- In this video Geoff from the VegOilGuy channel and I will be recreating a Viking chain, found in Mandemark on the island of Møn in Denmark. The chain is currently in the care of the Danish National Museum. It is on display in the “digital collection” here:

VOG sent me here and I must say, I'm not disappointed!
My family is from Norway and this project has peaked my interest.
Your craftsmanship is quite amazing to watch!
Thanks for sharing and as always keep building👍
Glad to hear it. Thank you!
Thank you for the large scale demonstration of the single vs double fox tail! It was super helpful!
Happy to hear that. I will keep that in mind for upcoming videos. Thanks for watching!
Great work! The illustration using big wires was very helpful for us in understanding the chain.
Thank you. Good to know. In many chain tutorials it had to see what is going on due to size.
Oliver, that was stupendous work. Truly. Not only did you manage to cover up my appalling casting imperfections, you stitched together 200 rings, beating my personal record by 199.
I’m thrilled that you clearly watched my video on Jeweller’s Saw techniques and managed to learn a few things, despite my cleverly disguising these as a buffoons errand.
Now, the coffee beans I understand, but why do you want me to cast a silver Tea Leaf?
Thank you good master.
Yes, that was a clever disguise on your part. ;-)
Nothing like coffee-cuff-links and I thought you British fancied tea leaf brew?
Gorgeous work!
Came here from the VOG channel, I enjoyed both videos and subscribed to your channel as well. Great stuff!
Welcome. Kind and skilled man VOG. Thank you. :-)
Came over from Vog's channel wondering how to make a foxtail chain thanks guys for your two videos
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Loved this collaboration and it's seems I have found another great channel, good work chaps hope to see you collaborate on more work soon.
I came from Geoff’s to see this made very interesting well done mate that would’ve taking a lot of time 👍🏻😁👏🏻
Thank you. Yes, I think there was about 8 hours worth of bending metal to my will. ;-)
Vog sent me. Nice videos and great collaboration. Hope to see more of you and Vog.
Thank you. He is quiet a skilled caster.. and yes, we may have something in planning. ;-)
Geoff sent me as well. What amazing work. Kudos on a brilliant collaboration. You got a new subscriber.
Thank you and welcome!
I thought I'd come over from VOG's link. I wish I had your patience and precision! Was a good collaboration. Well done guys.
We had a lot of fun doing it. Thank you.
Very nice project. It turned out great. I know there was a lot of hard work put in to this project. Great collaboration with VOG, End result was off the chain, well, maybe on the chain here lol.
Wow! Amazing. Now I know why the good ones cost so much on Etsy.
Yes, chain making is very time consuming, but also good fun. :-) Thanks for watching.
Beautiful end product you got there. Great skill. TY for sharing. Could you perhaps include a few "Glamour shots" in the end where the chain is presented in all its glory? Perhaps on a dark wood backing and a few nice accessories along with it like a Norse style knife or similar? Sexing it up would earn you subs. People go all soft for these kind of things especially with the continued focus on viking era stuff. Should be good :-)
Keep it up, you are doing very very well ;-)
That was a good video. You have some serious skills. Long hours and dedication to create a beautiful piece.
Thank you very much. Yes quite few hours went into the project. :-)
Casting silver is easier than most other metals. You can do many things with just a powerful propane torch and oilform sand. I made similar project as one of my first silversmithing projects. There was very similar chain found near me but as i remember the chain was not connected with endpieces by soldering but by rivets.
Yes, silver is a nice material to work with. I differs from chain to chain. Some are soldered and some are hollow and riveted. Thanks for watching.
Was hoping for a longer reveal at the end. Still nice work!
Sorry, I'll keep that in mind. Thank you and thanks for watching!
Super hilfreich! Danke
Gern gesehen! 😊
It is amazing work. Thank you so much for your wonderful video
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Well done sir!
Thank you. It is a nice little project Geoff and I put together there. :-)
:) A lot of rings! Nice end result!
Thank you. Yes, that is a chain of many hours, and Geoff had to learn to use an entirely new software suit to model the little animal. :-) It was a fun and challenging project.
hi @Shaping Silver this project inspired me too make my own. I have a resin 3d printer and want to print the animal heads and than cast it in silver do you maybe have the 3d stl file for them it would really help me out here. great video!!!
You have to ask VogMan about the files, he did the 3D design and casting. Thanks for watching!
This is so cool, thanks for sharing this with the world =)
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Lovely! Can this chain be drawn through a draw plate to make it longer/slimmer after trueing?
