I mean, the sonic Screwdriver has a psychic interface, so it probably uses that connection to just beam the data into the Doctor's head.

I really liked Jodie Whitaker as 13, but I still think it would've been a great call back if the first female Doctor was the one who finally got to fulfill 10's wish to be a ginger. They could've played it for laughs like she was so excited to finally have red hair that she didn't even notice that she was now a woman right away.

Once they got rid of John Sim, the Master got so good. The original is still iconic, but Michelle Gomez brought so much to the role and is now who so many think of when the Master is mentioned. And Sacha Dhawan is, in my opinion, the most unsettling and menacing of all the on-screen Masters (yes, that includes Delgado).

The only thing wrong with the sonic sunglasses is that there's no way to get a fun toy out of it, unless your idea of fun is a perfectly ordinary set of sunglasses with a hidden button that makes noises. It's much more fun to point a whirring screwdriver toy at things and put it away in your jacket pocket, as opposed to just holding a finger against the side of your sunglasses while staring. Also, do you buy a sonic sunglasses toy in child size (so the child will grow out of them) or adult size (so children can't get them to sit right on their faces)?

    • @SeeJay81
      @SeeJay81 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

@@SingularityOrbitapparently the shades were Capaldi's idea, and it doesn't have a toy on purpose. He wanted people (kids) who don't have much money to feel they could (cos)play doctor who without having to buy expensive toys. I hated the sonic sunglasses until I read that. "We do what the Doctor's friends always do. As we're told."
"When one is in love with an ageless god who insists on the face of a twelve year old, one does ones best to hide the damage."
River may have been closer to the Doctor's level than most companions, but saying their relationship "didn't involve a power imbalance" is a stretch.

    • @generalilbis
      @generalilbis 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

River's rant to the fishman concierge of the cruise for killers in "The Husbands of River Song" - where she openly acknowledges the issues of loving a god-like figure whose mission is to protect space, time and the Universe and who she believes can't love her back in the same way - shows that River's study of the Doctor has allowed her to see a far bigger picture of who he/she is than even his most long-lasting companions have ever gotten. Probably even more than Susan's grandmother or whichever parent was The Doctor's child, too.
It's probably why they love River so deeply... and despises the reasons for why she knows them so well and believes that romantic love should be beneath them.

Personal head canon is the holographic display you see on fourteens screwdriver is what eleven and twelve see on their respective screwdrivers, in the eleventh doctor’s case it was a psychic interface, only he or the user could see it. It just so happened to active when he flicked it.
The sonic shades are the same thing just this time inside a pair of specs.
All fourteen did was make it an actual display he could interact with whereas eleven seemed to only view it and twelve had to have the shades on in some capacity to use it.

Sonic shades were great, it would allow the sonic to be able to actually give the doctor more info.
The downside though is that the writers got lazy with it and had it be the McGuffin to make the episode finish the way it did.
As for Ncuti in adventure in space and time, the could have done a little bit more color grading him to match the grading on the background he's on, his outfit and skin tone all seem brighter, like they didn't dial in the chroma key settings right.

I get that romance sells - but I really appreciated the more Ace-seeming Doctor. It put curiosity and kindness first and made any affection for others feel more wholesome and genuine - no ulterior romantic motivations. It prevented skeevy age-gaps and awkward power imbalances. I'd much rather watch a lonely Doctor who brings someone along in his Time machine for friendship, to share the wonders of the cosmos and be inspired to grow. Not an old, lonely time traveler scoping out cute girls to potentially romance, using his position of experience and intellect and power to shape them into love-struck tag-alongs

  • @saenz7947

I absolutely loved the sonic shades. At first I didn't because I was afraid that the Doctor wouldn't have a sonic screwdriver for a while, but the glasses lasted only one season plus the Monks arc in the 10th season which I think was a brilliant way to utilise the shades when the Doctor got blind.
I still don't like the sonic remote of the 15th Doctor though, and no it's in no way a screwdriver. But I really hope that over time it might make more sense, maybe they will address all those 4th wall breakings and they might go all in on the ''the Doctor is in a TV show'' sort of plot/theory with Mrs. Flood being some sort of narrator god or something. After so many of these 4th wall breaks and the sonic being so fucking weird and so much like a TV remote I really wish it all tied in to this plot somehow.

