  • In this video, I give 2 channel shout-outs and do a mailday. I also discuss the circumstances that can lead to common cards being hard to find with a focus on 2 factors. Those being condition and price.

    Love that 1983 Gwynn. I found a really well conditioned raw copy on eBay about 6 months ago. Came back a PSA 8.5 but it's really well centered. Hard to find that in 83! You are totally right!

      @michaelcreeden1560 It's a great card! I'm sure a well centered 8.5 looks really nice. They are so hard to find centered and definitely hard to find nice copies at my local card shows. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      🤣 You're probably right! Kind of what I was trying to get across is that they are much rarer in high grades because of production issues. And it is even rarer to find at a show for a good price.

    Try finding one of my favorite cards "with "eye appeal", The 1971 Topps Richie Allen. Been looking for it centered since 1971. had 25 of them at that time and that was the talk on the street. All of them are O/C. Or the 72 Hank Aaron in action. those 2 cards 1 in 100K centered. Yes, centering has been a "thing" since then.

      Those are great examples of what I 2as trying to explain. Those aren't difficult to find at all but find one centered. Good luck! I appreciate the support, Mike!

      I find it odd how cards can be "rare" and highly sought after for centering, but yet, take a truly rare item like a type 1 photo of that same player and it either can't even be given away or only fetches a fraction of the price. I understand cards have always been most sought after, but the card hobby has never made much sense with people chasing all the artificial scarcity.

    Hi Billy. Ben is an awesome guy with an awesome channel, what a great gift. I certainly will check Joe`s channel out. I have a very narrow list right now, so most of these smaller shows I`ll be attending in the near future, I`ll be attending as a window shopper for the most part. I will be saving up until Strongsville, for a 52 Topps Jackie. I`m sure I`ll pick up some smaller stuff along the way, but I doubt it will be anything very expensive, but you never know. Billy, I am a former collector (early to mid 80s) returning to the hobby. I have really been enjoying your videos along with those from Graig at Mid-Life Sports Cards. Seems we both have a fondness for the Lou Brock rookie card. I have a Lou Brock player run from my first collecting life. This brings me to another point, given your love of the St. Louis Cardinals.
    Lou Brock came to the Cards in 1964, so his first appearance in that uniform is the 1965 Topps. Have you studied this set much? Very few of the color combinations (Pennant and Frame color) in that set actually match the team uniforms. The pennant does of course, but often the frame color makes no sense at all. One that does is the St. Louis Cardinals player cards, with the red pennant and black frame. The Lou Brock and Bob Gibson cards are particularly stunning. Ever considered assembling a collection of the 1965 Topps Cardinals?

    I'm going to weigh in on this subject. Let's take the gwynn or say a Ryan Sandberg RC from 1983.. Anybody that has them, which are alot of us, says I'm not selling that for such a cheap price.. I'm holding on to that, it'll appreciate well.. So even being a plentiful card, folks honors them. That trend will continue also. The bulk of my collection is based on this theory being true.

    • @billyballgamesportscards
      @billyballgamesportscards  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @royakard8536 I hope you are right! Those types of cards make up the bulk of my collection. Do you think that is why they aren't seen often at cards shows? Collectors aren't selling them to dealers for next nothing? Most of the time, when I see these types of cards for sale, they are usually graded 8 or lower.

    • @royakard8536
      @royakard8536 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @billyballgamesportscards why would you give away something you know will cost more? I personally believe cards such as the fine 83 rookies will weather the test of time quite nicely. All I'm saying is , a good hall of fame rookie card in good shape isn't bad to prospect a little with.

      Great topic, Billy! These higher grade 80s rookies are certainly plentiful online, but I agree with you that you won’t see too many of them at shows in person. There could be a few reasons for this phenomenon:
      - The rookies in 9s and 10s tend to be sought after by serious collectors and investors - not the type of crowd who is necessarily looking to move them at shows.
      - For bigger shows like the National, cards like these just don’t bring enough of a return on investment to make it profitable to display in a showcase. A Randy Johnson ‘89 Topps Traded gem mint BGS 9.5 only sells for about $25. Dealers may want to use that case real estate to showcase a more modern flashier / pricier card of a current player.
      At the National, I was struck by how few 90s cards were in showcases, with the exception of about 5-6 tables. Even those tables mostly featured Griffey, Bonds, & Jeter - if you wanted anyone else like Maddux, Gwynn, Pedro, or Piazza, you had to ask, and even then, those guys don’t have the kind of value to make it worthwhile for many of these huge dealers to feature them prominently in their showcases. Unless they were SUPER rare 90s inserts like Gem Masters, Starting 9s, Crusade Reds, or Star Rubies, you only saw inserts of those tippy top Pareto players.
      - There’s very little room for profit on these kinds of cards. Say what you will about estimated card values from sources like Alt / PSA / Market movers / card ladder / etc… but this may be the biggest factor: with SO many of these types of rookie cards transacted on eBay alone EVERY DAY, the value estimates are VERY accurate and not too volatile. When any Joe Schmoe walks by a table and can see the past 4 eBay sales of a PSA 9 Ripken rookie that same week, that dealer will have to price theirs to compete with all the online ones too, so they can’t price it with any significant profit margin built in.

    • @billyballgamesportscards
      @billyballgamesportscards  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @royakard8536 I hope you are right. I hold a lot of stuff like that in my collection. My thoughts are that for those types of plentiful cards to hold value in the future, they are going to have to be high-grade versions of them. 10s already do and are a very low percentage of the pop reports, but I think 9s and even 8s could hold and maybe build value in the future for certain cards. 9s already have to a certain extent. I'm sorry I didn't respond to you earlier.
