As an employee at a ski sight. It was probably not the employees fault. Besides it is better that they skipped a chair because if the skier messed up then the lift would have to be stopped.

@@ImpalaWes their job is to ensure the lift keeps running not to herd skiers like cattle. Anyone who's skid knows the what the deal is at the lift line but you always got one awkward bunch that want to be on the same chair. To be honest I don't know enough context of the video here but lifities primary job is mechanical related. I do agree the people on chair deserved the snowballing for not tagging on with others when there's space.

@@zahzoo4754 usually they'll pair you with strangers if it's just you. You have to specifically ask to be seated alone. Kind of like at an amusement park....there's a good chance you may be on a ride with a complete rando unless you specify otherwise.

I usually head for home when lines start to form, but can sometimes work my way through a 15 minute line in 2-3 minutes using the above strategy.

Hate the people that didn't get on the chair. Not the ones that did. That 1 person didn't stop 3 others getting on.
Sometimes people are too slow and it could cause accidents, so they take the next one. Otherwise employees would need to slow down the line which wouldn't help anyone.

That's what happened today. More than once I've fully intended on sitting with 3 other people, and we are all ready standing in a line. But all of them stayed behind when I moved forward to the chair because they wanted a chair to themselves.

no. lifties run the lifts... depending on what mtn they are on they might not be at the base so there's no ticket scanners to direct the lines. but also could be a mechanical reason they are running the lift on 50% capacity.. high winds sometimes mechanics will call for 50% load etc... need more context before u pass judgment. and the reason lifties don't mess with lines is because it takes away from their ability to watch ppl load safely, there's normally only 2 stationd at a bottom depending on the lift etc.. so they both need to be there doing their job for liability reasons.

only in North America where there's barbaric lift infrastructure. Anywhere else in the world you wouldn't see this many people in 1 place on a ski hill. Probably the worst area to ski in the world with small mountains. That's why every decent north american skier is a backcountry skier

I live in Alaska and went to Ski resort myself last week. it's usually quiet here, but it was crowded little more than i expected due to spring break. While standing in line, a woman with her young child was right next to me in the same row, followed by a group of 3 people and many others behind. Before getting into the loading zone, i asked 'Can i join you?' Actually it didn't have any meaning and i wasn't really expecting an answer because a lot of people just join other groups and get a ride together without permission especially when it is crowded. This happened to me all the time because i was alone. Of course, she didn't say anything at that time but when we were sitting on the lift, she said "The answer is no. Never ask me again if you are not going to wait for the answer". Okay, i'm a foreigner living here for years and still i'm not exactly sure it was my fault or not but after that, i decided not to join any group and i rode the lift by myself.

I can’t speak for resorts or skiers in Alaska, but in Northern California there is a separate line for single riders and often times the lifties aren’t guiding riders, but if your group doesn’t have enough people to fill the chair’s capacity, then skiers from the singles line are expected to join to make a full chair. I’ve never asked permission to join a group, I only ask to confirm the number of skiers in the group to make sure they’re at least one short of capacity. I’ve never encountered anyone with such a nasty attitude on a chair. That woman is not welcome in the sport AFAIC. If she had some reason to want to ride with no strangers, it’s on her to say ‘actually we’d prefer to ride alone’. She could have said that even if you joined her group before waiting for an answer and you could have dropped back. What a b**ch.

Not sure about other countries but here in Scandinavia we have a separate line for solo riders that fill up all empty spaces for every lift

Where i live there is just a ball of people and a gate for every seat. And someone out of that ball of people will fill every gate. In 97/100 cases basically. No problem to wait for the next row if you want to be with your friends. Just leave enough space for solos to fill up

@@RD1R Sometimes a ride can be very long, some even stop for several minutes or half an hour and you never know, when it moves again. Some may decide on their way up, which exit they should take, for example if there is a weather change or too many people etc.
It's not uncommon to go as a group and makes sense. If you complain, offer to go as a single and be ready, whenever there is a seat open.
The amount of times I roll up to the wait here sign and no one comes with me is laughable. Like.. I'm not gunna bite, we can share a lift.

I was a lift operator for a few years, and sometimes when there's that many people on the lift, they need to space people out. So that can sometimes be an empty chair every other. and that's because there's a counterweight to counter all the people's weight, and if that's maxed out and you put more weight on it, you're just asking for a derail.
Facts. Especially on these old summit fixed grip chairs. Adults were less fat in the 1970s and more chairs were families with kids, so the engineers designed for lower average weight per chair.
Weather can also decrease the load that the chair can safely handle.
Then why install the chairs in such an order to begin with. I call bs

I did my fair share of skiing (200+ days probably) and i never saw that happen. So while i trust the OP (as original poster and operator😀) i think this might be rare.
@luka zupie I've worked in Big Sky Montana and Mt. Baker Washington as a lifty and I snowboarder everywhere in between with well over 1,000 days on the mountain, and while it is somewhat rare, maybe not as rare as you think. It happens on older chair lifts, mainly on busy powder days. I worked a lift that had a massive concrete block attached to the lift with pulleys and cables. We had to keep that clear of snow, the weight of the snow on the block would affect the lift.

I just thought it was because they stand there with their mouths hanging open, not knowing how to get from the line to the chair.
I used to be the guy telling people to take off the 3 pairs of socks they were trying to stuff into boots. Rental tech, could hand people the right size as they walked up without asking their size. Well, the first day I had to ask.
That same line and those same people are gonna be there whenyou get back down though...
Its the auto-ticket scanners... people get stuck waving passes at the scanner and don't have time to catch up to their peoples... (and yes its A-basin)

I snowboarded for the first time today, it was pretty empty but if I had the option I would probably say no, In a nicer way though. I was practicing and fell pretty much every time and no doubt would have knocked down whoever is next to me. I eventually got the hang of it though, so now I could probably say yes.

I've asked to join people on the lifts and NOBODY has ever said no, and I have never ever said no when somebody else asked to join. That just does not happen in an American ski resort.

This is why in Switzerland there is an Express "Single" line to fill the empty spaces. Always use it, even with Friends unless it is a really short Que.

This is human nature. Most people will not fill the chair unless they're forced to - especially if it means mixing skis and boards.
If there's not a lift attendant near the front of the line making people fill every seat, they generally won't do so voluntarily.

Sometimes people aren't quick enough to be at the right position at the right time or fall or frightened. It's okay to take the next one to avoid accidents. Honestly I went snowboarding for the first time to day, it was mostly empty but I fell nearly every time, the last thing I wanted was to take other people down with me. That would also increase the chances of the lift getting stopped and everyone else getting slowed down because I fell.

I was born in Colorado and I’ve lived here in my entire life. Not once have I gone skiing or snowboarding. I laugh that people blow so much money on a theme park in the snow… no thanks. I enjoy my snowshoe hikes where I don’t see a single soul all day. I’m not going up into the mountains to hang out in a city. I’m getting up there to do the opposite…. Y’all priorities are bunk.

This is a good reason my recreation usually is me, alone or with one or two others on our dirt bikes hitting the hills. Wintertime is a great reason to hit the desert.

So many times as a single ive lined up with groups of 3 who give me this look and then literally just stand there while I get on the lift myself. Those are the real idiots. Ive done everything right as a single.
