    Actual playing starts around @17:38 -- I talk a lot...
    ADDENDUM!
    I was trying to recall what the sequencer / trig buttons felt like, and my memory kept going back to something in the 90's that I just couldn't recall, and for good reason! They feel a lot like a television Remote Control (and I haven't touched one of those in YEARS!). Kinda squishy, but solidish. You definitely don't need to jam on them (maybe after a million presses, who knows...) but that is entirely what they feel like (think the number pads). Was driving me nuts trying to recall the sensation!

    I just bought one for $280 and financially it was not the best move but I am thinking about selling my Akai MPC Live 2 which I love, for this. It has not arrived yet but it is "checking all the boxes" for me. I don't have to worry about it getting stolen because it is not expensive and it does the things I need. I was looking at running it thru a strymon deco to get stereo. I thought I needed stereo sampling but it would be better with a expression pedal set to pan. I disagree with the moog and buchala but Pittsburg Modular is rad!... and not overpriced. I can sample my vst collection, I love the digital sound, but I have a tube amp too. Sample start and end, pitch and a sequencer! That is all I wanted my Roland SP 202 to be. I bought the Live two to make drums and I mostly use it as a synth. It is amazing for that and the speaker is the best feature I didn't know I wanted but I can add a monitoring speaker to this too. When it comes I will plug this into my old Xtortion and DOD Echo FX and its gonna get crazy.

      @@electromajick Pittsburgh Modular is such a great company, and always cool to talk to about stuff! Some of Richards design schemas are a bit quirky, but its like working with a mad scientists lab equipment at times! I usually fast forward through opinions and philosophies when it comes to synth reviews. I don’t care or think that they’re any wiser than my barber or my 4 year old granddaughter. ***BUT*** I listened to every word you said and it was so refreshing. Heck, I subscribed!
    I actually have the Model Cycles from Elektron and it is crazy fun. This is next on my list. Excellent pieces of gear that are as much “Pro” as my $1300 plastic Roland keyboard. The enjoyment I find in this is like when I got my first Transistor AM radio in 1966. That $10 piece of gear launched me into a world filled with The Beatles, James Brown, Hendrix.
    What a great starter for musicians. IT’S $300 ..I spend that on groceries every 2 weeks
    Thank You!!!

    • @boedye
      @boedye  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! And sorry it's taken me so long to reply (youtube doesn't always tell me what's happening)! What inspired this video was that I had watched this instagram person going on how it wasn't "pro gear", and you know... it really bothered me. I've seen "pro" musicians use a broomstick, some clothesline and a bucket, and actually make money touring with their "pro gear". It's such a nonsensical term. I've also read people saying that they only buy expensive gear because it sets them apart somehow. The reason I don't have the Model:Samples anymore is simply because over time I prefered the Electribe! Another "not pro gear" item (even though I believe Orbital used an Electribe early on). I once read a comment from Steve Vai that one of the nicest guitars he ever played was a Mexican made Fender (and this is while he was well into his contract with Ibanez!). This isn't mean to discredit high end audio production work, such as what Richard Devine, or Joel Zimmerman, or even Richard D. James do (But even Richard and James will use obscure stuff just for the fun of it!). Thanks for the sub, and the kind accolade!

    This was a really great video, Thank you for showing how you built your beat. Many videos have hours behind the scenes of people programming their devices to sound perfect. then their video is just them hitting play and wiggling knobs for no perceptible reason. However, I can tell you this: As far as machines go, it was an enjoyable one for certain! Now would I buy one again, if I had to choose between it, and a Model:Cycles? I'd probably go with the Cycles if only because it's a bit more flexible! The DM:I really is bare bones, but it's also VERY cost effective. Hand down, do NOT buy the original Drumbrute -- there is nothing "brute" about it, and you have to add a lot of external effects in the signal chain to get it to sound great. They are both intuitive machines, but the Impact is a solid machine that just sounds great!

So said person went on this long winded rant about how Elektron lied, and I'm reading all all this as I'm waiting to get mine in the mail. I haven't had much time to play lately, and sadly it's just sitting on my desk ATM, but it's a fun jam for certain!

      Agreed! It actually nudged me in a direction for appreciating samples more. I don't use it often, but I like just having it around to play about with. Plus, you can find a TON of free sample packs to just toss on there. My only real gripe is the lack of battery power. It really should have had a slow or an internal battery pack ala the OP1 / OPZ. Would have made it perfect.

    • @fernandomercado2711
      @fernandomercado2711 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boedye I'm glad it did. Sampling is basically the first wave of electronic music. Delia Derbyshire, etc.
      About the power: It takes 5v, so it probably lasts a long time with a powerbank.
      I think about it like what I think about with the Digitone. I can compose on it and if I twist a knob it turns whatever I do into something really different just because of how FM behaves. It's Happy accident land.
      In a way, all Elektrons reminds me of a souped-up Gameboy. They're basically LSDJ with a sequencer interface. Nerdseq with the launchpad and more knobs :D

    • @boedye
      @boedye  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fernandomercado2711 Actually, if memory serves the developer for LSDJ actually works or worked for Teenage Engineering. I believe he developed their sequencer, or something to that effect! Yes, I too like the "everything upfront" scheme. I want to have fun while playing, not menu dive and read manuals. It's also too, why I got the Akai Force -- SO much more intuitive and in front of you. Yes, there is a 100 page manual, but even without it, you can still get the general idea of what's going on just by looking at it. IMHO if I have to read more than 20 pages of a manual just to make the damn thing work, it's probably too much for me to actually enjoy, regardless. Sure I have some stuff that breaks that rule, but for the most part everything I own can be summed up in that amount of paper work.

      Check-a-Bitch Beats To be sure, Elektron are not know for simplicity, and their machines tend to have a bit of a steep learning curve. That being said, this guy has a significantly less curve, comparitively. As a general rule, everything really is laid out in front, and as far as things go, if you dont overthink it, it is a standard, barebones drum machine.
      Select T1-6, and then sequence where you want it to trigger with buttons 1-16. Everything up front works with whatever track you have selected. The oscillator samples are basically granular, 1 cycle shots, drums are nice and organized, and yea... thats about it!
