    Just found your channel and am so happy because you are in a similar zone as I am. It is hard for me to find gardening channels that have a similar climate as I do. I am now binge watching your videos and have already found some good ideas. I am in town and have only a lot but I do have a yard about the same size as your garden and I also have chickens. My ground is not frozen at the moment so I have been scooping out the chicken run and filling my raised beds. I too mainly got chickens so I wouldn’t have to buy amendments for my garden beds every year. The eggs are a bonus.

      I'm glad you found the channel. I hope your in town garden does well. Biggest problem my viewers have with in town gardening is the sun being blocked by homes.
      Chickens are wonderful for so many reasons!
      Thanks for watching, Kimberly.

    Not bad! Have been planning to try those out here in Finland.. i ll probably try to organize some sweet potatoes to grow in my little polytunnel. The summers are just too cold for many things unless u can cover those poor plants somehow 😮 like tomatoes, if u want any, put them in the polytunnel or alike 😛

    • @togetherweharvest

      Sounds great!
      Start growing those slips real early. At least 7-8 weeks before planting. Meaning, put those potatoes in moist soil so the slips can get to proper size before planting them.

    My grandmother grew up in the countryside of the state of Virgi,. She and my great-grandmother used to make pig feet in the oven. It's awesome to see how others on the other side of the globe in a different culture make them. And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.

      We started 4 sweet potatoes indoors that produced 50-60 slips. We planted about 30 of them. As you saw, some produced better than others.

    Nice work. Please consider adding more details on your prep and growing techniques, amendments, and timing, specific to your zone.
    Those kind of details really help to develop single source vids for subscribers, especially for those living in similar climates.
    For example, what date did you start your slip growing and what size were your slips at final planting?
    Did you get them in the ground before or after memorial day?
    How much and type of compost did you use? Any store bought amwndments. Type and amount of mulch at start, any midseason additions? Grown anything in that spot last year? Any pest managemwnt issues, are you growing organic?
    Hope the suggestions are helpful as you grow your food, and channel. Have enjoyed the vids so far.
    We will be snipping the last pumpkin of the season this week before the hard freeze comes next weekend and planting the garlic. Hope you are enjoying what's left of the beautiful fall season up this way...

    • @togetherweharvest

      I see what you mean. Concerning the questions you brought up, I can definitely make a 'complete growing guide' video. This was a harvest video - so I wasn't totally focused on too many details. Good to know you'd be interested on that. You have good suggestions.
      Good idea with the garlic - it's easy for folks to forget about planting this time of year.
      Take care!

    Thank you for this very encouraging video. But are you able to share anything specific you did to actually grow the sweet potatoes in your colder climate? Ie more about how you planted them etc?

    • @togetherweharvest

      Yes.
      1. We started the slips really early, in March I believe, in order to have them ready by early June - they take a long time to grow to transplant size. In warmer locations, you can start the slips earlier or later than this with the longer growing season.
      2. We put them in a raised bed that gets the most sun of all our crops.
      3. The raised bed has a dark color so it kept the soil warmer during the early and later days, if the sun was out.
      4. Being in a raised bed period, means the soil warms up faster.
      5. Since they need a long time to grow, we were prepared to cover them during the nights if the temps were to ever drop to a threatening temperature. Luckily we didn't need to do that.

    I love your mission brother. It’s the same for me. Do you plan to test Electroculture in your garden this year?
    I also left the rat race in USA and live simply now in Nicaragua.
    Working on getting my garden built out beyond my grow bags. I really appreciate your energy and knowledge sharing.

      Nicaragua?!?!?! - That's cool. My wife is from there!!

      What part of Nicaragua are you living in?

    I live in mid coast maine, zone 5b, and am planning on growing sweets this year, it is recommended to cover with plastic ☹️which is opposite of my philosophy. I hope to get a good harvest growing them on a trellis, and on black landscape fabric.

    • @togetherweharvest

      Cover the plants with plastic? I've never heard of this.
      Why are you using landscape fabric?

  • @Bigpinehealingfarm

    I thought it might add the warmth that they need. But I see you did great with mulch… I think we have a long enough growing season, we get our first frost here in Mid October.

    • @togetherweharvest

      We get our first frost in September.
      I actually made a minor mistake with the mulch. I should have waiting 2-3 weeks after planting the slips before adding the mulch. This gets the soil really warm, which the slips like.

    • @Bigpinehealingfarm

      Why wouldn’t you add mulch right after planting?

    • @togetherweharvest

      Because the slips will grow better in warm soil. Without mulch, the soil heats up. Once the slips are established and growing properly (2-3 weeks after planting), I'll then add the mulch. This is the only crop I do this with.

    Congratulations on the harvest! Happy for you and proud of you for giving it a try. It's a great feeling to be able to provide a portion of your food for your family. Do you have a basement/cellar for storage? We are in zone 6B (KY) and fall is definitely here and from what I hear/read it sounds like it could be a rough winter for a lot of people across the country. Blessings on your family as you prepare for winter.

    • @togetherweharvest

      Well said! Hopefully the winter isn't too bad - hard to tell right now.
      We have an unfinished basement. It's a good setup for storing food because we don't heat the basement so the temp is between 45-55 degrees.
      I love KY. We visited the arc encounter and creation museum down there a couple years ago.
      Thank you for watching!

    Thanks for this video!!!! I would try and save the smalls for starting your slips in March??? When do you start your slips? How long do they store? NICE NICE harvest. Great to follow a fellow Wisconsinite.

    • @togetherweharvest

      You're welcome!
      The problem with smaller sweet potatoes is that they won't store as along as the large ones.
      I start my slips 10 weeks before June. It's a slow, slow beginning and then all of a sudden the slips grow light crazy - especially under grow lights once they sprout.

  • @movingforward2570

    I need you help asap. I planted some sweet potatoes in a grow bad and the weather got cold the other day and the leave wither. Can I cut off the leaves so the potatoes can comtinue growing. I am in Gwinnett county Ga and pit it in my plastice green house?

    • @togetherweharvest

      Usually ones the leaves go bad, the plant dies. At least with crops sensitive to cold weather.
      If you cut the vines and leaves, the sweet potatoes will stop growing. They get their energy from the leaves.
