5:24 I find that the boy scout leaders of superhero teams are always at risk of being seen as boring and get a lot of hate: Cyclops, Superman, Leonardo, Captain America (check out the Honest Trailer for the first Avengers movie), etc... While rebellious loners like Wolverine, Batman, Raphael, & Iron Man often get all the love.
I grew up in the 90s and this was literally perfect. Perfect. Cyclops using a Mega Optic Blast to land. Night Crawler cutting loose with his teleportation. Storm glassing sand. Rogue RKOing a Sentinel. You are clinically dead if you don’t like this show. No pulse.
The top five best written characters in 97 IMO 5. Magneto, even if his actions at the end of the season are undefendable, up to that point, I genuinely saw where he was coming from and he genuinely tried to do good 4. Nightcrawler, this guy always knows what to say to those who are in need of advice and encouragement, so glad he’s a main character and member of the team now 3. Cyclops, like many have said, he has a lot of badass and awesome leader scenes in the show (though I disagree that we never saw this aspect in the 90s show) 2. THE Remy Leabeau, Gambit The guy was a always trying to put a smile on people’s faces and was always there for those he loved RIP 😫😫 1. Rogue, a character I feel could be argued as being the perfect representation of X-Men. Her struggling with grief and being pushed to the edge of questioning what she’s fighting for is the best story arc of the show so far
I met the voice actor for Wolverine (Cal Dodd) and the voice actor for Gambit (A.J. LoCascio) at New York Comic Con in October of this year. They were both super nice to me and I was super happy to meet them!
The cliff hanger has SO much more to it than I think you realize. Wolverine going more animalistic is a cool touch for the next season, but the foreshadowing of Onslaught is massive if they play it right
Cyclops is not dull. He's one of the best leaders ever and gives Captain America a run for his money. He's an expert tactician and can strategize on the fly while in the battlefield. His optic blast is powerful enough to destroy a planet when at full power. Even Wolverine admitted he wouldn't wanna be on Scott's bad side. He's a DJ and has had multiple girlfriends. He's never afraid to make the tough call and even has a body count. He defeated some of the most powerful X-Men singlehandedly. He's like an amalgamation of Professor X and Magneto (he shares Professor X's hope for peace, but also believes in taking action). He often carry the burdens of being a leader. He's probably the most important member of the X-Men. Brian Singer buried him in the films because he was a Wolverine fanboy. Stan Lee called Cyclops his favorite character for a reason. Most people who hated on Cyclops have never picked up a comic.
Oh my Stars and Garters this show freaking rocks. I was one individual who unfortunately didn't watch the original series until '97 was announced. I was born in '99 so back then the original was probably hard to come by. However, I did had a full marathon as I got prepared for the series and it was so cool. If I really grew up in the 90s, I definitely would've loved it more. Once X-Men '97 hit the scene, things were definitely taking to the next level and in fact this might be better than the original. The action, the animation, the cast and the twists...OH LORD you can't look away from all this. And like all of you, that theme song will always be playing in my head. Also that "Black Leather" joke, VERY WELL EXECUTED!!
Hey it’s funny you mentioned the cereal thing. I did that too and felt the exact same way about X-men 97. It felt like being taken back to the Saturday morning cartoons. This season was so special. I pray the next one is as good because I was floored by the quality on every level.
This show was an absolute blast. I’m an early 2000’s kid so I didn’t grow up with this show. Once I heard this was coming out I decided to binge the original show and loved it. Watching the new show made me noticed other characters with the main one being gambit. I wasn’t into Gambit too much when I was younger but dear god this show made him one of my favorite mutants. When he showed up in Deadpool and Wolverine I cheered cause I didn’t think we would see Gambit anytime soon. Also the animation is gorgeous, it’s a perfect balance between modern and original animation. The music is impactful and amazing, Storms music when it kicked in episode 1 I was looking with such amazement in my eyes. The emotions going through this show was insane, I laughed, I cheered and most surprisingly I cried. Something animated that makes me cry is an accomplishment . That also includes some dialogue that has such meaning to it as well that it hit. To continue the Dialogue is astounding. They be throwing these hitters that you can make quotes on. Sorry for the rant but this show deserves the praise and god let’s hope season 2 will be good too.
