I love the Nor Cal Ren Fair I hope to go next week , they are always so kind to my son who has Autism . I have never laughed any where more than the fair one day I would love to have tea with the queen !
I was a solo stage performer at the Northern & Southern Cal. Ren Faires and the Dickens Christmas Fairs from 1970-73. What started out fun didn't stay that way. Glad some folks still enjoy it. It did give me an opportunity to sing obscure traditional ballads, which I had been collecting from age 5. We didn't have archery of jousting. Mostly it existed to sell stuff. Some of the sales were very lovely things plus a lot of schlock.
As a Nor Ren Faire participant -leather craft booth - from year one , China Camp 1968 - and eight years doing the show at Black Point forest this video breaks my heart. The present appears to be a weak half hearted imitation of the original idea. What I saw in the background was cheap, minimal efforts at booth and stage decorations & installations, plywood and canvas every where, and my god, the final insult industrial nylon sun cover instead of patch work burlap. There is no serendipity, no spirit, of what it was and could be. My last visit to the Faire was in 1993 and all I can do now is reminisce, look at my countless photos which I share on two FB norcalren groups. I have participated in and have attended Ren faire imitators in the mid west that do a much better interpretation of this idea.

I worked the faires those years too - Ron and Phyllis Patterson were so good at keeping it strictly Elizabethan England. So commercial now it’s sad

I’m surprised there are so few trees and it’s so open…I guess I expected something more wooded. Looks just like what we have down here in so cal.
