta to run stuff. Thanks for ALL the Starlink love. instagram.com/p/CNblcweB-QZ/?