Let's agree to disagree about the 11th Doctor's title sequences. I thought they were fine.
    10. Agree I'm glad they've kept it consistent since 2005 but it does seem to be getting more explosive each time which I would like an explanation for, the best one I have seen is that somehow the Time-Lords managed to weaponise regeneration during the Last Great Time War, so when a Time-Lord soldier is killed and regenerate they take out as many Daleks as they can as well.
    9. I'm unsure of what you are trying to say with this point, but, I must say Sonic Shades hell no! The Sonic Spoon 15 has while not as bad still NO!
    8. Agree.
    7. Agree in part. I still think they can make good looking TV and have more episodes per season. 9 is too short and while it's not the shortest (looking at you Flux) it's still not enough. 14 while I still feel is a little short was good for 2005 and it's what we really should be trying to go back to IMO.
    6. Agree.
    5. Agree.
    4. I agree but I would also add, that think this is good but you think CGI/AI for dead actors is bad? What's the difference? Aren't you disrespecting the people who worked on the old show who did the best they could with a budget that would buy you roughly a parking space and 2 whoppers? I just feel if you condone for Classic Doctor Who then you have to concede that it is fine for NuWho.
    3. I have the Matt Smith version on DVD so that's the one I always will watch. It is actually a good idea to do it every milestone celebration, to re-air it with who ever is taking over as the Doctor. I think the scene is extra powerful because it is Billy Hartnell looking over at not only the first LGBTQ+ person to play the Doctor but the first black man to play the Doctor also.
    2. I agree, the problem with 13 is that bar the odd episode here and there it was extremely poorly written. But I was excited to see what they would do with a female Doctor when they announced Jodie initially and looking back at her run, I can still watch they episodes but they are really the worst IMO, even more poorly written than some of the worst classic serials.
    1. The Time War was definitely the best idea.

Sorry, WhoCulture lady, but Delgado will always be the best Master, hands down. His only downside is he was so well paired with Pertwee, that I doubt he would've worked well for any other Doctor had he not had that unfortunate car accident and had decided to continue on being the Master after Pertwee would've eventually left.

On the point of "the Doctor is no longer asexual", I humbly disagree as an asexual myself. Asexuality is a spectrum at the end of the day. Just because they're not aromantic or romantically repulsed, does not mean they're not asexual. First off, sexual attraction and romantic attraction are two separate things. There are people like me that love the idea of a relationship, but find the idea of sex to be undesirable. Then there's some asexuals that do enjoy sex under specific circumstances. It's like, yeah you may not necessarily be craving pizza, but you won't necessarily say no to it either. Sometimes it's like that. I still think the Doctor could fall anywhere within that spectrum seeing as asexual just means "a disinterest in sex that ranges from repulsion to indifference to only under specific circumstances (such as needing to be close to someone before having that desire)"

For the next doctor I would really like it if it was Tom Ellis. I have been watching lucifer Season 6 episode 1 and he is very doctor in that episode and it was great. He also sings so they might be able to do something with that. I think he would be good as a slightly darker doctor similar but not a carbon copy of 12. He played the doctor Martha travelled with in the Season 2 finally and believe the characters were engaged to each other afterwards before her and Mickey got together. It would be cool if they brought Martha back and the doctor has her previous fiancé face

"River, the best character". Interesting, I hadn't considered who "the best character" in Doctor Who was… Let me think.
Well first off I'm going to exclude Doctor's (sorry Jon), and companions, (sorry Elisabeth) as they'd deserve their own category, I think. So that narrows it down to… (in addition to River,) The Brigadier, his daughter, Benton, the Master (or Mistress,) Petronella, K9, Captain Jack, Davros, (*best character doesn't have to be a good-person,) Wilfred (aka Tom Campbell), Sally, Harriet… (honorable mention, Astrid). Wow. And those are just the ones I could remember.
Hmm, well first let me say it's an opinion so any of these, or ones I forgot (sorry) aren't wrong. That said, for me I'd have to say Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney).
As always thank you so very much all, for the videos.

