Reporter: “What inspired you to make a completely unnecessary reboot/remake”
Filmmaker: “Money!”
Most directors don't do it for money
The studio is the one that does for money
@@RayMcElroy50 By “filmmaker” I was referring to anyone involved in films, including studio producers
Well the good thing about Burton's planet of the Apes is that it would, in my opinion, push for the Rise, Dawn, and War for the planet of the Apes.
Let’s be honest, the “Cesar trilogy” is a way better remake-spin off of Planet of the Apes.
I've only seen the first one but I'd love to see the rest. I enjoyed it; of course I've never seen the original or the 2000nds remake.
1st rule of a cinematic universe:
"You do NOT tell everyone you're making a cinematic universe"
Exactly. Plan it one movie at a time. If it works out, then you can start planning several movies at once
You forgot the Disney live-action remakes.
Some of those are really great(Cinderella), some are not bad, but only okay(lion king), and others are just horrible(Kim possible😬)it just depends on which one.
@@AudreyC379 I thought Aladdin was fine. It was enjoyable, and fun, and the girl who played jasmine did great, but the movie was overall forgettable
I'm pretty sure that no one asked for Annie (2014), Fantastic Four (2015), or Ghostbusters (2016).
I wouldn't include Annie on this list. Critics didn't like it, but audiences did, as it ended up making $20 million over its budget domestically, and an additional $50 million overseas.
It's astounding just how well Psycho has aged. The moment Norman Bates appears on screen he becomes the most fascinating character in the movie. If the movie ages well does it really need a remake?
Exactly. Just like many of the 70s to early 90s horror movies don't need remakes. High definition ruins a lot of them. That unclear video tmfrom back then hid surprises and people better. Just like with psychos black and white footage adding to the ambiance.
rise, dawn and war for the planet of the apes is more better than the tim burton's remake
Excellent point! Another example is the Mancharian Candidate Did we really need a remake even if it had Denzel, Meryl and Liev?

WatchMojo missed one more. The original Child's Play (1988) vs Child's Play (2019).
For me, the original one is more spine chilling and terrifying than the 2019 remake.
They also missed The Karate Kid 2010. The 1984 film was a solid movie the 2010 film bombed big time.

The remake Total Recall was an abomination. Just it’s presence made me angry
Films/film series that shouldn’t be rebooted/remade:
- Back to the Future
- The Princess Bride
- The Shawshank Redemption
- Pulp Fiction
- Citizen Kane
- The Godfather
- Casablanca
- The Lord of the Rings
Lord of the rings would make an awesome family animated film series though, kinda like how to train your dragon. Other than that, there’s no good reason to reboot it at all
Hello number one she be shrek and the breakfast club don’t forget about mean girls
I love Carrie (1976) but NO WAY it is "widely regarded as one of the scariest movies of all time". How? It's very barely a horror. It;s 90% a drama that has horror themes in the last 15 minutes, but even then you're on Carrie's side so her revenge is more satisfying than scary.
I am surprised that "Clash of the Titans" didn't make this list. The remake was so pointless!!
Without Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion animation, the remake sucked. Oh, and the fact it was lame on every other front, too. 🙂
Clash of the Titans was made because of 3D craze at that time and the end results turned out to be a mess and not in a good way.
@@ajpat9620 So the remake of Clash of the Titans was certainly a product of its time?
I need someone at WatchMojo to explain why the 2016 Ghostbusters remake was purposefully left off of this list because it's clear that it has been
@@NoahGoddeeris That was bad. They might have just considered that a made for TV movie since it was on Disney+
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is great.
A Nightmare On Elm Street is underrated.
It seems that remakes and reboots of classic horror movies are almost always disastrous. The main reason why I thought 2013 Evil Dead remake and the 2018 Halloween reboot were going to suck even though they didn't.
The 2013 Evil Dead shocked me . I put off watching it for years because I thought for sure it would suck , but it was great. The 2018 Halloween on the other hand was TERRIBLE and I can't wait for that franchise to be killed off.
texas chainsaw massacre remake is also great in the same way Snyder’s Dawn is. Obviously neither are as good as the original but they both bring a unique take and style which you can’t say for most remakes, reboots or requels.
Well, the 1959 Ben-Hur was itself ALSO a remake of a 1925 movie that featured an epic chariot race and sea battle. And there was also a 1908 version before that.
