  • After years working in coffee I'm ashamed to admit that my barista brain had never thought of doing this until I did it by accident. The Aeropress actually makes a pretty solid pour over dripper, and in this video I'll not only tell you, but I'll show you why.

    I've been doing this for a while to make the "japanese iced coffee" a lot. I don't have a pour over so decided to try the aeropress and it works wonders. I grind quite a bit finer (think hoffman v60) and use 65ml/100l ratio; and in the water use 30% ice: 70% hot water. I normally make half a liter (so 33g(coffee)/350(water)+150(ice)) and 100g bloom, swirl then pulse 50grams water every 30 seconds, swirl again for even bed and allow drawdown. The brew takes around 7-9 minutes total and IS FANTASTIC!

    Interesting 🤓 i love aeropress but am always struggling with the small amount of coffee it can make each time. What works for me is around 30g coarse coffee, 3 min of dripping without the plunger while constantly topping off the water. Then at 3min i press. Gives me two cups for a long drive or to share with someone else.

    I have been reluctant to buy an AeroPress because I thought it was too 'plasticky' for my taste.
    James Hoffmann's AeroPress mini-series made me reconsider and buy one after all.
    After trying out a couple of different things (James' recipe, messing with grind size a little bit, trying inverted, nothing too crazy) I tried this.
    This could become my new favourite non-espresso brewing method.
    Easier to use and to get good extraction out of than other pour-over methods, a lot less paper waste and wonderful clarity in the cup.
    Will try to finetune my recipe to get just a bit more body and balance, but I really like this method!

    I tried this three times today with three different grind size (ground with Timemore C2) with varying results. Using medium coarse, 23 clicks on C2 (probably eq 29 clicks on Commandante C40) it brewed fast and finished under a minute. The result was a clear but hollow cup of joe.
    The second brew ground with 18 clicks (medium) and it was surprisingly good. It brewed around two minutes.
    The last brew ground with 15 clicks (medium fine) and brewed the slowest, around 4 minutes, and the result was quite bitter.
    By the way, the coffee I selected for the experiment was the cheapest I had, dark-roasted arabica from Papua. Next time I probably try the lighter roast.
    Thanks for the idea, I had thought for trying that before, but only dare after watching your video.
    Btw, what's the water temperature if you don't mind sharing it? I'm curious.

    As a beginner in coffee I found this method really interesting since it removes almost all acidity. It's as if this method is like a neutral speaker, sounding the music with neutral equalization... while a V60 is more like one of those bass-heavy headphones that can really exaggerate the bass (say the acidity in this analogy). In other words, I guess this method provides a more neutral extraction while other methods allow to amplify or mute certain things from the beans.

    A little trick you can do: use the inverted method to allow steeping, and then once inverted, you can either press any excess coffee (cant do that with a pour over) and for clean up, just press out the puck.

    I only brew enough filter for myself, 1 cup, and I find the V60 a bit unsuitable for this small amount so I'm going to try your aeropress method today to see if it makes much of a difference. Isn't experimenting part of the joy of coffee? I think so! EDIT: OK, I tried it using a Columbian Geisha I like but I think I prefer the V60. It tasted a bit muted, lacking the same clarity as the V60. Not bad but not the best. This will be something I will consider next time I travel. I can travel lighter with my V60 now and just my aeropress.

      @@Sprometheus it's been a little bit of a whirlwind. It's the first brewer that I've had to be very particular with, regarding technique. Between that and little available guidance, it took about a month to figure out while trying their fine-grind recipes. But I've only brewed with any seriousness for a year or so.
      I've gotten some great brews out of it, with pretty expected flavors. Depending on the starting water temperature, the same bean's acidity changed from lemon to grapefruit, for example.
      The filters are expensive, and getting a good seal with them is an annoying process, but they never clog, allowing for very fine grinds to be used. So there may be some justification to paying for them.
      And, most importantly, it seems to accentuate nearly everything I do, good or bad. That includes grind distribution, bloom technique (with or without the showerhead, how aggressively I swirl while blooming, etc.). But, when it's done right, I've been delicious cups with quite strong acidity.

    How I do my aeropress, if anyone ever care to try:
    - Two blank lungos and a blank espresso on a nespresso machine (as it's my only source of hot water in my job - about 260ml of water) and a full hopper of a JX worth of beans ground on the finer side of pour-over.
    - Pour some water and stir to get all the grounds wet and make a coffee slurry.
    - Add water 'till it's almost spilling and let some of it draw down as it won't all fit in an Aeropress Go.
    - Keep adding the remaining water untill it's all in and you have enough room (3mm or so) to add the plunger.
    - Add the plunger and let it steep for 3-4min.
    - Press.
    - Stir the resulting liquid.
    - Enjoy.
    It's worked for me. (Much!) better than the Nespresso option, and more plentiful. Plus it gives me just enough of a "coffee street cred" in the office that I'm the one people ask for coffee-related advice.

  • @MattHarris85

    I think one of the interesting things about the Aero is how far it's penetrated into normie/non-coffee enthusiast circles, which means lots of variation in brew methods. I definitely know a couple of people who do essentially this method, then add the plunger and press once the all the water has drained. I guess they think they're squeezing the last extra bit of coffee out of the bed. They're just doing this because they think that's how you're supposed to make an Aeropress

    This kinda reminds me of how the creator of the Aeropress recommends a soft, slow press. Does pressing harder increase extraction?

    • @Sprometheus

    • @sebaba001
      @sebaba001 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've pressed hard for a while now back to pressing soft. I've noticed hard presses agitate the very fine fines and create bitterness. I think it's better to either grind finer or steep longer. Also pouring water abruptly I find also creates bitterness.

    • @sebaba001
      @sebaba001 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Sprometheus if you do make that video I'd recommend doing one hard press normal and then a hard press with coffee that has had the very fine fines sifted with the kruve sifter. I'm willing to bet that'd be the winner. 🥇🥇

    I'm intrigued if anyone has tried the method of dividing the brew into 5 blocks, like you would for a V60. I can't help thinking this is the true way to get coffee for two out of an aeropress. 30g coffee, 5x 100g water.

  • @setemic

    So the only different features to this method the tricolate brewer offers are a wider brewing cylinder and a melo drip on top of it as I see. Would you say they’d make any significant difference in brewing?

    • @Sprometheus
      @Sprometheus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So I can’t say having not used the Tricolate. But the price tag was a big turn off to me. I felt like I could produce something similar with what I had on hand.
      I do have a Melodrip, and considered using it for this video but felt like it made it less broadly appealing and useable. But I think using it could make a difference and would allow for some possible extra control and extraction.

    • @setemic
      @setemic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. Yes I do agree that it is a bit overpriced considering what it offers could easily be replicated by the already popular aeropress. I’m still not sure if the direction of a higher extraction would be for me as of now still deciding to get one.

    • @Sprometheus
      @Sprometheus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@setemic my thoughts on extraction are a little bit mixed. Of course I like chasing the dragon, but I feel like weighing the cost benefit with some tools don’t hit me right. That said, I’ll eventually get a Tricolate because I have the backing of the folks on my Patreon so it doesn’t come out of pocket. I don’t want to say too much on either side between this method and the Tricolate and end up eating my words. Haha.

    I started doing this for flights and backpacking, so I wouldn't have to bring the plunger as extra weight / space in my pack. I use a permanent SS filter. All around best solution I've yet to try for optimal brewing on the go!
    PRO TIP: you can press the palm of your hand firmly on the top of the chamber to cause a buildup of pressure that simulates the use of the plunger - works surprisingly well (if your hand can handle the heat!)
