- How well do you know your Southern African birds calls? Find out by playing along with my Southern African bird call challenge over the next ten days! Each day I will post a video with 15 bird calls - 5 easy, 5 moderate and 5 difficult. The challenge is to not only see how many you get right in each video, but also what your grand total is out of 150 at the end of the 10 challenges.

I'm German and I was fascinated by birds even as a primary school student. In 2019 I was in Africa for the first time. Johannisburg - Kruger Park - Northern Drakensberg - Johannisburg.
I found the birds singing in Africa incredibly beautiful and impressive. Much more intense than in Europe - or in Central America. These African songs are much louder, rougher, simple than most European birds. In the early morning it was a cacophony, but an intoxicatingly beautiful cacophony.
Just now I was amazed at the singing of the Purple-crested Turaco. Unfortunately, I only saw the species once on the second day of the trip, outside of the Kruger Park. However, the series of calls reproduced here seems very familiar to me. I have probably heard the bird species regularly in the national park.
We have purple-crested turaco in our garden regularly 😊 Durban, SA
I enjoyed this! I got 5/15, although I recognized a few more, but couldn't think of the bird to go with it. Most of all, I loved hearing the sounds of birds I've not seen before and some I've seen but not heard. Thank you for this challenge!

Thanks for a wonderful, educational series. Loved it. Not very familiar with all the different calls, but happy to learn and mostly know them in Afrikaans. Maybe add Afrikaans names too, if possible if you make more videos. Thanks again and looking forward to more challenges 🙂

I have heard almost all of these calls in East Africa. It's hard to find EA bird sounds so I normally search for South African when I want to Identify a local bird sound.

Just finished the series and got 93/150 in total, and 10 for the first one. Loved all of them and hope to see more in the future. Finally bought the Roberts 2 app, so I hope you get a commission! 😆

love it. I will watch them all. I bought bird recordings a few some years ago, the problem is that the recording tells you the name before you hear the sound, so, you can not easily test yourself. I like the way you did it. First the sound and then at the end, the name together with the drawing of each bird. Fantastic.

10/15 - missed out on the difficult calls
13/15. Got G P Snipe and S Red Bishop incorrect (latter’s call sounded different than to what used to). Thanks.
Just 6! It may be the intensity of the call as opposed to what is heard in the field. Ill lower my volume for the next batch.
With the first challenge, I managed only ONE correct! The Ground Hornbill...I've got a lot to learn. 😮😊

Please help - I heard a new bird in my garden this morning; Randpark Ridge, Jhb; Whit Drr or Wheat Drr. There were 2 birds, one calling from a neighbouring garden. Try as I might, I couldn't see it at all.

I got the oxpecker - strange because I live in the middle of Cape Town - I almost got the ground hornbill but I confused its call with another bird.
I'm good with pigeons...

I think a similar video but on just common garden birds will be awesome, specially during this lockdown with so little traffic noise. My score was atrocious.

Whats the bird in the background of the 3rd call? I'm from Canada and have been trying to figure it out.
There are 3 birds calling in the background that I can hear, red-eyed dove, turtle dove and rattling cisticola.

14/15 Was wrong on the Southern Red Bishop thought it was a Yellow-crowned Bishop.
Got 9 - SHOCKING! Called a Fork-tailed drongo a Greater blue-eared Starling
Well done, Pieter! 9/15 is a solid start...there’s a looong way to go to 150 :) I had a feeling that the drongo would be confused with a startling by at least a few people...