Some of the classic stories that existed before film aren't so much reboots as "a retelling." I don't like reboot-mania either, but things like Shakespeare plays, Charles Dickens stories, Biblical stories, etc. do fall into a different category.
It's kind of like with Christmas music and how multiple singers do their own Christmas album and thus each have versions of the same song. It's a lot different than a contemporary song sung by two different singers causing people to get upset that so-and-so is copying so-and-so (not necessarily on copyright grounds, but on lack of creativity).
I was actually impressed with the remake of Carrie. I thought it was very good. Obviously its not as iconic as the original, but the remake wasn't crap either. At lease in my opinion 👍
The kill for her bully had me feel a tad bit sorry for her, in a way.
But then I remembered that she almost ran carrie over and humiliated her to cause all of that to happen.
It was the same movie, just with more prettier actress which ruins the entire purpose with the story.
I'm young enough that even the 1998 Psycho was "before my time" so (while I saw the original version first) it wasn't a "new" movie to me...but I STILL found it ridiculous and unnecessary. Psycho (1960) is one of those rare movies that even 60+ years later is still excellent very very effective. I think there are some classic movies (especially those that are adapted from novels) where due to censorship, budgetary restrictions, lack of ability to create certain effects etc could be remade and be amazing, there are also some - and Psycho (1960) is very much one of them - that just need to be left alone.
Planet of the Apes (2001) did not have a "new twist ending". It had the same ending as the book that both movies are based on. I agree the whole Apereham Lincoln thing didn't make sense, but it is the OG ending.
"The Poseidon Adventure" is one of the greatest disaster film of all time but they just remake the classic with the 2006 remake film "Poseidon".
THANK YOU for adding The OMEN. Best horror movie ever and that remake was absolute, total garbage!!!
You guys forgot overboard. The chemistry between Goldie Hawn and kurt Russell just can't be replicated. And the remake with anna Faris no one asked for and has been forgotten and swept under the rug.
Yikes. That one exists? The mere thought! If nothing else, that story definitely wouldn't work in a modern setting - and from what you say, it didn't!
I'm glad to see several people sticking up for the Carrie remake. Chloe did a really good job.
Charlie’s Angels, Shaft, Fame, Blair Witch (even if it follows after the original, it still feels like a cheap remake), The Lion King, Flatliners, and Ghostbusters (2016) should have made the list as well.
I liked Shaft. That one doesn’t belong here. If anything its better than the original.
I wasn’t referring of the one from 2000. I was talking about the one from 2019.
The 1998 version of Psycho was a complete waste of time and money. Making a shot-for-shot of a classic film is something that a film student would do to study the techniques of a master, not something to distribute to theaters and expecting people to pay money to see it.
No matter how many new versions they make, Carol Ann's "They're Here!" will live forever!!!
Fun fact: Heather Langenkamp went from Scream Queen in A Nightmare on Elm Street to being a big time special effects coordinator.
I knew Psycho (1998) would be at the number 1 spot since Alfred Hitchcock is rolling in his grave by now!
So, Rob Zombie's Halloween didn't made the list. . . I still think Halloween 78 should of been left alone.
Thought The "Karate" Kid (2010) would've made the list. That movie was so uncalled for and a slap in the face of the original. Glad Cobra Kai is rectifying things.
So weird that 'The wicker man 1973' still holds the test of time. You feel such an unease during the movie. And what an ending!!! Broke my heart!
I do enjoyed the 2016 remake of "Ben-Hur" but I always consider the EPIC 1959 Oscar-Winning film starring the legendary Charlton Heston as my all time favorite!
I'm still trying to find it so I can finally see it again. I was so young the first time, I barely remember it.
Kudos on including "Arthur" in this list. The original has a very special place in my heart (and my wife's :D). The remake was indeed unnecessary if not laughable in the most embarrassing way.
They forgot to mention that “Conan the Barbarian” was also rebooted. It was crap, of course.
These reboots suck not because no one asked for it, they suck because of the executions.
Real answer: All of Them
@@InsideOutRulesEntertainment What are you like 7? Go take a nap kiddo.

I really like and defend the 2013 version of Carrie. Sure it wasn't as different from the original as it could've been thanks to the reshoots, but there's a lot there that is more faithful to the book and works better like the secondary characters. Yeah it's flawed and the original is a better film overall, but I still enjoy that movie a lot, I wish we could mix the qualities of both of them to make the perfect Carrie movie adaptation since it's my favorite Stephen King book.
