White Ice and Flamingo Shad. Both very productive colors in clearer water. Blue moon burner shad have done really well for me as of late. Coastal Marsh High cotton is a winner but that is a whole new can of worms.
Chris Ong thank you! Strawberry wine is a color I need to use more often. I caught a ton on it last year and only used it a handful of times since then.
You did not mention light conditions. Sunny days in clear water I usually don’t want something with sparkle or glitter: go realistic. Murky and sunny: I would go dark without sparkle. Cloudy and clear: I go lighter with a little flash: bone diamond, that ice color, something maybe with some silver that captures whatever limited light there is. And now low light or cloudy and clear: something dark with some sparkle or flash. Maybe fire Tiger or something similar. I would use the bigger down south if the bait the fish are feeding on is bigger. Or maybe if ifs murky, the bait will have more of a presence moving through the water. Smaller if the fish are feeding on small shrimp, or baitfish. Smaller also if the water is more on the clear side.
Perhaps what has become customary with your videos is once again demonstrated with this soft plastics vid. Extremely informative, a topic that plays a part in every inshore anglers tackle box, well thought out, organized, concise as well as easily understood logic. If an inshore angler has a notion to follow some of your suggestions, he/she just may become more successful at their craft. You always do a great job, motivate me to continue to improve my own skill sets and make me look forward to the next trip on the water to implement a few things I have learned. Thanks Mike!
Man thank you so much. Definitely one of the best compliments I’ve gotten. It’s comments like this that make me love doing this. I really appreciate it!
We dropped South Coast tackle due to poor business practices and quality. I mentioned it in a video awhile back but didn’t want to bad mouth the man. Not my intention at all. Just can’t do business with them.
Texas Fishing Force Mike, the DSL website shows a “Southern Shad”, is that a 4th option or it that just another name for the original? Are there any tips on when to use each size; such water depth or something? To limit how many I have; I am better off with 3 size and just a few colors or 1 size in many colors?
John Houston so DSL has 3 sizes . “Southern shad” is the standard original size, Super Model is larger version and the “burner shad” is the small version. I use mainly the original and super model but will pull out the burners on occasion. I switch depending on the size of bait I see. If I see a lot of bait, I generally go to super model to get a bigger profile. I would suggest starting with a few colors is southern shad and super model and add from there. If I had to pick 5 colors to use, I’d go with color x, purple reign, pearl chartreuse, chartreuse flash and bone diamond.
@@TexasFishingForce when wading and changing touts the canoeman knot takes about 8 seconds to tie. I wade fish over in Palacios/ Matagorda area. Thanks for all the info.
Definitely my favorite lures. Always have trouble picking the right color to throw for the day. Very good informational video, one that I can look back into in the future. Thanks Mike
excellent vid, very informative . i recently started using artificial baits and i have been getting awesome results but still in the learning process. thanks for sharing your methods . i've been using AM lures, work very well, will try DSL next.
Hi Mike, Great educational video. I've been looking for one on this very topic for some time. Thanks for covering it so thoroughly. I took tons of notes...Here's a question: where can I find the pearl and pearl chartreuse? The Downsouth Lure website does not have them and I have not been able to find them. Your thoughts? Tommy
Are you talking about painted jigheads, like the red or chartreuse jigheads? I’ve used both and don’t see a huge difference in catching more or less fish so I generally stick to the traditional.
I prefer the super model. Easier to work in the water, better profile. I do switch to the regular shad when I get short bites or if I’m running with a spinner or popping cork.
Matthew C I was actually bummed I didn’t add dirty tequila to this list. Didn’t think about it until after I filmed. Great color. I like to use it in clear water.
What are your favorite Down South lure colors?
Blue moon is my favorite.
Spicy pumpkin chartreuse

Lately, TX roach and strawberry wine...
Loving the burner shad! Great video Mike!

