  • Hello Everyone! It’s patrick and today I’m giving a summary and review of the story “The awakening” By Kate Chopin. She was an american author who wrote the majority of her stories in the 1890’s and as a whole they were generally critically well received. The outlier however was “The Awakening” which was panned for lacking morality, and essentially bricked her entire writing career. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that Chopin’s work came back into vogue, but at that point it was already far too late.
    So what was in the story that made critical reception so poor?

    What books would be good to compare to this for an essay?

    • @estocproductions1553
      @estocproductions1553  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're strictly looking for books, then i think a good comparison would be the Scarlet letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. If youre looking for stories of any sort, yellow wallpaper by charlotte perkins gilman is a good choice, or "A jury of her peers" by Susan Glaspell!

      @@estocproductions1553 thank you very much I will look into those. If you are familiar with 'To the Lighthouse' by Virginia Woolf, would there be any books you could recommend to compare about gender roles?

    this was required literary reading at Universty Illinoiss Chicago and it influence my decision to not get married. To bad, this is not an awakening this is putting a film over one's eyes and an assault on the American family and traditional values. I should ask for my money back from the school.

    Warning: This isn’t necessarily accurate and leads me question whether this person read the book themselves and/or understands symbolism

    She abandoned her loving husband and kids to live in the city as an artist on her husband’s dime. Gee, I can’t imagine why feminists love this book so much

      samuel georgi i have to ask if you read the same book. She had a husband who loved her. She was treated very well by him, and she stepped out on him and their children. “tHe pReSsUrEs oF sOCiEtY” don’t justify any of her actions. She wanted to be selfish, and that’s what she did.

      I am feminist and think this book is strange. The author first considered the title, A L lost Soul. Now, read the book under the first tititle, you will be reading a totally different novel.

      @@redram5150 to say that she irresponsibly entered a relationship and had kids is an opinion stemming from priveledge. she wouldn't have had the option to remain single in that society, she was damned if she did and damned if she didn't.
      at the end of the day, yes, she was selfish, but people wouldn't have been hurt if she could've done what she wanted in the first place.
      that's why women fought for feminism.
