- Up, Down and Across. Bungle's bouncing up and down on his trampoline, Geoffrey's yo-yo goes up and down, and you get the idea where we're headed with this - but I bet you never expected to see Zippy on a trampoline. Sort of. This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 13th September, 1988.
Obviously, directions are the subject we're learning about in this one, and we're treated to some interesting footage of hot-air balloons, funny reversed video effects, and all the gang on a roller-coaster (again, sort of). You've got to give them credit for how much they crammed into this episode, including some animations from Telemagination (who'd have been working on The Telebugs around this time - remember that?), an odd Brady Bunch type of scene with only Zippy, and a Rod, Jane and Freddy number about an old machine that sees everyone else join in one-by-one. My favourite moment, though, has to be this exchange towards the end:
Geoffrey (patience personified): The game is called "Stick the tail on the donkey".
Bungle (super genius): What do I have to do?
Oh, and the cartoony cross-plaster gave me a chuckle, as did George finally asserting himself over the placement of that photo. Plus don't miss Zippy sounding a bit like a Dalek around 8:32. (That really was one of Roy Skelton's other jobs, by the way.)
The promo at the end for the Rainbow comic brought something back to me. Did anyone else reading this use to get it?
Many thanks to Lee for providing this recording.

Zippy is such a cutie. 🥰🥰❤
One show which enjoyed a wonderful double life - firstly the innocent fun of our childhood then when revisited in the pub as adults the camp humour and innuendo of the grown-up world.
I want George as my emotional support hippo.
Rainbow was a cracking children's show
Yeah, one of my very favourites back then!
@@VideotapeFTW Mine and all Rainbow was a brilliant show which everyone watched wherever they are in the country
14:20 Quite why Thames still kept using a "Colour Production" slide in the late 1980s is something of mystery. All their programmes had long since been made in colour and it unless you had a black and white TV it was manifestly obvious it was in colour.
I want to see Zippy bounce on the trampoline,go through the roof and up into outer space.BOOOOOIIIINNNNGGG!!!!😄
Happy 77th birthday Geoffrey wherever you are xxxxx
Amazingly well spotted.
Geoffrey was the best in Rainbow.
Rest in peace gerfre
He was the best
Hew was blessed
Why can’t zippy be careful
The sounds of the machine noises that Geoffrey, Rod, Jane and Freddy are making reminds me of the sorting machine from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
"How many fingers am I holding up?"
