When it concerns motorcycle podcasts, and just podcasts in general no one does it better than highside lowside. Hosts Dave lang and Jason Reiger are a national treasure. As angry dad, these two help me sleep instead of ruminating. This episode has been one of my favorites. I shall be falling asleep soundly thanks to Dave and Jason!! Keep up the phenomenal work boys!!
For seat height, I found that seat width makes a big difference too. I added a wider custom seat to my bike and while its a tiny bit thicker, the extra width at the legs made it much harder to get my feet on the ground. Just a thought for those looking to get an aftermarket seat.
I also typically clean my gear allong with my bike (at least in the summer) at the car wash. I have an Aerostich pants and jacket that I will spray with either some Dawn or Simple Green before scrubbing with a soft brush. Then after it dries, I reapply “Camp Dry” or “3M Skotch Dry” and allow it to dry outside, allowing the waterproofing to cure to the fabric. I no llonger carry rain gear.
46:44 I do this all the time on my 500exc. I travel to Tahoe, or out to Colorado, and camp, then unload the bike and go out for adventures. Never an issue. Coming from Oakland, it is a mindset issue that you have to overcome. We’re still dealing with repairs for our civic that was stolen from our house in the hills recently. Have never had issues when traveling outside of areas like oakland, LA, San Diego, etc.
Re : leaving truck in at trailhead and subject to vandalism. We sometimes park nearby, but in a public place, where someone is close by, like a tavern, cafe etc and let the owner know. You could even park at the ranger station and the ride your WR from there
40:51 one other consideration for dual sport or dirt bikes is that seat height can really matter when you’re climbing that hill and spin out, and all of the sudden find the bike springing up to that factory height spec as your weight shifts off, and you can no longer touch the ground!
I had to fix my bike by the side of the road just last weekend. Needed a pair of pliers and some starter fluid. Got it done and running again in 15 minutes, versus needing a tow.
Love the comment at 1:02:24 about doing an off-road training. Switching to te other end of the bike spectrum and get that feel really helps you reinvent you riding on your own bike. Great advice!
9:20 I worry about this all the time. I ride an M8 Road Glide with slip-ons, but they’re California legal, which means they’re probably not much louder than stock. Either way, the parking spots are right up against the building, so I roll the bike out into the street before starting it, start it up while I cringe in response to how high it revs on startup 😬 and then roll down the street basically just using clutch friction. I’m the least Harliest of all motorcyclists who rides a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
I think Justin wants to know how to get back to his truck because the end of his ride is at a different location. My suggestion would be to ride with a buddy. One would park at the destination, the other at the start. I've done a lot of backpacking in the Sierras and this is something I've done many times.
I wish bikes were listed by their weight with a half tank. It's less of a penalty to those with large capacity tanks, and it's around the average weight the rider will actually experience, and it's less likely to scare off someone who's busy reading specs without actually taking one for a ride.
I had a vision around 12:00 regarding starting your bike early in the morning. Imagine a tri-pod with a box on top, with one side taken off. The inside of the box is lined with sound deadening foam. It's height adjustable and you just set it about 12" behind your exhaust while it warms up. Eh?
Just befor Christmass 2024 I started watching your entire playlist HS/LS. Unfortunately I don't know how to sort it from 1st to last so I am watching backwards. I am at HSLS S4E10 that means: 76 episodes done, 47 to go. It is amazing to see how you have changed (you have had girlfriends - no kids), how the guests went through etc. I will let you know 47 episodes later that I am done - hopefully before next Christmass 2025 ;-)
I'm with Ryan: I have the gixxus 750 and, while I also have a sweet 821 twin, there is a special joy in riding an I4 fast and smooth through mountain passes and twisty roads. When you get it right you feel good, and hearing that motor sing is a real joy. Point and shoot is fun too, but an easier fun. Props to Honda for making this machine, and props to Suzuki for making a beautifully balanced machine like the GSX-s750. It goes against the great sport of spec sheet racing , and the gixxus is all but dead, but this is a wonderful class of bike. Maybe a show on this side of riding before the mid-size 4s disappear.
