You don’t tell your attorneys how to serve papers, they usually use a process server. The only reason they would do something this drastic is if she has been avoiding service.

I did something similar to my ex brother in law. He avoided being served for a long time. I even went to his girlfriend's apartment. So the last resort was to serve him at work. Oh btw...He was a State Trooper at the time. I served him in front of his Sargent. He was livid! So the moral of the story....stop trying to avoid it. You might get served in the worst place possible and in front of many people. Save yourself the embarrassment.

I once worked as a receptionist for a large co. A man walked in with a huge bouquet of flowers for a person who worked in the warehouse. I called him to the front and instead of flowers being delivered he switched to being served with documents for loan fraud. It was crazy to watch, but process servers will do what they need to do deliver the papers. He may not have known that was the method.

Your comment makes no sense , she has lawyers and she has a production office and yes they can wait at her home. She wouldn’t dodge a process server because this isn’t a divorce case , it’s a custody issues case, probably a modification. That process server was probably young and stupid. He embarrassed his company and embarrassed the law firm who was a client, not to mention the other celebrity client of the law firm. Trust me that process server is in big big trouble. Professional decorum is still a thing. I know everyone is running around like they can do whatever they want but news flash , you can’t. That client may fire the attorneys. That law firm is probably never going to use that process server again. That process server employee will probably be fired and will never be able to have a job in the legal field or court system ever again. Being a sneaky cheeky person may get you over in the short term but if you think u can get away with embarrassing powerful well connected people , then you have a lot to learn buddy. This is also a super easy way to serve someone papers: you've established who it is and they will clearly acknowledge receipt of the documents. They have more than likely tried several times and she was dodging them. They also have rules about when/where they can serve papers and while jumping the fence to your house is illegal, they can certainly find you in public. Plus, this is quite the sympathy piece for Olivia Wilde. I'm sure she'll spin it to positive PR for herself. (And I wouldn't be surprised if this was orchestrated, though I also wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't. Hard to say. Could be.)

Once you turn over documents to a process server, the decision to serve is left up to them. If the person being served is difficult to reach, uncooperative, and or refuses to accept it, some process servers become very creative. This one did a great job! He served the papers in a timely, effective manner. Regardless of how embarrassing it was, it was done effectively. That’s the whole point of hiring the process server.

The ex husband is not allowed to serve the papers. The court requires a process server to prove the papers were served. Contacting her team is also not allowed. She can easily say she never received the papers. This is why process servers need to hand them their documents directly. The first step is always their home. If they keep avoiding the process server, they then look for other ways to find them.
