I'm pretty sure spoiler crimes could be an entire video! I also detest those "baked in" stickers on book covers. I have enjoyed your weaponization of Melinda's video. Thanks for expanding this into a tag!
That was fun to watch. The sad thing is there are people who go to free libraries and take books to sell on line they don’t even bother replacing any they took.
Yes, people were really upset about the woman taking all the books from the Little Free Libraries here. They called the cops, who could do nothing, but people posted pictures of her and her car online. Hopefully, she stopped after that. Thanks for watching and commenting! 💛
Deckled edges are the most annoying thing ever. I've had a paper cut off deckled edges and. most of the time you can't jkust turn over a single page, but get a pair of pages each time. Grrrrr!
I'm incredibly annoyed by movie tie-in covers! I read somewhere that the publishing houses do it because it really does increase sales, though I don't understand how or why.
Love this tag! On a subject related to stickers for prizes: one thing that irritates me is when a book cover says “winner of the >insert literary prize
Ooohhh! That is a great one! It is totally deceptive to make a reader think the book won a prize when a different book by the same author got the prize. Totally annoying. And whew. I was starting to think I was the only one who liked deckled edges! 💛
Yes, I too am seriously annoyed by the Oprah, Reese, GMA, etc. circles that are integrated into the cover designs. Usually, I resell those to my used bookstore, but if it’s a book I intend to keep, I cover those circles with pretty stickers of my own. I know this sounds crazy, but there are lovely gold seals produced for letter writing and also people on Etsy that make stickers specifically for this purpose. The only thing that matters is that the sticker be acid free so that it won’t harm the book and you could remove it if you want to. I feel like an author has worked so hard to produce a work of art, why should someone else’s name be in it? Also annoying is when the publisher puts a big blurb on the front which eclipses the title, especially if the blurb is from another author that I’m not keen on. To me that’s even worse.
A blurb from an author you don’t like is definitely a red flag. And you are right - covering one sticker with another -even if it’s not technically a sticker - is crazy, but in a good way! 😂 So nice to hear from you! 💛
Thanks for tagging me. the .5 in a series I find is common with Brandon Sanderson when he adds a Novella to one of his established series... like Edgedancer (The Stormlight Archive, #2.5). It doesn't bother me too much as I rarely follow series. At library school we used to joke about arranging books chromatically...now it is an aesthetic choice! Great answers.
I can’t handle it! I don’t know if it’s just a bonus novella and I can skip it without missing anything or if I MUST read it. I look forward to your version! 💛
Kelly! The stupid label as part of the cover drives me nuts too! Ugh 😠. It’s like wearing your clothes with the size and care labels hanging out. Some people might be proud of their labels, but I, for one, keep mine hidden or remove them all together. 🤭 Great video as always!
This tag has taken off like wildfire in the past week. Well done. I admit that a change in format has annoyed me - when Hard Case Crime books went from mass market paperback (seven inch) size to trade paperback (eight inch) size. For reissues of mid-20th century crime books, mass market paperback size really was the ideal. One could easily imagine them on a spinner rack in a drug store in 1965.
Thank you! I don’t know about wildfire, but I have not had good luck with original tags in the past, so I’ll take it. I don’t think publishers consider that some people are collecting books and changing the size is terrible. I think it’s also about greed, sadly. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! 💛
I stopped reading introductions to books because so many have spoilers! I save them for after I've finished the book. It's like these people assume everyone has already read it and know what happens. Even more obnoxious when the story itself gives away pivotal plot developments and the ending multiple times, like The Book Thief, which I just did a scathing video about.
Yes, I think since I have known you, I have known how much you hated that book. 😃 But yes, editors seem to think if a book is a classic we all know what happens! Ugh. Happy reading! 💛
Oh so many things... When you buy from Amazon and the set is mismatched or the book was obviously damaged before it was shipped. When publishers let bookclubs buy advertising space on the covers of books like Oprah, Reese, Jenna, etc. When publishers change a consistent design like Penguin did. When an eBay seller says nothing about the book being a former library book, or that it is moldy, or damaged. And when publishers change the name of an older book and republish it. The deceit in publishing and online buying is legion.
Hello! Thanks so much for sharing that. You brought up some excellent points - Amazon purchases lately have been extremely poorly packaged. And changing the name of a book is BEYOND annoying!
This annoyance is probably specific to me. I have been trying to use my library more to be fiscally responsible. My annoyance is incomplete series at my library. The local library had books 3 and 4 of a series I was keen to read but not books 1 and 2. Why would I read those before I knew what happened before? Another 6 book series that I was really enjoying had the first 4 but I had to buy the last 2 to complete the series.
