  • Is your horse short-strided in front, have stiff, choppy movement, or intermittently “off” in front with no apparent problem in the feet or lower legs? This could be the result of tension or strain in the muscles that attach the forelimbs to the body, and that are responsible for the fore, back and lateral movement of the forelegs.
Restriction in the movement of the scapula, and in the neck-shoulder-withers junction of the horse can be the source of several movement problems in the front end.
In general, releasing tension in this area can result in a better range of motion in the horse's front limbs.
In this video Jim Masterson of the Masterson Method demonstrates a bodywork technique that you can use to help your horse safely release tension that may be contributing to movement issues in the front end. The Masterson Method teaches horse owners a unique, interactive method of equine bodywork for alleviating soreness, strain, and tension in the horse.

HI, I now have a pony who had an horrific accident 12 years ago, and although he came back into work, his work (riding stable) has been intermittent. Due to the injury he is very choppy in the canter with both hind feet almost moving at the same time. However, this morning I worked his bladder meridian - this was amazing as i could not only feel knotted areas, I could feel the muscles move as they relaxed. This was followed by the neck - which will need a lot of work. But what was the most fantastic were his responses to the hind end techniques. All of a sudden he was yawning and chewing. Later when asked to stretch for a carrot, he could stretch down through his neck and body and not have to bend his left foreleg to get the treat. I never bend or stretch him more than he can manage but the way he easily lowered his head was a transformation. This is a process that I am going to follow up especially as he has so much tension in his neck, but thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and allowing us to help our horses.

Do you ever try to release the poll from straight on vs doing it with the lateral bend?