Zack it happened because you guys are awesome! I still stand with TURBO BRUCE, bring on the TURBO MOTORCYCLES!!! I do not think Johan is an a-hole as he is aware that he has a loud bike and takes appropriate steps to keep the noise down. I think the 8 cylinder was done for naught but puffery. Well, Bob the seat height standard for a number of reasons is given at its lowest setting (if adjustable) and unladen, too many variables. When I look at cycle ergo and the computer model isn't quite flat footing I know it would be fine for me with my sizeable bulk on the seat. They may be test ride averse but they are very much pro selling. Go in there and tell them Im ready to take one of these today, let them run your credit, and then say "OK, I'm ready for my test ride" If they turn you down go somewhere else. You could also look around and try to find a demo day near you, I go on few of those a year they're great fun. Wow Lemmy in that pinny is without a doubt the funniest thing I have ever seen! HS and LS great names for pets not as good as my dogs Chablis and Chardonnay but still good lol! A.I. like disco still sux! Now we Zack to say "SPURGEON DUNBAR DAD BIKE ADV'ER!" Our intrepid hosts have also cut back on the "Thats a whole nuther podcast" quips this season. Chase you'll see what I mean in a few weeks. Strange bike this week sounds cruiser-ish and idle and sport bike-esque at high rpm. Maybe something like FJR 1300 or Honda ST1300, big sport tourer? They are wrong and so was I, fell like I was closeish though. Good job Lance! Another fine show Old Sports see you in 2 for the season finale!
About tank grips. I've tried riding without tank grips. Ever since I bought my first motorcycle I tried tank grips and from then on, that is the absolute first mod that I add to all motorcycles. I just actually changed the GYTR grips for higher-quality Stompgrip for my R7. There's ways to get rid off the residue in a couple of minutes. But tank grips are a non-negotiable for me in my motorcycles.
So, i actually dont use the liner in my track suit. I wear an a*s undersuit and ditched the liner. I also run a back protector, chest protector and hip protectors though too. Planning on getting an rst airbag suit this year and using the other suit as a spare. 1:00:09
A while back Ari advised a viewer to get a bigger bike because his bike was "screaming" and said that the 300cc bike was probably working really hard to sustain 75+ mph. What bike (or size engine) should that rider buy? 600cc? Liter? And should he switch from a cruiser?
Really depends on the rider, a liter bike is a big leap for me tho, if he just wants the screaming to stop a 600 is good enough and some 400 bikes can handle highways better than others. Also cruisers can go fast as well so he doesn't need to switch if that's his style.
Oh man, that's a good reminder. I've changed bikes twice since I last built my toolkit. I don't know if I have the correct wrenches for the axles on my current Scrambler 1200XE!
I won't spoil the Rev trivia bike, but damn does that thing sound like shit compared to what it sounds like with an aftermarket exhaust. Absolutely garbage. Somebody get him an aftermarket exhaust, please.
In my mind the "true" weight of a bike is ready to ride with an empty tank, and I think that should be the standard- you don't have to fill your BMW GS rally tank completely to ride around town... Also, GET SOME TANK GRIPS! They're amazing for, well, grip. They also protect the paint from any dirt/ dust that might turn your pants into fine grit sandpaper.
There's no substitute for going to a dealership and sitting on the bike. For example I'm fine and comfortable on a tiger 900 GT with 820mm seat height, but my feet were dangling on a dukke 790 at 825mm (170cm, 78/79cm inseam)
G’day Chase, when I watched the latest podcast it appeared that TH-cam ‘automatically’ removed the Motul add read and replaced it with the usual TH-cam ads I receive.
It is US noise emissions causing the hole in power in second gear, not Euro 5 based on where and when the sound level is measured and at what distance.
Comment #8 at 37:03 hit home lol. Bought a BMW G650 X Challenge and at first it was way too tall but the rear shock was preloaded for bags and extra fuel. It was much better correctly adjusted but I still had to buy the only factory low seat available on the west coast to make it just right.
After listening to the question from Riley about his CB650 and the answers you gave, it brought up (at least in my mind) a possible future topic for y'all. That is comparing the different engine configurations in regards to positives and negatives. From my personal observation, I have an '07 Yahama FZ6 and an '08 Aprilia Tuono and they are as different as day & night and not just due to the difference in horsepower. The inline 4 of the Yamaha doesn't begin to "wake up" until you get up around 9 grand on the tach while the Ape is starting to pull my arms out of my sockets around 5-6 grand. I'd be curious on your thoughts regarding the pluses and minuses of the different engine types, including crank positions. Thoughts?
Just had to come over from listening on Apple Podcasts just to comment….. I think the chap from ‘comment 14’ needs to be sent a Highside Lowside T-shirt to be worn when he takes his 2 little cats to the vets!!
