- hromadske is with one of the most media-famous brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - the 47th separate mechanized brigade "Magura". This brigade prepared for the counteroffensive for months: it trained abroad, received a lot of foreign equipment, and already at the beginning of the counteroffensive was among the first to be seen in Zaporozhzhia. Now the brigade is advancing in the vicinity of the village of Robotyne - in the direction of Melitopol.
Hromadske journalists observed the work of the artillery unit, which works on the American self-propelled howitzer M109 "Paladin". In those days, the gunners began to fire cluster shells provided by the United States. They say that most of them break up.
While the gunners were working, the crew of the German "Leopard" tank was resting after the battles in the Mala Tokmachka area. The battles here are tough, the tankers said. Their work is particularly dangerous - the russians hunt for "Leopards". As a Swede, all I have to say about the equipment we sent (CV90, strv 122 and Archer) is that if you get it destroyed but they let your soldiers survive to live another day, they have done their job.
Vehicles can always be sent more of, but Ukrainian lives can not be replaced.

Great to see a Leopard, and hear some of the advantages. As one from USA, I just love this channel. It's a lot more interesting when you see normal, fallible people on the ground. hromadske delivers . . . We see war for the first time, and hopefully last, with interactions of soldiers and reporters. This reporter is calm, brave, curious, and quick on the uptake, even bookish. Yes, it's the ordinary man who fights this war and defends his homeland. Humans adapt and learn fast if they have to. Something else. People who hyped the Western weapons must know that they're only weapons and no "Wunderwaffe" and can only be as good if the operating hands know what they're doing. This war is pretty "tech leaning", modern field radars, air defense systems, and more so drones, drones,drones. But there are still infantry fights, meat grinder and horrible trench fights where too many brave men lose their life.
As fast as we humans develope high-tech to make our life better and exciting, we barely improve our thinking and behaviour in regards to military conflicts, war and human suffering as such, unfortunately.

Ну, внутренний - это зелина шобла, а внешний - сша и их шестерки.
Great episode! "Forester" looks old enough to remember the "good ole days" of field artillery. Instead of tablets we had large charts and a range/deflection protractor. We also used sliderules to derive firing data. Our primary means of target acquisition were observers imbedded with the infantry and armor units. Everybody had to carry around paper maps that we rolled up and stored in powder cannisters. Sometimes we had to strap our butts into an OH-58 Kiowa helicopter and go find our targets using binoculars and a paper map. Rarely did a single gun operate independently because it took a large team to acquire and compute firing solutions . Also there was no GPS. We used surveyors who used optical instruments or we just made do with our paper maps, but that wasn't as accurate.
I have to laugh at myself for using the term "paper maps". Forty years ago I would just used the word "map" because they were only available on paper. But how many of our younger generations have actually used a paper map? Or have even seen one for that matter?
I would love to sit down with "Forester" and hear his experience about how field artillery has evolved.

Your unique style of reporting is so valuable in helping us to understand what Ukraine is experiencing. But seriously, get that young lady a pair of boots! She has no business tromping around in places with spiky plants and aggressive insects without proper footgear.
It's not just aggressive insects, they have slugs! Poor girl could have lost a leg. 😁
Yes, it took a long time for guns to be laid and sighted back in the pre GPS days, that is for sure. Now days a lot of guns have built in GPS and radar and can be laid and sighted in minutes compared to the many hours it took to do it accurately in the past.

I remember many tiring discussions in the newsgroups of German newspapers about when the leopards would finally be delivered. I also remember a demonstration in front of the Federal Chancellery in Berlin, where we all, draped in Ukrainian flags, shouted as loud as we could: "Olaf Scholz! Leopard!"
Today I am happy that the cat has finally arrived!
