Procession of Saints | Santachem Pursanv | St Andrew’s Church, Goa Velha | Gomantak Times

The 'Santachem Pursanv' or the 'procession of saints' is a one-of-a-kind tradition that takes place in the village of Goa Velha during the Lenten season.
The statues of the 31 saints, placed on special charols (a kind of palanquin), are taken around in a grand procession along a fixed route, while the life of each saint is read aloud. Prayers are recited, and hymns are sung throughout.
Among these are some of the most revered saints like St Anthony, St Miguel, St Roque, St Joseph Vaz, St Francis Xavier, and others. Each person patiently awaits their turn to seek the intercession of the saint.
Rooted deep in history, this tradition of ‘Santachem Pursanv’ traces back to the 17th century and is still followed and practiced by the local community.
People from nearby villages make it a point to come every fifth Monday of Lent for this procession. Also, residents who have been away seeking better prospects tend not to miss this tradition.