The trouble with those is how very badly they date. Poor Leela the Savage is dreadfully dated from the costume, attitude and what was known about the era she came from. Future is even harder, only a few decades ago we couldn't have predicted everyone would be walking around with miniature computers and mobile phones. That instead of talking to each other and hanging out chatting say as background characters in a street, people would be sitting in groups ignoring each other using hand held devices 😮 Aliens, look at the old costumes how cringeworthy they look in classic who. New Who Slitheen are fun but already dated. CGI rather than costumes date worse, you can see the CGI in the 60th and Ruby Road and it's a bit jarring and that's with super money to do it. After all that, I do agree with you, it'd be great but that ages so badly it can wreck things quickly.

For example, #5: Romance is introduced into the show, but do we need it and how is it justified?
Even in #8, the deeper development of companions, I agree, but you didn't show any justification for it. Also, it isn't really true for the "fam" - they're such underdeveloped companions they drop bottom for most of the classic companions.

Still don't agree with the concept of giving the Doctor a love life. The Doctor really needs to be above all earthly concerns. He is NOT human, and we should not ascribe our human emotions onto them. Yes, the Doctor can have relationships with humans - that was established as far back as the First Doctor and Cameca in The Aztecs. But I still say it shouldn't go beyond that. Even if the Doctor's relationship with River Song was one of the series more touching love stories.
And the sonic screwdriver. That so became a deus ex machina way too quickly. Can't do something? Pull out the old sonic! It couldn't do before what we want it to do now? Whatever - it does it now, don't ask questions. Even the writers during the Fifth Doctor's era realized it was being used too much to get out of a jam so they had the villain of the week destroy it. But like Superman's kryptonite, it was way too easy to bring it back the next time they needed it. Well, it's still better than pulling a gun for whatever reason.
Did anyone ever realize that the Doctor used the screwdriver for its real-life function of turning a screw only ONCE? Yeah, it somehow had the ability to telekinetically do so, but we'll take it.

A couple are definitely worthwhile but most I'd happily do without. (For example both the Sonic Screwdriver and the Psychic paper are lazy get-out-of-jail-free macguffins.) I do like the consistent regeneration style which of course has now been shot down in flames by the last two regenerations. I can sort of get on board with the bigeneration thing though I think it was largely unnecessary nonsense but I'd love to hear an explanation of how Jodie's clothes managed to regenerate.

I did say "many" not "all" - I am sure that there are as many different opinions as there are fans. I enjoy the modern version as much as I enjoyed it right from the Hartnell days but things like the sonic screwdriver and the psychic paper are used - in my opinion only, yours may differ - far too often. It's true that the original series often had too much padding because of its serialised format but its also true that the modern series is often rushed to the point that things like the clothes regenerating are just done with no explanation at all and not even hand-waved away in the dialogue.

Each to their own, but I was just amazed at how many of these didn't "get" original Who. The old idea that Ace - a "teenager" who swears, which means she calls people "bog brain" - was the first "real" companion is kind of amazing, really. Lots of the 70s companions WERE ciphers, but they had to be because the STORIES took precedence. In New Who you've got Daleks murdering people in London while the Doctor and Rose make gooey eyes, because the "emotional" (read: syruppy, overwritten nonsense with OTT "emotional" music) has to take priority. Having an obsessive identikit regeneration effect takes away any originality from the process. This video appears to me rather as a brainstorming of bullet-points without diving into them. None of those changes are argued upon and therefore I can't accept it as a "justification" by any means.
Yes, there's been some bad or padded writing in classic Doctor Who and some female companions feel like crybabies. But they only take the negatives in this regard. Sarah Jane and Liz would eat some of the modern companions for breakfast, especially Yaz and the rest rest of 13th's "fam".
_Lots of the 70s companions WERE ciphers, but they had to be because the STORIES took precedence._
Well, we knew Liz was a scientist and she supported 3rd in his investigations. Sarah Jane was an investigative Journalist and we've seen her spirit in many stories, both with the third and fourth doctor. They weren't cyphers, their characters were introduced right ahead and harmonically weaved into the stories.
Whilst in Martha, we meet her as a Student of medicine, a scientist in some regard, but when does this background of hers ever appear in a story? I only can think of _The Shakespeare Code,_ wherein she shortly checks this one guy about the cause of death.
Even much, much worth, with Ryan - Do I need to elaborate?
With Rose and the 9th Doctor it's another cup of tea, I liked how her background, friend and family, was integrated into the stories. That's never done before in Classics and was a new aspect of story telling.