I don't know, but it is very similar to foxtail, so my guess is that it can. Let me know if you try it. Thanks for watching. :-)
How many "rings" do you need to make to make different size necklaces?
I asked to use the water closet at VOGs and he said sure but I had to come here and subscribe...
and ya know what.. that was a happy accident!
LOVE This Old Tony reference !!!
Very kind VOG. :-) Welcome to the channel!
I wonder what a triple foxtail necklace would look like. With larger skinnier rings. Or would it still look like a double foxtail?
No idea. Perhaps I'll make one some day...
Looks great :) Came in here from VoG
😊 very good work
Thank you. 😊
Det blev sku da pisse godt det project i havde sammen der... pisse fedt oliver Fedt smykke :)
English: I was a super cool project you 2 had there... Beautiful jewelry you made oliver :)
Ja, det var godt og udfordrende lille projekt. Tak skal du have Janick.
Yaayyy! No time to watch yet, but can't wait! What is VOG?
Geoff is the VegOilGuy, he is a very skilled fiend of min, who has his own channel where he cast and makes casting equipment. He made the animal heads on the chain. You have to go see that. :-)
@@ShapingSilver thank you - I shall go take a look - sounds interesting!
Did you solder the last link that you cut to connect the finding and chain together? If so, did you use a lower melting solder than you did for the links, or the same one?
Yes, I soldered an open link to the finding and soldered it shut with easy... just to make sure I didn't melt the links.
@@ShapingSilver Excellent. Thank you.
G'day Oliver! Another Aussie, sent over from Geoff. Really nice work and a great collaboration. By the way, how'd you go with the Aussie heat? It's a warm 37°C today and summer starts tomorrow... don't suppose you could send some snow our way?
G'day! Thank you. I came back 3 weeks ago and it was actually sort of cold in Adelaide, but normally I don't mind the heat. I'll see what I can do :-)
Another person from VOG's place--amazing work!! I wonder what I could do if I had 1/4 of your patience and skill :) ok I'd be happy with 1/16th
Thank you. It looks like you are doing some pretty neat things youself.
Briliant job.
Thank you. 😊
VOG sent me, subbing because of this old Toby reference!
Thank you, he is a kind and skilled guy VOG. I'm a Toby fan, it crackes me up every time. :-) Thanks for watching!
aint he called Tony?
@@thombaz yes, he is... and I shouldn't be editing at 1AM. 😄
Who is Toby
I'm another new subscriber from VOG :) and liking the videos. Could you tell me the name of the tool used to apply solder to the rings? It looks far better than the way I do it. Thanks.
It's a solder paste syringe. You can get them for different metals and melting points. Thanks for watching!
@@ShapingSilver Thank you, I've been cutting up solder strips for so long I didn't even realise these things existed. I'll give them a go.
@@greensun5998 I mostly use paste for small items, so I can only recommend it. I have a feeling that it is more brittle than normal solder, so I don't use it on "stessed" joints, but it might be because much of it is flux and I misjudged the actual amount of metal. Good luck with it.
That grip suggests silversmiths are a lonely group. 😮
*LOL* Nah, I just do blacksmithing as well. ;-)
Interesting channel just needs a bit of audio leveling on edit.
Hello! Nice work. VOG sent me!
Very interesting video chap, I used to know an old silversmith in Birmingham England, new subscriber here,, may I ask how long it took you from start to finish?
Thank you. Not Hamish Bowie by any chance? Way to long. My best guess is about 8 hours with wire making. Thanks for watching.
@@ShapingSilver his name was Paul kerns, not sure if that's how his second name was spelt. He was a ledgend in these parts, he dropped a bag of diamonds in the beer garden at the pub once, they never found them all. RIP.
@@ShapingSilver that's good going, it looked a fiddly peice. Looked fantastic finished.
And this is george Clarkes amazing spaces
It is?
@@ShapingSilver your voice is very soothing, much like his:)
👍👍👍👍
And you haven't gone nuts yet? What's keeping you sane?
Making stuff like this. ;-)
Did you mean thank you This Old TONY?
Yes. Maybe editing at 1AM isn't such a good idea...
You've got great skill sir. I'd recommend though you look into better audio. Your skills and knowledge deserve to be heard better :)
Thank you. You're not the first to mention that and I will look onto it. Thanks for watching!
Got another chair for a VOG party crasher?
Always! :-)

Where's the beans?
They are still on my bench getting ready. ;-)