So annoyed with you! I can’t get the last two (or three since one book has a .5 after it) books in a series. I don’t want to buy them all, but how am I supposed to finish the series? You are not alone, friend. 💛
I am with you about the color coded shelves. They are lovely and they don't annoy me, but I am mystified as to how they "work" as personal libraries. Thanks for weaponizing! I love it!

Hi Kelly, nice tag! The one thing that bothers me a lot is being spoiled by the introduction or the blurb on the back or any other place on the book or in the book. I’ve got to the point where I don’t read any introductions or even the back of the book before I read it. What are the publishes thinking? Aloha friend.
Great tag. I completely agree regarding "organizing" by color and stickers. I think the .5s come from books being published and written out of chronology sometimes. Like there are a couple of Earthsea stories that are set before "A Wizard of Earthsea" but that LeGuin wrote later. Just a thought.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. In a weird twist of fate, I was reading a Le Guin short story last night that had to do with the Earthsea trilogy! How strange is that? 💛
You got me with this one! One of the most annoying things that I have ever encountered was in a library book. This book was a large-scale (coffee-table sized) beautiful annotated edition of a classic that had cat hairs on nearly every page! Apparently the previous reader let their cat (or cats) walk over the book while they were reading. Since I am not a cat person, it was rather disgusting. I know it's a library book, and I don't expect the book to be in excellent condition (other people's annotations, sticky pages, folded corners, etc.), but I do have my limits! The other thing that annoys me is spoilers in the endnotes! I've learned not to read the Intro or the back cover, but I think that I should be able to read the endnotes (like meanings of archaic words, references to historical facts, etc.) without spoilers. This has happened with several Penguin Classic editions I have. Probably it is the fault of the specific editor for that book, but the publisher should scan the notes and remove the spoilers before it goes to print IMHO.
We touched some nerves here! Even as a cat person, I would find that annoying! And I just had a spoiler in the endnotes of a Penguin classic. The endnotes should be safe! I completely agree! Thanks so much for sharing! 💛😻💛
The Penguin Classics I havewith spoilers in the notes is A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens. Apparently the editor thought all readers must know the story and clearly referenced things that were *going* to happen later in the plot. I was re-reading from 20 years ago and although I kind of remembered some things, those notes ruined my re-read.
Good video for a distraction from life stuff. Thanks for indulging me and giving me a space to join in as I am just a subscriber and not a booktuber. I answered only the ones I was truly passionate about. 2. Yes. Spoilers a no go. I try not to read the inside flaps or back of the novel. 3. not a LFL but prices of some used book stores seem high, and a popular online store has sent me books listed as very good condition and sent two quite visibly damaged books!. They were not interested in seeing how bad the books were and to maybe train their staff to toss certain books. 6.Again, online bookstores that do not mention the previous owners annotations or writing in the book. I do not like to find library books with writing for food stains in the book. This is one of the main reasons I like to buy my own books. 7.When they change the size/format/design of the books within the same series. 9. I will notice how books are shelved or not shelved. I try to shelve my books in a way that will keep them safe and in good condition. ex out of direct light, upright and not stacked to protect the spine. I personally like hardbacks and softcovers separate but it is not a necessity. 10. I find it annoying when I start a book and then get distracted by another book and am so easily drawn to the new book. Sounds like a me problem LOL. And yes, the nonsticker sticker on the front of the book. I tried finding a copy of Tom Lake without Reese's Book Club and it was not possible. UGH!!! Take good care and and hug the ones you love every chance you get. ❤
Marcia, just because you don’t have a channel doesn’t mean you aren’t a Booktuber! At least not to me. I loved and appreciated your answers to the questions. I think celebrity book clubs should not be allowed to have a sticker! Isn’t it enough that a celebrity is promoting and talking about a book?!?! Happy reading! 💛
Hi Kelly! I enjoyed your tag you had me laughing a lot resonates😂 and the book club branding also drives me crazy! I've been watching a lot of these tags and definitely will be sharing mine. Thank you for brightening the day! ~ 📚 🫖 Michelle
I personally do not like deckled edges. It makes it to hard for me to flip to specific pages. I don't mind reading a book with someone else's annotations, but it really annoys me when someone has underlined a section so poorly that they strike through the actual line of text. Then I have trouble even reading it!