Seat height is given, and discussed, with the bike on the side stand. Seat height, at a stop light, while sitting on the bike, being able to get your foot to the ground is important to those of us that are not over 6 feet tall. Also, the seat height, on the side stand, seems to never take in mind if the bike has a mono-shock. A mono-shock raises the rear seat way up there, and getting your leg over the rear seat can be a surprise with old hips. A "single" number for seat height, especially when compared bike-to-bike, is pretty meaningless. Now, how 'bout the distance of the seat to the peg and/or peg to the ground? Some bikes have really high pegs, so your knees can really be bent up tight sitting on the bike. (for some reason, this height is often commented on, on The RevZilla Daily Commute.) (Listing British bikes from the 60's and 70's as "Dry Weight", really did make sense. What does it mean if your Triumph stops leaking oil? It is out of oil -- it's natural state. I always thought Triumphs being listed as "Dry Weight" was just English humor.) Sorry about being a Curmudgeon, but being able to get a foot down at a stop sign is important to me.I used to sell Triumphs. We had a Classic, the Legend, intended for short riders, advertised with a low seat height. But that 3-cylinder engine was so wide, short riders often had difficulty getting a foot to the ground. I usually moved short riders, looking for their first bike, over to the Honda or Suzuki dealer. Good grief.
"he's not breaking the law therefore he's fine" "he's breaking the law therefore he's an asshole" This line of reasoning is so obnoxious and slavery-brained. The state does not dictate morality, Dunbar.
Every diesel truck and most Subarus (with aftermarket exhaust's) are as loud as a bike ridden quietly. I enjoy the sound of a nice engine, not so fond of a screaming engine in the morning. When you talk to your neighbors (?) they will let you know if you are annoying (the other “A” word)
the cf moto 450 is the best selling bike here is Portugal and Spain. it's sold out since it's release. I believe there's great value in off road bikes that are lighter than the middle weights. did a test drive and the bike is awesome and under 6000€. my personal bike is the transalp
Does anyone have any tips for watching MotoGP in the UK that saves using the over priced video pass? Would really like to follow from the start of the season this year but the cost is so steep!
A comment for spurgeon. On Cycle World TH-cam channel they have hey podcast with Peter Egan and Kevin cameron. I thought you would like that. Also, maybe see if Kevin Cameron will come on the podcast?
I only watched to the first hint. I dont know the result, but let it be known, I think that is a CB650R...a lackluster 4 cylinder referenced in this episode🤞
You can't ride with an empty tank, but you can ride with 1 gallon. I think bike's weights should be with 1 gallon of gas. That way you don't get punished for extra gallons
I do not really understand the love for the Ibex 450 and Chinese bikes. There already is Versys 300X, NX500 (470cc), Tuareg 660, Tenere 700 (689cc), Transalp 750, Africa Twin (1084cc), BMW GS If you want a well built ADV, you are covered up the entire range.
Lance's VFR sounds terrible! Is it in need of a new set of plugs, a valve adjustment, or a new exhaust? My 2015 sounds way better, but maybe the TBR exhaust is making the difference.
maybe it's the fifth valve surgeon talks about. lol. seriously though, he should know better. vtec changes the valve actuation from 2 valves to 4 valves at the crossover rpm. my vfr is a 4th gen with gear driven cams and no vtec and i know that.
I will never forget how wide both of these guys' eyes got when they started talking about how they supported government regulation on bikers. This makes me wonder where they draw the line on govt intervention on our personal lives, but something tells me I wouldn't like the answer.
I'm going to use up my video comment on the very first listener question. If you make your motorcycle - or car, truck, ATV, etc - louder than stock with an after market or custom exhaust you are an A-hole. Just because your machine meets noise pollution limits doesn't mean it's acceptable. I love the sound many engines make but that doesn't mean others feel the same or that I can enhance my own aural experience to the detriment of others' environmental or aural experiences. Admittedly, I would like to see stricter laws and increased pressure and citations from law enforcement to curb such mods because loud pipes don't save lives, they just piss of everyone who has to hear them as they pass by.
Not quite sure this is the forum to ask this question. A friend of mine is been going through a couple of bikes and his journey on finding what he likes. right now he’s on the BMW 1800 cc cruiser. he has an old bike that’s caught my eye. It’s a Yamaha FZ1 2007. but we have a problem. This will be my first bike. I’m 58 years old and I think I can use my elderly superpowers to learn how to ride this bike. I’m familiar with manual four wheel vehicles and I’m thinking if I keep it lower than 7000 RPMs, I’m good. Do y’all think this is a good idea or I’m an idiot
for fun on comment 3. A flat 8 engine will be more smooth than the 6 cyl. learning the difference between a flat v6 and a boxer 6 is a big difference. If there is enough weight in the bike, the 8 cyl could be worth it. but those things are too heavy at that point anyway.