As it stands, X-Men '97 is the highest-rated Marvel show ever on Rotten Tomatoes after Ms. Marvel. I don't know if it beats The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, but it's a damn good cartoon all the same.
This show truly BLEW ME AWAY!!! I swear I am flabbergasted how phenomenal this series was even though I never grew up watching the show in the 90's and yet I felt for these characters and felt the weight of all the deaths in this show and how traumatic it is while tackling very deep themes and compelling ideas and concepts like tolerance, acceptance, racial identity, sexual identity, evolution, family kinship, amending past mistakes, self love and so much more with some truly awe-inspiring blend of 2D and 3D animation that looks INCREDIBLE and so fluid. The show has some of my favourite takes on some of my favourite members of the X-Men like Cyclops, Storm, Magneto, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Gambit, Beast etc... Plus Bastion was also an excellent villain and really touched on a lot of realistic themes stemming on humanities intolerance of and refusal to accept the next stage of the evolutionary process. I swear I can gush so much about this show as its singlehandedly the GREATEST PROJECT MARVEL HAS RELEASED EVER SINCE INFINITY WAR AND ENDGAME! I can't wait for Season 2
I never skip the introduction. I love that they've revamped the theme song for a new generation, while ensuring that it sounds recognisable to the original.
Being a 90s kid watching the original x men, i was so scared about this new series and how it can hold a candle to the original but after the first 3 episodes I was like OK THIS IS F**** AWESOME! The only hard part was watching a new episode the day it dropped cause at the time I was at Disney World, and i was so tired from the long day.
There’s actually a rumor that Marvel’s planning on creating an extended animated universe by bringing back some of the other shows from the 90s!! Those included X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man. It’s been WAYY too long since Marvel has given us a great extended animated universe, as this past decade, they have NOT been putting much love and effort into their animation department. Hopefully X-Men 97 is the start of something truly special!! I’m currently more interested in that than what the MCU is doing right now.
DIdn't they also have an Avengers cartoon then? I remember watching some reruns of these shows on Disney XD a few years ago with my friends, and... they visually didn't hold up to us. Yet the DC animated series from that decade still do!
@ There was an Avengers cartoon back then, and it was rough. Though I don’t think it took place in the same universe as the other shows. I recently watched an episode of the Fantastic Four show, and while the animation definitely improved in the last portion of episodes, those first few are hard to look at. It’s worth noting that this was around the time that Marvel was starting to go bankrupt, hence why their shows didn’t always look the best.
When I saw X-Men 97, I immediately remembered how much the original animated series influenced me in my childhood. My political views, my choice of profession, my character.
This is how to do a cartoon reboot, X Men is able to capture the Saturday morning Fox Kids vibe! Hopefully Disney does a Gargoyles reboot, but they won’t due to it not being a Marvel cartoon!
The idea of you making a bowl of cereal before hitting play specifically to recreate your Saturday morning childhood days for me is the most adorable thing you have ever said. And here's the thing I believe you I believe no question that you made sure you had your favorite cereal and milk and your favorite bowl and your favorite spoon right there ready and waiting Wednesday morning for the awesomeness to take place.
Your right though about the half and half thing with original creators. This and live action one piece both did that and they turned out phenomenal! Live action one piece isn’t perfect but it feels like the heart of the series told in a different medium and light. X men 97 did the same. My dad didn’t watch the original but 97 made him interested. Whereas live action avatar didn’t and it felt more like it was trying to be the most important thing instead of keeping to the spirit of where it came from.
