  • In this video i show you my design of a simple Birkeland-Eyde reactor i made 5 years ago. Have you ever built one yourself?

in my testing i found using a metal tube as a center electric then placing the second electrode as a solid wire looped in a J shape so that the hook end pointed at the tube allowed an arc to form right in the path of the air, and the more air you put in the hotter the arc has to run, but i got far better results than the typical jacobs ladder kind of setup everyone else does. the ideal setup would use magnets to make plasma disc but unfortunately that requires a large arc first so the birkeland would also have to consume much power and produce more acid

I searched my old videos and found the Birkeland-Eyde reactor I made in 2021. I uploaded a Short with the videos.

Instead of pushing the air through, would it make sense to suck it through instead by connecting a little vacuum pump on the outlet of the bubbler? That way, even if the setup isn't completely airtight, all the product would get sucked through the bubbler and not leak out anywhere.

I have tried both, but usually, the vacuum pump gets damaged even from the small amount of NOx and water vapor that comes out of the bubbler

You need more power. Oil burner ignition transformers are good for this.

This is definitely a low power system. Back then, i just used what was available. Maybe someday, i will build a true large-scale production setup.

Have you tried absorbing with a little peroxide to make sure all the NO gets absorbed?

Great idea, i used it when titrating the efficiency, but for production, it usually is sufficient to have enough fresh air being pushed through.

isn’t it better to make it from ammonia and air and whit a platinum catalyst. I saw your last video before this and was thinking that was the case you’re gonna make some nitric acid with it?

Thats another way of course, but both are not suitable for creating any real amounts of acid. It's easier and a lot faster to look where you can get some nitrate salts from and react them with H2SO4 or if you cant't get any, with NaHSO4.

Some day i will try using the catalyst for ostwald, but for now i need it for a different project.

@@chemical-engineering-yt but h2so4 is a exotic chemical and getting harder to get hold on! Long time ago the forbidden thet iteme over disk here in sweden! Now they are banning NaOH because many get chemical burn for it.. that’s why i bay 21kg of it!
Im wery interesting about the ostwalds reaction and will looking forward to see a video about it in the future when you get time!🙌🏻
      Stay safe!

@@KulKlas Like he said you can also use NaHSO4. H2SO4 under 15% is not banned

Have you tried using packings or objects like raschig rings to improve the gas liquid contact surface?

Really great idea, but for me the absorption in the water never was a limiting factor
