Like my favorite Lady friend. Guess what she did? Journeyman Welder & Asbestos Abatement died of cancer. Ate organic never smoked. The good die young and the BGs just go on & on. She did leave her water & 40ac to sum decent Pioneer types next door. Hillbilly country. She had horses.
It would appear that Hempcrete would be a very effective replacement building material for Paradise California. If the houses there had been constructed with Hempcrete originally they might have withstood the conflagration that destroyed them.
Hi there I hope it does give hope and a solution to the people who are living in buildings that need to be changed or to those responsible for building new housing. Spread the word please that Hempcrete is the solution for safe healthy private or public housing.
Thanks for the video. Unfortunatly I am unable to grow my own hemp because the goverment gang won't let me. Is there any other material I could replace it with, so I can use this technique?
Very informative .. So I imagine a penetration with a double insulated Chimney stack should not need any extra insulation? And does grout bond to it well? ceramic tile would be beneficial to the fire rating with a wood stove near by or any source of heat
During WWII Henry Ford *built a vehicle out of Hemp 100%. She ran on Hempoline her crankcase Hempoil. No idea the gas mileage she got.* Henry found a way to make PLASTIC out of Hemp so the doors were hemp plastic too. To the folk (s) who created this video or anyone else: Would the blow torch heat for ten minutes and a fire storm heat compare? Any ideas on temperatures reached? fishbaywoman@ gmail.com thanks in advance.
Good stuff. Now show us how it performs in chronic damp, or in a flood - the sort where floodwater sits several inches over your floorboards for several days, complete with silt and some dissolved sewerage from the town upstream.
Sorry but that is a ridiculous demand nothing will survive that whether the flood water sits a few inches or meters above your floor it doesn't matter, either don't build houses in a flood plain or demand that your local council or authority plans for climate change. Your complaint is a bit like "now show that my hand doesn't burn if you hold it in a fire!!".
I could watch this video for hours! I'm thinking of a voice over. I have filmed it using my phone and was thinking of uploading it to you tube and using it in my Kickstarter project. May I have your permission to make it public? I will post link to private google drive doc as soon as upload completes. OK to proceed? .Hempcrete rocks man!
The flame went out @ 8:26. For the sake of this test at no time did I see the usual effect of a flame to a surface. I saw NO INDICATION of flames spreading. I would need further testing but right now I'm convinced this is a safe medium to build with when humans will be living inside. What's the R factor per inch or per the tested block prior to slight damage? TY Kindly.
Well with this type of building material firefighters won't have lots of work on their hands. Insurance companies wouldn't have to pay out. People wouldn't lose their valuables due to fires. What a win win situation 👏
a raging fire is going to last a lot longer then 8 minutes and its going to be a fuck ton hotter then a blowtorch. the hempcrete may not light on fire, which is great, but its still going to disintegrate under the immense heat.
the immense heat you talk of would wreck any house...what is being shown is that hemp wont ignite under these conditions...it would be pretty costly to use a raging fire and an actual hemp house....most houses in US are of wood construction...go figure...
Of course a fire will last longer than 8 minutes but if you put a blow torch up against nearly any other section of building material it will start to burn ie have flames. Hempcrete will not as you can see. In the few houses that have used Hempcrete or Hemp plaster that had the unfortunate incidence of fire, that I know, of the Hempcrete portion was not damaged enough to cause collapse or even be damaged other than scorched at surface.
In the raging fire you speak of, the walls are usually adding to the fire. If you remove all of this surface area, what's left? a couple of couches/ curtains/ and some carpet to burn? In many cases, if not all, the studs aren't even exposed beyond the hemp so they are well insulated. Probably a minimum 60% of contributing factors to your raging fire won't exist in a HempCrete House.
Stevennickel I agree Steve, Adding to your comments, if the carpets, curtains, furniture etc are made from natural materials (hemp?) then they are even less likely to burn. Many fires are started and continue, especially those that cause loss of life, are due to synthetic furnishings made from materials such as polyester and polyurethane. Take a look at the black scorch marks above windows of such houses the next time you see a news report about a domestic fire.

You have several facts wrong. It is not expensive because of the Lime. At the moment the highest cost is the Hemp, if you do not live near a supplier as it is expensive to transport. The weather has to be really bad for a Hemp building project to be delayed. The expense of freezing CO2 to 'bubble through' a mix is not needed as CO2 is very slowly reabsorbed from the atmosphere into the lime.
A crop that can be grown almost anywhere is expensive. It sounds like widespread cultivation would fix that. Straw might be the right answer to the wrong problem, which assumes an alternative is even needed.
so there has to be a temperature and time increment that hempcrete is not fire proof against. from the look of your video it looks to be about 5 minutes and whatever temperature the torch burned at. if you tell me what brand of touch you used I can look up how hot it gets.
