Find a different location if need be because this is just bad and totally preventable with a longer runway without the wall.
The birdstrike could damage an engine, but is not cause for the crash. Not even the landing gear issue is the cause of the crash. From video it appears the plane came in too fast, "landed" way to far inside the 3km runway leading to overshooting the runway. This is the core issue. Unfortunately the Koreans decided to have built a concrete reinforced structure just 150 after end of the runway resulting in instant destruction of the plane.
Also something i want to say even if it did hit a flock of birds and the wiring broke there is a manual gear extension switch in the cockpit so it doesnt make any sense
Memo to Times Radio: If neither of your "reporters" knows the slightest thing about aviation or aircraft design, maybe you should take a pass on speculating on the cause of an aviation disaster. Just sayin'.
A bird strike alone cant bring down a plane like that even if both engines are dead like in the Hudson River incident they should have still been able to lower the landing gear and brake, they also have the APU (auxiliery power unit) they could have started up to provide hydraulic pressure as far as i know, but nobody said that the birdstrike alone brought down the plane... they just said there also was a bird strike...
@@Kabivelrat Had both engines failed with the APU not running then the RAT would have automatically deployed. Let’s wait and see what the investigation reveals, shall we?
Something really odd about it, having been an airport employee I have seen aircraft come in on full scale emergency with no hydraulics or engine out and that just didn't look right
@ArthurTanner-d7s that ideally when you build your airport there shouldn't be a brick wall at the end of it. If there is a flooded marsh at the end of the runway it may help to avoid or lessen disasters like this.
Because the idea isnt for planes to skid past the runway? Lets say they made the runway 200m longer and then put a wall there... you would say the same thing... the runway was already 3000m long.
The other in russia was clearly hit with Anti air so wasnt the same as this. Accidents are incredibly rare when it comes to commercial flights you have a way higher chance of dying when you are driving in a car.
The plane was cleared to land 1L. So why did the plane land on 19R? If you look at a map of the airport the is no concrete wall at the end of runway 1L.
If you look at a bird’s eye view of the south korean airport it’s fairly understandable why the wall is/was there, i was fortunate to have landed at that airport and lived in south korea for 4 years in Ulsan
Sorry but the pilot was an idiot - landing gear isn’t down so that means not enough friction to brake. So without the landing gear when he knows that the plane will be in bits he still chose tarmac against RC walk rather than the field right next to it that would endure more friction and non wall.
Landing on the runway is safer than a field. On a soft surface there is a possibility of it digging in and flipping over. It is also easier for the emergency services to get to the aircraft after landing.
@@90skidnomo Yes, especially when the gear is not extended. The underslung engines will be the first to make contact, dig into the soft ground and probably rupture the wing tanks resulting in a fire. That is why we are taught, for good reason, to make a gear-up landing on the runway.

It is entirely unknown if a Boeing production or quality issue was a contributing factor to the crash. The accident Boeing 737-800 airframe was originally operated by Ryanair for 7 years, with seemingly no issues.
Boeing 737-800 (not a max btw) it was sunny... the birds strike thing is also BS clearly. The pilot forgot to put doqn his gear. Hitting birds wouldnt effect the landing gear and on a plane that size... those engines are able to take multiple bird strikes and keep going. Also that aircraft can fly and land on one engine. Weather looks fine in the video. The pilot forgot to extend his landing gear. Thats what I see
Collision with birds will not cause both landing gears not to be deployed
Technically there are three landing gear. Left main, right main and the nose gear.
Wait for the FDR and VR results before you speculate.
I've never designed a real airport but if I did I don't think I would put a brick or concrete wall at the end of the runway.
I guess, wild animals, security or houses

Double Dutch what you've written. Coming in too fast doesn't cause the failed deployment of the undercarriage! Either pilot error or malfunction.
@shaggypyro Nowhere does he write that speed prevented gear deployment. I suggest you re-read his comment slowly.
Also something i want to say even if it did hit a flock of birds and the wiring broke there is a manual gear extension switch in the cockpit so it doesnt make any sense
That brick wall it hit is what made it worse, why that wall was even there is beyond me
Reinforced concrete. Yeah, massively overbuilt for the antennas on it and the foundation should be level with the ground anyway.
Either way, as can be seen, it was the end of the runway, with further fencing ahead.
Unbelievable isn't it
Yes, a concrete brick wall was further away but nothing as substantial as that reinforced concrete base for the antennas. Strange design.
As others have mentioned, the aircraft hit the grass berm that the localiser antenna was situated on, NOT the airport perimeter wall.

Can someone explain how a bird strike could have brought down this plane?
It didn’t. Let’s wait for the report rather than guess what happened.
