- The President of India has revealed that Droupadi Murmu is not her original name. She made the disclosure in an interview with an Odia magazine. Murmu said her first name 'Droupadi' based on the Mahabharat character is not her original name and was given to her by her school teacher. The President then went on to say that her real name is 'Puti'. Watch this video to know more.

I actually thought it's unusual for a woman to have Draupadi as her name. I doubt the intention of the teacher who gave her that name. But Draupadi was a very strong character in Mahabharata. her strong willpower and persona was amazing.
Edit: okay so thank you to the people who explained it to me that in that region from where she belongs to, Draupadi name is common and even duryodhana, Nakul etc and there was no bad intention. In my region, it's not common so I misunderstood. Draupadi is a beautiful name.

Actually that's very common in villages. Lots of them would have a home name and when someone enrol them in school, they just keep some random name and even date of birth. My Dad was enrolled to school by his Uncle(Mama) and while enrollment he was given name and dob by his local school teacher. Still no one knew his registered name in his village. Everyone just use to call him by his pet name.
Yup. I agree. It is quite common .. I was born and brought up in Patna. There also, many of us had a nickname which was given to us when we were born. But when it was time to create birth certificate or to take admission in Nursery/kindergarten, our teacher used to tell our parents to tell the official name of the child (as in birth certificate). If one didn't had a certificate, then teacher used to suggest a new name (with the consent of parent ofc). And then use that name to make the birth certificate)...
For example, my original name (still my nickname that my family members and neighbours use) is kittu. But my name in birth certificate is Reya. My official name is Reya (as in voter id, aadhar, PAN ,etc).

I was just trying to recite my part of the story about where my dad's teacher named him. As far as Tribal culture goes, it is not the same everywhere. Every tribe is different and its culture. Draupadi was the brahminised/Hinduised named given to her. Most probably her teacher and school didn't like Tribal cultural signs and lifestyles that much, and who knows, it might be a Sangh school. It's a very common phenomena.

The naming process is common in tribal communities in Jharkhand Chattisgarh and Odisha but it gets problematic when tribals get government jobs because for males its easy they carry their father's surname but for Females sometimes they can't take their husband's surname...
That doesn't happen here in Meghalaya where Matriliny is the norm. All three tribal groups of Meghalaya follows the Matrilineal system where the children gives the mother's name. And married women have the freedom to keep their surname. So it's not really a problem

Puti in Bengali means small. I think it means something similar in Orissa & Bihar. Many parents specially in villages don't double name their children, that is having a pet name (Dak name) & a legal name (for document & certifications). My parents & relatives gave 1 legal name (used in official documents) & 2 pet names (one each from the paternal & maternal relatives). In case the child doesn't have a birth certificate (which could have been the case when Madam President was born) while enrolling in primary school the teachers keep the birth year the same but put in date & month that will allow the child to be enrolled in school at that session & sometimes if they have only one name & that can be considered as a Dak name (like puti or chotu for example) then might give them another name. But this is not always the case, while doing B.Ed, I had a classmate (this man was already a teacher in a government school) who had the legal name "Babu-sona", it's a very common pet name which parents/grandparents call a child or even a girlfriend can call their boyfriend that, in english it would mean something like "Darling". Think how awkward it must be for his students to call him Basu-sona sir, somebody his parents/teachers/himself should have changed his legal name before his first board exam. Anyways I don't think the teacher had any bad intentions.

Generally in ancient times KULA GURU gives the name of children. fortunately he got her name from Guru. and see how it works. we usually keep a nick name her nick name is puti and after admition at school we keep a school name. her school name is Droupati Murmu. In our Odia book there was a story of a teacher and his student. And it was based on a true story. There, the teacher too changed the girl's name. It was Lakshmi before, he renamed her Subhada. According to him, he said that this girl is not only Lakshmi for her parents but she's Saraswati too. So he named her Subhada. It was described beautifully though. I wish I had that book. I gave it to someone else. So basically that time, teachers used to give names to their students. It's ain't bad rather it shows affection of love of a teacher towards it's student.
