Just over a year ago, south coast forests were devastated by fire. The scale and intensity of the fires across NSW was immense and the impacts of the bushfires on biodiversity is still unfolding. Even before these fires took hold, what was happening in the south-east forests of NSW was appalling. Heavily subsidised forestry operations in public native forest still operated, producing wood chips for export.
Today, while the flora and fauna are still recovering, forestry operations have resumed, despite EPA advice that the forests need time to recover, and plans are afoot to rebuild the Eden Chip Mill.
Guest speakers Professor David Lindenmayer, Brad Smith (Nature Conservation Council), Joslyn van der Moolen (Canberra Forest Alliance) and Harriett Swift (South East Region Conservation Alliance) unpacked the impact of these fires on south-east forests, how the logging industry has ramped up again, and how Canberrans can get involved to protect these beautiful places and the biodiversity that relies on them.