Amanda, yes I’m opposed to any underlining, but poor underlining! That’s very annoying. A very good addition to our list. As for deckled edges, I would have bet money most people were fine with them, and I would have lost that money! Thanks for sharing with us! 💛
Great tag! I hate deckled edges. They look good but flipping through the book is a pain. My annoyance are the similar and wildly overused cover designs. I noticed several years ago that there are a ton of covers with one or more women walking or standing, but we always see them from behind. It was so common and, therefore, unoriginal that I decided I would not choose those books to read even if they sounded interesting.
Love the tag (and your smile!) About the spoilers: I prefer not having them, of course, but I do believe that a spoiler can't ruin a book if it's a great book :D Whenever I end up getting a spoiler, I remind myself of this haha.
Hello! I agree with you somewhat. I had a classic spoiled for me, and while I still really enjoyed this book, the twist or spoiler moved my husband to tears! So what could have been an AMAZING reading experience became something less. Thank you so much for sharing! 💛
I actually prefer annotations for non-fiction but 100% no for fictions 😊. Also, couldn’t agree with you more on publishers stating “a twist” on the back cover - it just tells me that all my predictions are wrong and that the impossible is more likely to be correct 😅
Hello! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! Why can’t people let us discover the twist on our own? Wouldn’t that be so much better? Instead I have to go into every book blind! 💛
I love deckled edges too! People say they can't turn the pages fast. Soooo??? 😂😅 there's no race. 😅 Yes! Character decisions make me scream but if I'm buddy reading then we scream at each other and laugh abt it
😂😂😂 Now we all have a new reason to buddy read, so we judge decisions made by fictional characters!!! I had no idea there was so much hate for deckled edges. Glad you love them as well! 💛
Deckled edges to me just says cheapness. Ever notice how the deckled edges always seems to go with poor paper quality? The publisher is cutting every cost they can because they don’t have enough confidence in the book to believe it will make money.
Kathy, other people feel the same! I think they are lovely, BUT lots and lots of people out there hate them. One person compared them to trash! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! 💛
Hello Pete! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I am reading one of those kinds of books right now. My philosophy is eat the meat and spit out the phone. Mostly I read these books for work. 💛
Hello! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I tend to reach for the next page at the top part of the book so it isn’t such an issue for me. But I admit I had NO idea how many people don’t like them! 😂💛
This is a fun tag! I can't wait to see others' responses to the questions. I love watching tag video sand I hope this one takes off! I do hate those books that have the price as part of the actual cover. Deckled edges look really cool, but they do annoy me. I like to flip to the page that I am on from the side of the book and those edges make that difficult. Spoilers annoy me, when they are in the description or on the cover of the actual book. I once read a book where there was an arson near the end of the book. The cover had a picture of a house that was on fire. Mary Barton by E. Gaskell was completely ruined for me by the description on the back. I only TRULY dislike marginalia in 2 instances. The first is when there's SO MUCH of it that it makes the actual text hard to read. The second is when you can tell that this was an assigned book for school and it is the notes made by the junior high school student for the possible test and not their actual thoughts. For example, I sometimes read books in Spanish. The marginalia I find annoying is when someone is just looking up single words in a Spanish/English dictionary and writing the English word in the margin.
Angela, thanks for the warning about Mary Barton. It has not been ruined for me and I haven't read the back of the book. It's so maddening that you can't even read the back of a book without it being spoiled. Surely it wasn't always that way? Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts! Happy reading!
As far as novellas in the middle of short story collections, I’d prefer them at the beginning or end. Still conflicted on deckled edges 🤔 but definitely don’t like reading books with any underlining or annotations from other people as it takes me out of the book even if I’m trying to ignore them !😉
We bought a used book of poetry last year and it wasn’t tell we were home that we realized someone had highlighted an ENTIRE poem. Jason said they were missing the point of poetry! 💛
I think the only book stickers that irritate me is TARGET BOOKCLUB 30% OFF. so tacky lol. the other ones kind of bother me....but then I think they can be cute like a sign of the times. one day the kids won't know who Oprah is and we will be unable to explain the chokehold she had on America lol
I also hate casual twist spoiling since it completely removes the joy of being shocked! I like deckled edges when I feel like they fit the character of the book that they are on. I have a copy of The Complete Short Stories of Kafka and The Road by Cormac McCarthy with them and the deckled edges feel perfect for those books, but they seem strange on Pride and Prejudice. My edge of choice is dyed or dye splattered edges I cannot agree more on the book club branding on covers! Did Oprah pay for this print run or something? It’s annoying but I understand tie in covers having it, but unless it’s an award please just use regular stickers. I didn’t buy it from, nor am I in their club! I hate annotated books as well mostly because I prefer not to think about what anyone else was thinking about until I am finished reading and choose to enter the discussion! I do however love finding ephemera in used books and loved hearing it called that! I hadn’t heard the word in a while and so it tickled my brain a bit! I totally agree with your series examples. It would drive me bonkers if only one book in a series had a different cover design ethos and size! My addition is those book covers/jackets with a finish on them that makes the books feel like “soft” silicone. It makes my skin crawl while trying to hold them and I have to find a different copy of the book. It may be just me but I can’t stand the sensation!!! Loved this video!