I love the X-Men and I loved X-Men 97. It was beyond amazing. It definitely surpassed my expectations. Before it came out, I think many of us were expecting it wouldn't come even close to living up to the original series we grew up with. I agree about the animation. Sort of an uncanny valley effect at times where it felt incomplete or a low frame rate. But the action sequences were amazing. Definitely some strong anime influence there. Some of the episodes/writing felt rushed. A couple story threads should have been told over a few episodes so when a big reveal happens or there's a resolution, there's a better emotional payoff. Besides that, this show was just amazing. I couldn't praise it any higher, it was so well done and captured all the right elements of the X-Men, both the 90s series and the comics.
This show was a huge love letter to the fans of the old cartoon. This was my first introduction to the Xmen and its characters. I loved it so much that I could never bring myself to watch the live-action movies aside from the first two. Like you said, I feel like Wolverine is overshadowing the others but at the same time, I do think he's a great character. My favourite character in the series is actually Gambit because he reminded me of my late uncle who also enjoyed playing cards. And Rogue was my childhood crush and the reason why I love girls with Southern accents. The original series really shaped me as a kid, and when I started watching 97 I had that same feeling of being a kid again, overly excited for the next episode. Part of me was a little worried they'd mess it up somehow because 20 or so-year-old continuations or remakes often do. But this once DIDN'T! It felt exactly like a continuation and it didn't treat me like a kid and held my hand. It hit me with all the dark stuff hard and my jaw was on the floor with most of its episodes. I really can't wait to see season 2 and see how they continue this. I also hope they do a continuation of my other favourite cartoon from the 90s. Spider-Man The Animated Series. If we get that I feel like my life would become five times better.
The thing that spoiled this series for me was when they stupidly bait & switched “X-Men ‘97” into “X-Men ‘79” by having them all switch into their older uniforms in the last two episodes. I hope to God that they return to their Jim Lee uniforms next season (especially Rogue, Cyclops and Jean). I was sold those iconic uniforms and that’s what I want/need.
Rogue's was representiive for her I think. it was her outfit from when she was more villiain inclinded. So it was her own way of kind of trying to be cold again in the world.
What a shock giving the original creators of something and giving them vital say and control over the decisions is better then a bunch of corporate suits deciding things
The origional showrunners are amazing people. I got to meet them once and have a really good talk...from an indie filmmaker noob to legends, and they were a ton of fun.
The best X Men property to come out in quite a while. They managed to show proper respect to the franchise, something that Fox arguably didn't towards the end, after Last Stand.
Well done Doug, thanks for another great one. The OG early 90s show was part of my real intro to x men, I think about the time age of apocalypse came out too (loved seeing that 1-handed wolverine cameo in DP&W)
I am pretty impressed with how they handled the Maddy stuff. That was such a rough time editorially for Scott AND Jean and after watching this show I even revisited the 1st series of X-Factor which I had REFUSED to acknowledge for years.
It’s probably a good thing I didn’t watch the Netflix show. The 2010 SHYMALAN movie was already bad enough, really. The animated show will always be the best.
Huge X-men fan here. Loved the movies and cartoons. Never saw the 90’s show I wasn’t alive when it came out and always thought it looked corny. But holy shit X-men 97 is hands down the best superhero cartoon since Batman the animated series. Marvel knocked it out of the park with the show! Cyclops is now one of my favorite X-men!!
X-Men 97 was such an amazing quality production. Shows that Disney can make good productions if they want to. I've never seen another series like it and I don't think they ever will again.
I liked X-Men 97 for all the reasons you mentioned, mainly because Eric & Julia Lewald, Larry Houston, & so much of the OG voice cast were brought back in some capacity. My nitpick, I think where it sort of "disappoints" & where XmenTAS excelled is that long-form, extended arc storytelling that would sometimes span over four or five episodes (The Phoenix & Dark Phoenix Sagas, Beyond Good & Evil). They crafted those arcs much like the source material as an experience. You're given breathing room; time to digest some elements, explore newer ones, & it made the conclusion more impactful. X-Men 97 knows it only has 10 episodes to cram as much as they can in them, so very pivotal arcs with Madelyne Pryor/Cable's origins feel very rushed & are borderline disorienting. We don't necessarily need a 22-episode season, but 10 seems so compact for a brand as big as the X-Men.