Hi Amanda. Hempcrete is non inflamable it will disintegrate and char at very high temperatures but will not create flames and so won't spread a fire. The aim for me is to create a healthy home that will not kill you from toxic fumes before you even feel the heat of a fire. Hemp is a natural material and if combined with other such material will make your home far safer. There have been no tests on whole structures yet as far as I know but of the few examples that happened in real 'unfortunate' time left the Hemp components still standing whilst everything else was destroyed.
I don't work building in the UK but I can give you an estimate material cost for you or advise your architect. There is no rule of thumb for a Hemp House as it depends on plan and builder as do most houses. If you keep the plans simple and include such aspects as passive solar heating etc it should be no more expensive than other good quality builds and the savings will be huge.
@jmpmcd Hi I am working on an affordable, replicable, relocatable monolithic budget for an off-grid under-the-planning hempcrete build at Moonbase One in Somerset. I have a google doc for the budget for mine, Share?
Simon Masters your project sounds good but the relocatable aspect is a problem with hempcrete as it would be with any masonry material. It might work if encapsulated within panels but to make them insulated enough they would be quite heavy. I have had many requests for help with mobile tiny hemp homes but for this hemp fibre insulation is better.
Building with Hemp thanks for the reply mate...but not at the stage where i need an architect yet...still waiting for my current property to sell..when im closer to the projest start i will contact you if that is ok with you...
Hemp houses have extreme good qualities for people to live in. Healthy atmosphere, great insulation and vapour permeable. And this videos shows the fire resistant capabilities. For every house build of hemp ca 8 ton of CO2 NEGATIVE is produced so it is part of a solution to diminish climate change. See The Ultimate Hemp Reports for farmers, builders and politicians: the-ultimate-hemp-reports.com/
hemp is a amazing material, buts its effectively a bi-product of the paper industry which uses only 25% of the plant. though that is great for environmental standards, if the demand for hemp gets too high it risks getting into a position where bio-fuel currently is, where demand is sent to other country and events such deforestation happen in order to make land to grow the plant, that will basically cancel out the environmental friendly standard. All Things is Moderation.
Today we started construction on our permitted renovation using hempcrete. It took us 6 month to get it permitted since hempcrete is not a certified construction material in the U.S. ... yet. We live 25 miles south of Los Angeles. Check out my blog at beatekirmse.com
Sooooo... ummm what is wrong with traditional cement block? Last time I checked, they were not catching fire either. I guess I am confused because I don't see a reason why concrete needs to be replaced with something more expensive that at best does... exactly the same thing as concrete.
Charles Bryan Concrete : No insulation, Heavy, CO2 intensive, uses limited resources........Hempcrete : Insulating, Hygroscopic, Lightweight, Carbon negative, made from renewable resources !!!!!!!!!!!!
Charles Bryan Cement is manufactured through a closely controlled chemical combination of calcium, silicon, aluminum, iron and other ingredients. Common materials used to manufacture cement include limestone, shells, and chalk or marl combined with shale, clay, slate, blast furnace slag, silica sand, and iron ore.
Charles Bryan yeah ofc is sounds good... cement block is not traditional, it's used just last 70 years or so... before most of houses were made out of wood, earth, straw, hemp, clay etc. and there are many reasons why use hempcreate. To produce hemp we need CO2 from atmposphere, but when we producing cement we put GHG in atmposphere. And concrete blocks are actually one of worst building material with very high cost for nature...
I am going to cultivate industrial hemp in my village. I am not waiting for any stupid government license. They have given rights to same sex married and abortion which are useless activities. But when it comes to things that will actually benefit humanity as a whole, they don't promote such activities.
In Sierra Leone, West Africa. I have found out a lot about the benefits of hemp. And I think my community and I need this hemp cultivation to uplift ourselves from poverty line.
the hemp industry has alot of growing to do before it can be considered close to "moderation", hemp crop cycle is extremely short and the way it returns most nutrients to the ground make it great for crop cycling, meaning it can be grown in-between current crops, even boosting the yields of these other crops. also how is it is wrong to call it a bi-product of the paper industry, also if 25% is used for paper the wastage can already be used for fuel, building etc. please eliminate ur ignorance :)
No wonder this is illegal, the firefighters would be out of a job. Do a test on what houses get substituted for weak inferior material would be burn up like straw but this...

sad this shit is illegal in america even tho theres no buds on the hemp plant
Its illegal to grow in the US yes, but doesnt mean you cannot buy it from Canada! Lol
Because the use of hemp would be considered "illegal" due to how it can be used as a non-nicotine drug. It's a really stupid reason, really.