OMG! God's nightgown Kelly the book order/numbering 2.5, 5.5, 6.5 trend is sooo annoying. By the way Slow Horses series which I know we both read have 4 novellas in they series, 2 of which aren't available to me here in OZ, I ain't got time for that! The other annoyances I can ignore or deal with. Ereaders handle well, apart from the poor decisions characters make. Like me choosing not to DNF. Okay, slow, deep breaths now...all good.
But we know they are novellas and frankly, I am just not going to worry about the Slow Horses ones. Are we really going to miss something crucial to the whole series? I am not even if half-way through the books! Deep breaths. Be well, my friend. 💛
@booksimnotreading but what if? My main issue is 4 novellas when the last book has been written and released into the wild I've read 2 and 3 what happened in 2.5??? Not a happy camper 😤 They want to charge full price for a short story or couple of chapters, the nerve. Someone needs to be sent to slough house, STAT 😂
Good! Thank you for watching and commenting! Some folks have taken it a little more seriously than I intended it to be, but it was meant to be good fun! So nice to hear from you! 💛
You made me laugh in agreement with you on many things! I dislike blurbs on front covers. Gushing praise from writer friends, just annoying. Fine, so you are part of that gang, oh but I am not impressed. And yes introductions to classics with spoilers. But what annoys me the most is dreadful artwork on covers. On the other hand I love discovering vintage copies of classics with really of the age covers.
I'm pretty sure spoiler crimes could be an entire video! I also detest those "baked in" stickers on book covers. I have enjoyed your weaponization of Melinda's video. Thanks for expanding this into a tag!

@@kathleencraine7335 That book was spoiled for me, but not with end notes. Very sad.
Thank you for making this tag . I am planning to do the tag soon and watching your videos I agree with you and your answers.
@@readingoffmyshelf2088 Thank you for wanting to do it! I appreciate it! 😃💛

Hi Michelle! So lovely to hear from you! I can’t wait to see your version! 💛
This was great, thank you for the tag! I can't wait to record this as I have some thoughts! 😂
I look forward to your thoughts! 💛
Wow! Those images really got under your skin! I’m tired of book titles that start with The Girl who/on/etc. Thanks so much for sharing! 💛
@@booksimnotreading Aww. Yes, it's always better not to know!
Spoilers and stamping books, definitely annoying!
Absolutely! Thanks for watching and commenting! 💛
I love deckled edges too! People say they can't turn the pages fast. Soooo??? 😂😅 there's no race. 😅
Yes!
Hi Kelly! This was a fun tag. Happy weekend 💛
Happy weekend, Charmaine!
Love this tag. Well done.
Thanks Michael! You’re more than welcome to consider yourself tagged if you are up to it! 💛
I hate self-help trends. Like suddenly when all the books are suddenly orange and have the word f*ck or bullshit*t in the title.
Hello Pete! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I am reading one of those kinds of books right now. My philosophy is eat the meat and spit out the phone. Mostly I read these books for work. 💛
I tend not to like deckled-edged books for practical reason. They are hard to flip through pages.
😂😂😂 You are probably right! The 30 percent stickers are very annoying. I’d love to see your version of this. 💛
My edge of choice is dyed or dye splattered edges
I cannot agree more on the book club branding on covers!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you so much for your kind words. And for responding to so many of the questions. I loved your comment! 💛
hate deckled edges. Most annoying, however, are books with fonts so small I can't read them.
Good one! I hate the super tiny font as well! Thanks for commenting! 💛
Not a happy camper 😤
They want to charge full price for a short story or couple of chapters, the nerve. Someone needs to be sent to slough house, STAT 😂
@@nathanfoung2347 😂😂😂
That was a lot of fun 🤩
I am so glad I made you laugh, Cathy! Blurbs from writer friends - so annoying! We all have our ticks, I guess! Thanks so much for watching! 💛