It's a shame that one of the people working on this show (Beau DeMayo) was a sex pest, but he wasn't the only person who brought this show to life. The passion shows on the people who created this excellent show.
At the same time, he did write something like half of the episodes, so it’d be a bit ridiculous to diminish his input just cause you dislike him and what he allegedly did. Especially with “Remember It” which was based on his own real life experience involving the Pulse Nightclub shooting where he had friends who were present at the time.
I legit was so scared of this production turning out to be another failure given Marvel Studios previous track record, but man, I was so happy to have been disappointed by my own low expectations for this show. Easily one of the best superhero animated shows of the latest years.
Hands down the best thing they did this year without a doubt really hoping this gets more than one season supposed to be getting cameo's in the next few movies and there officially coming after secret wars I'm looking forward to it Gambit's sacrifice best episode remember it 😂😂
One thing I love about the show is the script. A lot of the best speeches and lines from the show you wouldn’t hear in a mcu movie today because Disney is a bit embarrassed to have characters talk as younger people talk today. Everything in their movies has to be casual and have a joke. X-men 97 was not afraid to give characters corny lines or really well written dialogues that felt straight out of a comic.
X-Men 97 is one of the absolute best series I have ever seen. Episode 5, 9, 10, and 7 are excellent and My Top 4 favorite episodes from this new series. Overall, I love X-Men 97 and the villains were incredible
5:14 Which, IMO, should have got more seasons. 7:05 Yeah! Give us STORIES!, not LECTURES! That's what's missing from commentary like this now: SUBTEXT, METAPHOR, and ALLEGORY. Sounds like this show's creators have more love and respect for the X-Man and what they stand for than whoever makes their comic books now. I was 8 when the 1st X-MEN animated series from the 90's and it blew my mind with the concepts and ideas it threw at me, so I agree with Doug on that part. I got some (more) streaming TV to catch up on, and kids' breakfast cereal to eat it with!
Im not particularly an X-Men fan and this is one of the best superhero cartoons ive ever seen in my life. That should tell you how good of a show this is
My only complaint about this show was the fact it was released on Wednesday mornings. Literally the only one. I was fully prepared to get up early and make myself a bowl of cereal and turn it on every single week. That tiny bit extra would have made me happier, but that's amazing that my only complaint is they didn't perfectly force me to relive waiting for a new episode as if I were a child again. Perfection. More please.
I’ve watched it twice by myself and once with my husband and the Genocia stuff made me cry. The way they handled it was done beautifly. Overall they did a very well job with this show and I’m excited for season two.

The voice actors for Cyclops and Magnito did a great job of recreating the original voices.
Ray Chase is a hell of a talent.

I met the voice actor for Wolverine (Cal Dodd) and the voice actor for Gambit (A.J. LoCascio) at New York Comic Con in October of this year. They were both super nice to me and I was super happy to meet them!
🎶On the second disneycember Doug gave to me two Wolverine claws and a cigarette from the disney brand🎶
Keep it coming guy!
Everything you just said was right!!
Hey it’s funny you mentioned the cereal thing. I did that too and felt the exact same way about X-men 97. It felt like being taken back to the Saturday morning cartoons. This season was so special. I pray the next one is as good because I was floored by the quality on every level.
On the second day of disneycember the critic gave to me.

I hope we get multiple seasons!!!
The show made me feel like I was 7 again.
Same!
As it stands, X-Men '97 is the highest-rated Marvel show ever on Rotten Tomatoes after Ms. Marvel. I don't know if it beats The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, but it's a damn good cartoon all the same.
We'll see, I don't know.
It's so awesome! It got me pumped!
Magneto as a hero is something that need to stsy, i mean for the love of god, in the comics he bascially a permament x men member
I’m glad to see your enjoying X-Men again and all it took was bringing back the 90s show. Those Fox movies haven’t aged well.