Thanks for the video

What color do I throw when the water is green?
Natural colors or bright colors. Green water is clear water.
Which one are the best in the winter months
Depends on clarity but I like bright (chartreuse flash, victorious secret) or neutral colors like ( bone diamond, blue moon)
Will these work for freshwater bass fishing?
Yes they will!
Anyone hear ever fished in the Mississippi gulf coast what DSL colors do you guys recommend.
Great info here
Thanks man!
Great video thanks for sharing your info
Thanks for watching
Great info, appreciate the time. Will try this weekend.
What are the best colors for port Mansfield text fishing
A lot of guys like the red/white combo, I like darker colors.
Tks bro
What hooks are you using for the large and small lures? Weight and size
I found a rubber jerk shad Alabama leprechaun its green with glitter cant wait to try
That sounds awesome!
So what about South Coast Lures and the video you had touting them and them making your own lures?
We dropped South Coast tackle due to poor business practices and quality. I mentioned it in a video awhile back but didn’t want to bad mouth the man. Not my intention at all. Just can’t do business with them.
Mike, what color DSL would you use at night in Galveston without lights?
Thank you!
I’d probably charge up some glow in the dark. If not I’d throw pearl chartreuse.
Thanky Mike! I just started watching your channel, what part of the gulf coast do you mainly fish?
I fish from Galveston down to Baffin. Occasionally I’ll end up further but not often. Thank you for watching!
Which ones do you use? The Super Models or the Small Ones? Thanks
I use all 3. Mostly super model though

Good stuff. Liking Magic Grass in POC
I don’t use that often up here. Good color though.
Thank You for the great info. This is my first season using artificial. Also this year I went to my first fishing expo.
Hey Mike what is the best jigheads you use and weight when targeting redfish, speckled trout, and flounder using DSL?
I use knotty hookers jigheads. Weight depends on conditions and where I’m fishing.
Thanks mike for the info appreciated.
What is your favorite hook for rigging a DSL Super?
I like the knotty hookers from BAAD Marine
Been looking dsl pearl chartreuse or straight pearl. Are they discontinued
No, they sell them in most tackle stores. Bucees has them too
You the man. I fish very similar to you. Try a canoeman knot for your lure. Easy easy loop knot and it holds
I’ll definitely try that. I use uni or a loop knot most of the time.
@@TexasFishingForce when wading and changing touts the canoeman knot takes about 8 seconds to tie. I wade fish over in Palacios/ Matagorda area. Thanks for all the info.
Jason Jones my kind of knot. I’ll check it out for sure
Thanks u brother for the information u good fishing friend hope 2 👀u out there💪🙏
My go to colors are is White Ice or Chicken on a C. I have caught most of my fish with these.
Do you mainly use the Southern Shad or Super Model size ?
I find myself using super model more often.
Definitely my favorite lures. Always have trouble picking the right color to throw for the day. Very good informational video, one that I can look back into in the future. Thanks Mike
Thanks for watching, hope it helps!
Thanks Mike! I really like down south lures quality, caught a lot of fish on the bone diamond and color x.
Both great colors!
Texas Roach Limited? Do they offer these at Academy, or FTU?
I’m not sure, I bought them at Anglers Anonymous
@@TexasFishingForce is that in Galveston?

Super video. Very informative. Going to try to catch me some next week.👍
Thank you, tell me how it goes!
i been doing all this wrong, thanks for the information. i had a question though, do you combine colors on the jighead?...or stick to traditional
Are you talking about painted jigheads, like the red or chartreuse jigheads? I’ve used both and don’t see a huge difference in catching more or less fish so I generally stick to the traditional.
yes, sorry for not being specific. But thank you for responding. i guess i will stick to traditional jigheads. Thanks again for valuable information
What are you referring to as traditional jigheads?
Iv been having allot of luck off of magic grass .
Great color
great video mike, what model do you prefer, the regular or super model ?
I prefer the super model. Easier to work in the water, better profile. I do switch to the regular shad when I get short bites or if I’m running with a spinner or popping cork.
Man I love DSL, those are my favorite brand at the moment. I just caught my pb red fish last week on one.
Nice!! Congrats!
Leader or not
I use a leader when fishing for trout, no leader for redfish
U forgot about that key lime color those are really good!!
If it ain't 🐔boy's I ain't throwing it. 💯💯💯 appreciate the color tip though
So far it’s a skunk for me on artificial. I’ll keep trying though.
Really? Keep trying. Definitely worth getting them down!
Great information, thank you! Do you buy online from them?
I buy from Anglers Anonymous
Great job buddy well done big like 👍
Thank you!
Where’s that howells red wine though😂
Very good color. Same with candy apple. I left the red/white magic info out of this video. May cover that in the future. We'll see, lol.

Texas Fishing Force when should you use dirty tequila
Matthew C I was actually bummed I didn’t add dirty tequila to this list. Didn’t think about it until after I filmed. Great color. I like to use it in clear water.
Down south lure is my favorite lure, I love the way the tail moves, how easy they are to put on the jig and even how they smell.
That grape is amazing!
I didn't listen much. Sry
