It's crazy to think I've been watching your video through my teenage years and now into adulthood- it's like a teacher that helps you out even if you're not in their class anymore? idk but keep it up Alphonso !!
I have learned more about drawing in 1 week with Alphonso Dunn than I have with any other TH-camr in a year. I love his tutorials. Especially those that go in detail with a single subject like hair, noses, mouth etc. Love love love it! 💗
I'm glad I've found this series. It's just perfect to give me the guidance to get into more urban sketching. I usually take lots of photos in the city where I live, Madrid, so I'll probably start by drawing and painting some of my favourite street scenes I'll have to be careful with the photos I take too, as I found out the hard way when I tried to get perspective right from a photo taken in wide angle. It ended up looking like something from the film Inception.
First I found Alphonsos channel - it was great! Then I bought the book and began to read and practice one page after another - it is super great! Now I realized that the videos are the perfect supplementary material when working with the book - it is amazing! Thanks Alphonso ❤️
Thank you so much for your work. Without you I wouldn't be able to draw anything in this style that at least tolerable. I can not phrase how thankfull I am. I still have to practise a lot and learn anatomy but I understand what should I do and I'm getting closer to decent everyday a bit. If the only option was learning pencil drawing, water painting, digital art, creating would be a less enjoyable experience and it wouldn't be as dominant part of my life. So really without any overdramatization it is life changing. Also you are the only tutorialist who has a structure and not teaching exactly his own way of doing everything you just tell why you are doing what you do and with the same principles other approach can work as well. Thank you so much.
I’m so grateful to have found you! I’ve been looking for a teaching. I like how detail your lessons are, from explaining the type of materials to use and why. And your lessons inspire and motivate me to practice more. I’m excited to learn to from you. Thank you.
I always keep a pocket sized sketchbook with me and sketch people and things in the train and when I have waiting times. It can be really fun and really frustrating. I am looking forwards to more of this series!
Hi Alphonso, as far as teaching is concerned you are the best! You know how to explain clearly and encourage students when so many fail to do so. I just bought your book and I think every student who can should do so. Thank you so much for sharing and for the smile we often guess when you speak
same here. i was so delighted to see the skol label on the beer bottle in the photo reference he used as example! made me wonder if it was actually his own picture and try to guess where was he. i'd say pelourinho, salvador, bahia. nice travel choice!
Thank you for the clear,Non Booming Audio. Most folks don't realize that that solid flat wall behinding the is creating the Echo that's really loosing them viewers. There is nothing worse. Thank you for caring that your Audio is Clear!
His books are really amazing ! Geniusly Simple and intuitive. I've been struggling to find a book that would combine everything and would provide a simplistic approach to sketching and drawing and here it is.
WOW...It's so good to see you again...I used to watch your videos and I bought your Pen & Ink Drawing book. Even though I'm not a beginner, I found it very helpful as a review and also it provided good exercises for those elements of drawing I had a tendency to skip over....
This was great timing for another great video. I'm about to take a trip to South Korea and want to try doing more spontaneous sketches and start practicing landscapes.
interesting who similar the process of drawing/painting and playing/learning a music instrument. The accuracy, the quality of the movements decides over the result.
Sensei, so glad to see you are making videos again. Your knowledge share is priceless. Your books stay on my art table and are used for my art classes. Thank you for the blessing.
Dude. When u drew the ink only u blew my mind it was soooo good. PS: Bought yo book its awesome. Been following you for 6 years and u always amaze me. Keep writing books ill buy them all.
You’ve done a master piece !! This video shows us a lot of technique and they are useful for us!! I hope me painting skills could get better ! And we too! Thanks for sharing!
Omg , I just discover your channel and I loooooove it . the way you explain is very simple. I 'm new at this and I am sure Iwill learn a lot with you , you are BRILLIANT
nice vid! your advice is so soothing. knew you from another video. at that time, i was so anxious about my skill but your words reduce the anxiety. i trust you ever since that.
A fantastic introduction to urban sketching. I’m just beginning but learned loads from your laid back, but skilled video. Also find the time lapse video very relaxing.
I notice that for horizontal lines, you mainly pull from left to right, and for vertical lines, you mainly pull from top to bottom. As a lefty, I am used to writing or printing by pushing the pencil from left to right. I am not used at all to pulling the pencil towards me. But pushing makes for badly jagged lines. I'm going to practice pulling the pencil towards the left for horizontal lines and see how that does.
Hey I am not sure if you made mention in this thread of posts or not, but maybe you can post again as to the kind of 3-edged (triangular) shaped straight edge you show in this post. Can't seem to find one googling. Thanks so much. Your posts are excellent. I plan to get your books. Merry Christmas!
I ALWAYS have a pad of paper in my pocket and a pencil and I wear pencil sharpener necklace it is my favorite one and I don't want it to get damaged in my pocket by change or keys
That is dedication my friend. I am working up to regular sketching and currently have my supplies contained to a med sized pencil bag and a sketchbook. I am still figuring out my travel watercolor kit so for now it is wc pencils ink pens/brush pen and a mechanical pencil
@@ciannacoleman5125 you have no idea lol but I draw a lot of cartoons and lately I've been working on background and furniture and stuff also whenever I rarely do paint in watercolor I use a custom basic 4 color pocket palette I made and I use a pentel water brush
im late to the game , but your workbook was so helpful i had to get the first one. it just came today.. thanks . when the student is ready the teacher will appear.. tag your it. teach.. yes i do know your a cemastry teacher to. thanks.. you got more students than you know about.. .. found your life calling?
You have given a lot of great tips. I would strongly encourage new artist to buy arches watercolor paper and not Strathmore. There is no comparison between the two and you can get frustrated using poor quality paper like Strathmore. You can usually find a coupon on line for Michael’s and get it half-price. (if you are a highly skilled watercolor artist you can work on Strathmore and deal with its imperfections but as a new artist don’t make it more difficult for yourself and use Arches watercolor paper.)
The master is back! I was scared that you would stop making videos, I’ve learned so much from them and your book 😆
5 minutes in and I know I’m going to watch the rest. Your passion is addictive. Thank you!
🙂🙂
I just started watching your videos and I am just gonna say I’m gonna watch a lot of them
🙂
I've got so So SO many help from your tutorials from classic smokes to sharp textures to wonderful scenarios!

I love the idea of the dots. That’s brilliant! Thanks so much Alphonso! Happy New Year to you!
I agree. What a fantastic way to estimate placement of final lines. Now I may dare to sketch in ink instead of pencil.
You are a true master of your craft. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
I’m a person who likes to talk with my hands a lot so it was very fun to just see your hands talking too. Many thanks.
So useful. Nice to see you back. Love the 'dot' advice. Perfect.