Being a 90s kid watching the original x men, i was so scared about this new series and how it can hold a candle to the original but after the first 3 episodes I was like OK THIS IS F**** AWESOME! The only hard part was watching a new episode the day it dropped cause at the time I was at Disney World, and i was so tired from the long day.
ikr! I was worried too!
4:17 if you’re a multi-platform gamer, seeing this show mixing the Sega Genesis and the Nintendo into one console is just amazing 😅
There was a time when my older sister’s biggest crush was gambit.
Remy was quite the charmer.
and that time is now?
Them firing the show runner worries me for the future quality
When I saw X-Men 97, I immediately remembered how much the original animated series influenced me in my childhood. My political views, my choice of profession, my character.
This is how to do a cartoon reboot, X Men is able to capture the Saturday morning Fox Kids vibe! Hopefully Disney does a Gargoyles reboot, but they won’t due to it not being a Marvel cartoon!
I hope to God they do a gargoyles reboot! I loved that show as a kid!

2 things:1 this is by far the most entertaining disney plus tv show I’ve seen in 4 years and 2:this made me watch the original x men cartoon
4:40 Totally disagree. That episode was the greatest piece of X-men related media ever crafted.
"To me, my X-Men."-Cyclops
Don't know why, but that line gave me chills
Cause it's badass that's why!
When you hear that bell in the intro, it really is time for X-Men.
X-Men is a kickass show, now you know!
I really hope they can give Spider-Man:TAS a revival as well.
Cause it deserves it.
We NEED Spider-Man '98!!
Now that you've done this, Dreamworksuary, Twilight Tober Zone, and Bat May, you should do Nickuly/Aprilodeon.
1:49 - 1:53 That callback is so meta 😂😂
X-Men ‘97 isn’t just one of the best shows of the year, it’s also one of the best Marvel series of all-time.
Facts! They just did everything perfectly!
I hope some of the later seasons show more X-Men in the 90s Marvel Animated Universe 🌌
The theme song is 🔥
What a shock giving the original creators of something and giving them vital say and control over the decisions is better then a bunch of corporate suits deciding things
That’s just crazy awesome. And i says that as someone loves X Men The Last Stand dearly.!
First we had Animaniacs in 2020
Now we have this in 2024
Welcome back, Fox Kids!
Don't forget Batman Caped Crusader (as controversial as it is)
@ I actually liked it. Hamish Linklater did a great job continuing Conroy’s legacy!
This show was incredible, but now rewatch it while playing Marvel vs. Capcom games or X-Men Legends games.
This show crushed it. And by making it come out weekly helped people get up to speed if they fall a couple eps behind
A lot people say doug talks too much about this show, but you're wrong he hasn't spoken enough.
Fun fact: the story board artist put in some marvel vs capcom refrences in the fights 😁
Well done Doug, thanks for another great one. The OG early 90s show was part of my real intro to x men, I think about the time age of apocalypse came out too (loved seeing that 1-handed wolverine cameo in DP&W)
It was originally a kids show they had to keep it family friendly
But I'm so glad they didn't! There's still the cornier moments thrown in there, but when it goes dark, it goes DARK!
I am pretty impressed with how they handled the Maddy stuff. That was such a rough time editorially for Scott AND Jean and after watching this show I even revisited the 1st series of X-Factor which I had REFUSED to acknowledge for years.
They tried doing what you said on the Last Airbender show, the original creator left during production for "creative differences"
@@Nightman221k He wrote 7/10 episodes, that's a lot!
Best Marvel Cartoon Ever and Best continuation of the original 90's Cartoon
I love x-men 97 it’s really awesome and badass

Sounds like this show's creators have more love and respect for the X-Man and what they stand for than whoever makes their comic books now. I was 8 when the 1st X-MEN animated series from the 90's and it blew my mind with the concepts and ideas it threw at me, so I agree with Doug on that part. This show is excelent. Highly underrated.