And in the 2013 version you got the feeling that Carrie and her mother actually loved each other to where the ending is really heartfelt. Here's a frightening thought... What if Carrie really was born evil what if she was something like the Antichrist and her mother knew it kind of like devil's advocate? Who would we side with then?
There are certain classics that should NEVER be rebooted/remade
And occasionally some of them are and the remake is actually pretty good, not necessarily better than the original but still good
West Side Story is another classic that shouldn’t have been remade either
West Side Story (2021) isn’t a remake. It’s just another adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical. What is it with you people seeing another adaptation of a source material that was previously filmed and just automatically getting the word “remake” into your brains?
Thanks you for your video and channel
The way the list was headed, I was curious the remake of House of Wax with Paris Hilton would make it.
Honestly, you could make a dozen iterations on this topic.
Apart fom Paris being in it and doing nothing as usual i really liked that one it genuinely had a creepy atmosphere and good story for a teen horror early 2000's flick i even rewatched it a couple of times (ignoring paris hilton's part as we should)
Keep it up on your work and this video and channel
You DO know they'll never stop making Robin Hood movies, right?
-West Side Story
-Charlie's Angels
-Resident Evil
-Karate Kid
As a teen, I watch the original Carrie. I was scared of that shit for a while. And then this remake makes me hate the remade line way too much. Some can be good, but this one is bad, it somehow turns from a horror movie to a comedy one. It's just bad, it's personally attached to my emotion.
Chloë Grace Moretz did a good job playing Carrie. Amen. The 2013 version is my favorite. Enough said.
I really wished The Mummy could've worked, and I personally don't hate it as much as the criticism that it received! It's not bad, nor as great as the Fraser Mummy movies.
I am surprised The Karate Kid 2010 is not on the list.
Planet of the Apes 2001: 👎
Planet of the Apes trilogy 2011-17: 👍
you all should make a list like this for television shows
Remaking psycho, the omen and carrie was the biggest waste of time. Ever.
Disappointed that “taxi” didn’t make the list. Luc besson’s original was pitch perfect.
2003 Chainsaw is FAR superior to the 70’s version in every way…it took a film solely set out to shock the audience and made it into a VERY creepy serial killer horror that is the blueprint for how to reboot a franchise as well as make a film truly scary!
While I agree that the 2003 remake is a damn good and effective horror movie I don't know if I can call it better than the original.
the funny thing is that The NY Times actually rated Psycho(98) better than the 1960 original. Obviously 2 very different people, but it's still crazy to think about
One thing the omen remake did better than the original in my opinion was the death of Damian’s “mother” it was “at least to me” more chilling and also slightly more realistic
Didn't't like mom falling through the roof of an ambulance and the doors opening up? it was kind of hokey.
Sydney Prescott: Don’t f*** with the original
THEY REMADE NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET!?
I don’t know why HellBoy needed a remake but I hate it. I love the original
You can add the the taking of Pelham 123 to the list. the remake lacked the grit and grime of the 1974 version.
Andrew Garfield should play Norman Bates...
Totally amazing video watch mojo, marvellous job and I love footloose both versions of it too.
I really liked the Harbour Hellboy. And Robin Hood '18 is pretty entertaining.
The Carrie, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Poltergeist, Total Recall, and Robocop remakes were all good and the Arthur remake was HILARIOUS. One of my favorite comedies.
I feel so lucky that I didn’t know of any of these remakes
Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates felt like an isolated man who just didn't interact much, especially with women. Vaughn's portrayal felt like he was about thirty seconds from a jump scare, sexual assault or something along those lines. He hid his madness about as well as Jack Nicholson in the Shining. (Great movie, but Jack constantly looked ready to go total slasher movie the whole time)

I’m sure the firestarter remake will be on this down the road
of course everybody already mentioned the abysmal Ghostbusters - “you get a car! and you get a car! and you get a car!”
but let’s not forget The Thing (2011), which was cleverly disguised as a prequel, but ended up being another shitty remake
"A Freddy Krueger movie doesn't make sense without the involvement of actor Robert Englund" a wise and true statement.
I can already see the Train to Busan remake on a list like this.
Don’t think it will be good. But having Timo Tjahjanto directing it I’m a little hopeful it will be halfway watchable.
I actually liked a number of these, even though of course they couldn't be as good as the original, sometimes seeing an alternative take on the same story can yield different advantages even if it ends up with different numerous disadvantages. For example, the Carrie remake felt more satisfying a third act to me by upping the amount of carnage and directing it more towards the characters that deserved it.
