Mastering the lee side on a paraglider

  • Sometimes, you just need to fly into the lee side on your cross country flight. I know the place shown on this video very well. It can be tricky in strong wind, but there's a way to master it. Still, you need some altitude to succeed, because otherwise, the Venturi wind will just block you in an unfortunate place.

    When I paraglided I usually ran if I was blown back well past the crest.

    Mastering the lee side = be high enough to avoid it x)

      If it only could be always like that!.. The XC flying would be much safer then.

      Do you have recolation of the wind speeds outside of the venturi?

    • @dymanoid
      @dymanoid  ปีที่แล้ว

      It was not too strong, something about 15-17 km/h

    Thanks so much for writing back to me. I have to learn to fly alone here after I leave the school and there isn't going to be any better pilots high in the air looking down to see if I crash like you do for others. I wish you were in the sky here where I have to fly and could behind the air and look down and see if I'm okay. Since I can't have that are at least I get you to tell me the truth is best you know it.

    Honest question from a mid level Pilot: I Know, that the Face of a mountain can act as shield from the wind. in the lee if you fly close enough, but I feel like its makes it that much more dangerous if you are unlucky and do hit a strong turbulance if you're close to the terrain... Thanks for the video and visualisations!

    • @dymanoid
      @dymanoid  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And what's the question? :) You're right indeed, facing strong turbulence close to terrain is dangerous. While you cannot guarantee it won't happen, but the more experience you gather, the more proficient you become in assessing the situation (wind, terrain, conditions, ...) In general, flying long XC routes almost always requires some lee side flying, so you have to train that too. Better to start slowly with light wind and to push the limits step by step without hitting the danger zone.

    Hey :) great video, thanks! 😊 may I ask you, how did u attached the camera? Do u have any special mount? :)

      Thanks for watching! I attach a special camera mount clamp to my carabiner and then connect the camera to that clamp using a selfie stick.

    Hi , nice flying and filming there. Qq: what type of cameras do you use? For the all around recording? U have only helmet cam?

    • @dymanoid
      @dymanoid  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! I use two cameras - the one on my helmet is a GoPro Session, and the one this video was filmed on is an Insta360 X2 attached to the carabiner.

      @@dymanoid and what type of case/system u use for carabiner?

    • @dymanoid
      @dymanoid  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just a clamp for attaching cameras, there are a lot of those on Amazon. The camera's selfie stick can be easily connected to such a clamp.

    Demi accélérateur et pilotage aux arrières pour avoir une meilleure pénétration au passage le plus dur, pour pouvoir parler de mastering. ;-)

    • @dymanoid
      @dymanoid  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I used the word mastering here meaning understanding, grasping what's possible. Flying accelerated in turbulence and close to the terrain is high risk and must be justified - if you are in a competition or this is your last chance, it's needed, but otherwise not. I assessed the risk and found it isn't worth it, I prefer safety over extreme performance. But that's me, the CCC pilots you see on this video surely flew accelerated the whole time.