"SPURGE DUNBAR", The oversized human with an ego to match! Suspension is wayyy too soft and there is not enough power for bashing logs with my skid-plate.
@Revzilla - I'm not interested in the racial comments at 9:15. Had to drop way too many podcasts for going down a similar route. Please hold yourselves to a higher standard & don't be one of them.

Guys can you bring Liam “Lemmy” Irving as a guest in podcast; Love to see Spurge, Zack, Ari hanging around with him.
Yes!!!
Who's Jack?
By the way, Lemmy looks a lot different now compared to his time at Revzilla.
@magellanicspaceclouds sorry I meant Zack.

Special surprise was amazing! I can't believe its been years I have been watching you guys, thank you and I hope there is more years to come :)
Inseam challenged 😆 A great way to say I'm short! 😂
I had to fix my bike by the side of the road just last weekend. Needed a pair of pliers and some starter fluid. Got it done and running again in 15 minutes, versus needing a tow.

I think Justin wants to know how to get back to his truck because the end of his ride is at a different location. My suggestion would be to ride with a buddy. so good to see a new hsls, ive just been going through the older episodes these past few weeks, i wonder what you have planned for the season finale

The special surprise just killed me. Also, sorry I misspelled Zack's name a couple episodes ago. Salty Zak is still best Zach.
In my toolkit Ive used electrical tape, hex keys, a multi-tool, and zip-ties all on the side of the road. Fits right under my seat.

I only watched to the first hint. I dont know the result, but let it be known, I think that is a CB650R...a lackluster 4 cylinder referenced in this episode🤞
Wrong again 😢
You can't ride with an empty tank, but you can ride with 1 gallon. I think bike's weights should be with 1 gallon of gas. That way you don't get punished for extra gallons
I do not really understand the love for the Ibex 450 and Chinese bikes. There already is
Versys 300X, NX500 (470cc), Tuareg 660, Tenere 700 (689cc), Transalp 750, Africa Twin (1084cc), BMW GS
If you want a well built ADV, you are covered up the entire range.
It's simple, it's way more capable off-road than anything that's out now sub 500cc. It's like a Tuareg 450. So for a beginner it really stands out.
@@FoomanshoeIf you want sub 500 off road capability why not just go for a CRF Rally then?
I would pay for revzilla magazine. Bring back print. I miss magazines.
Can a new rider start on a Kawasaki z900rs?
I wouldn't recommend it, but I also inadvertently effectively-learned on a Shadow 1100 with no ABS and drum brake in the rear.
What's the point of riding gear? If you crash so often that you need gear to save you shouldn't you quit riding or pay for lessons instead?
Crap GT ain't got nuthin on y'all, real moto journos. And a good thing, too....
I will never forget how wide both of these guys' eyes got when they started talking about how they supported government regulation on bikers. This makes me wonder where they draw the line on govt intervention on our personal lives, but something tells me I wouldn't like the answer.
"I'm doing wheelies every time on my daily ride to work... am I the a-hole?" 😄
Are you kitten me?
Needs more cats. Digressions as well.
Adam too
Not quite sure this is the forum to ask this question.
Even at lower RPM a 1000cc motorcycle still pulls quick.
Not as much about RPM as it is about Throttle Control.
Spurg doesn't do safety. He yolos the shit out of his bikes.
for fun on comment 3. A flat 8 engine will be more smooth than the 6 cyl. learning the difference between a flat v6 and a boxer 6 is a big difference. If there is enough weight in the bike, the 8 cyl could be worth it. but those things are too heavy at that point anyway.
While I agree that the flat 8 is really just a marketing ploy. It too, similarly to the six, can be perfectly balanced.
"SPURGE DUNBAR", The oversized human with an ego to match! Suspension is wayyy too soft and there is not enough power for bashing logs with my skid-plate.
Ape with wrong tool fix motorcycle anyway. Keep rolling. Find burger.
I know I’m bored out of my mind when I click on this podcast… it doesn’t help…
What? Lol
Damn lol.
@Revzilla - I'm not interested in the racial comments at 9:15. Had to drop way too many podcasts for going down a similar route. Please hold yourselves to a higher standard & don't be one of them.
I thought it was a light hearted joke
It always weasels in as a lighthearted comment
This comment is sarcastic right?
No- I've had enough of racial division. Zero tolerance.
@litreland764 can you tell me what's wrong with what they said because I don't understand