Thank God, they didn't include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this time around!!
I agree. They’ve already featured it on their similar lists that it’s just gotten old. Better to focus on other remakes and reboots instead.
I'll give you all of these...except the Texas Chainsaw remake. This one doesn't belong on here. It was solid.
And I'll add that if you're focusing a lot on horror remakes here, then Friday the 13th (2009) should be on here as well.
I ❤️ this video and channel
Lina Wertmüller, the director of the original Swept Away, was upset about the remake. Adriano Giannini, who's in the remake, is the son of Giancarlo Giannini, who was in the original.
As long as we have the holiday of Halloween, we're going to get Halloween remakes, even if some of them end up being flops because SOMEONE wants to try something 'Fresh & Exciting' and they don't have the creative talent to back it up. Some directors/ writers have talent, yes, but it's more about the money.
" 'Plot A worked great back then, let's make the same one with better graphics. I bet we'll make even more money.'
'But the last time someone redid a movie, everyone hated it.'
'This'll be better, trust me.' "
And this, my friends, is why the lesson will never be learned. Directors confident that their remake will do better than another that failed. They want that money.
I actually like RoboCop, Carrie, the Texas chain saw mascara and A Nightmare on elm Street ( also where was Child's play 2019 that movie shouldn't have been Made!)
Two others I might add are Pet Sematary and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Both were pretty unnecessary.
They’ve already featured Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on their other lists. They don’t need to repeat themselves on here.
I liked Carrie (2013) and it made me go back and watch the original which of course was great but I still think the remake was a solid update.
Same! I honestly believe that the 2013 version needs as much love as the original. The 2002 TV movie adaptation’s special and visual effects are what you’d expect from a TV movie, but I don’t think they’re that bad, nor is that remake itself.
"Reboots no one asked for"
I clicked immediately to see how high up the Star Wars sequel trilogy would be on this list
I really don't understand the hatred towards The Nightmare On Elm Street movie. As a huge fan of the original run of movies, I thought it was refreshing to get a new take on the character - It's not a perfect movie by any means but people seem to hate on it way harder that it deserves.
That 'Did you know that after the heart stops beating, the brain can function for well over 7 minutes? We got 6 more minutes to play!' is still chilling to this day.
I'm glad Back to the Future, Splash, Chariots of Fire, Summer School, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Risky Business, Flashdance, Tootsie, Kramer vs. Kramer, Annie Hall, Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, Cocktail, Platoon, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket, Patton, Gandhi, Bridge on the River Kwai, The Princess Bride, Mrs. Doubtfire and Breakin' are not remade by Hollywood and I hope they never will. I hope Hollywood will leave those intact or else they will be ruined like they did to Footloose, Fame, The Karate Kid, Arthur and Ben Hur.

Ghostbusters 2016 should be number 1
I loved the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot lol it was good and the sound mixing was epic. Honestly I'm glad I never saw Tim Burton's POTA reboot cause the most recent ones are actually really good especially because of the technology used to make those films was crazy cool and Andy Serkis is brilliant at what he does. I might be one of the few who liked Johnny depp's version way better than the original, it's a childhood classic for me i was underwhelmed by the original for some reason i just found wonka too creepy in that one (as he should be i know it just didn't click with me as a child)
If you set aside the RoboCop reboot as just a movie on its own and not a reboot, it's not that bad. If you compare it to the original, then yeah it's bad lol.
I'm hoping they continue trying to make the Dark Universe, because that could be awesome. All the great horror icons in rated R horror movies, building up to Dracula. Then have one final film with all the monsters together, kinda like an updated, more mature The Monster Squad movie. That movie is so good btw...I love The Monster Squad.
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is boring and poorly acted and written.
The 2003 remake is genuinely scary, well written and well acted. It's infinitely better than the original and I'll die on that hill.
Keanu Reeves walking with that surfboard tho...smile
I will never watch another version of Footloose. Kevin Bacon and all the rest of the cast are not to be replaced. It's one of the best movies of the 80's IMO.
You ARE aware that the ending of Tim Burton's "Planet of the apes" is in fact how the original novel ends, right?
It’s unwatchable crap so who cares. The book also has the apes living in a futuristic city. Thats not in the remake, so what’s you’re point. Im a Burton fan but i couldn’t even make it till the end it was so terrible.
