    This was probably the most insane and cleanest engine swap Ever! Mikey and Tim.... You guys are awesome! This was definitely worth watching! Not something I would even attempt! Due mainly to cost and crazy; level 11, on this one! Thank you all involved in this project! 👍

    WOW! Lots of great work here. V8 swap looks like it was a factory option. Camera work and narrating showed lots of informative stuff. Video editing nicely wrapped up what I'm sure was hours of footage. Now let's see that thing rip down the highway/trail!

    Great video of Mikey's 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 engine swap. After watching this video, buying the donor vehicle, the amount of research, fabrication, customization of everything, and the actual cost, I have total respect for Mikey's abilities & skills to put it all together. Definitely not a weekend project for someone of limited mechanical abilities.

    Nicely done. This is definitely an easier and more affordable undertaking for those of us who live in free states. Nicely done. I definitely appreciate the adherence to keeping things as “factory” as possible. The exhaust wasn’t a concern for me because we don’t have to pass emissions tests. My only concerns were the tone and NOT throwing an emissions related code. I definitely didn’t want the factory sound but I didn’t want it to be obnoxious either. Dual borlas and custom 3.25” stainless plumbing makes for a beautiful growl. Thanks for the 1st rate Yota content. It’s very helpful!

    I feel you on the Pep Boys hesitation. I learned the hard way to never trust them when I had them install a new distributor cap on my 89 Prelude 2.0 SI (with 4 wheel steering). I did most of the work myself on that thing but didn't feel like renting the timing gun and learning how to do that. Thanks for the kind words. Mikey would be very happy to read your comment. Amazingly enough though, not too long after doing this involved swap, Mikey and his wife decided they wanted to purchase an Airstream trailer. Since the 4runner, even with the V8, would have been majorly exceeding the towing limits, he gave this beautiful 4runner to his brother and bought a Yukon Denali to pull his trailer. He didn't have the room at his house for the 4runner so he gave it away. I'd say Mikey is a very nice brother. So unfortunately, we won't be seeing his V8 Swapped 4runner again. Mikey loves vehicle projects though so maybe we'll find ourselves documenting another one of his in the future. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Happy Wrenching!

    I know Mikey transplanted several of the sequoia parts onto the 4runner, and that the oil pan clears the frame. Was that the particular reason why the sequoia 4x4 was selected as the donor vehicle as opposed to a 2wd sequoia or another vehicle? Thanks and love your videos!

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know why Mikey selected the Sequoia other than the fact that he was able to buy the whole vehicle relatively cheap through the Copart Auto Auction. The Sequoia was wrecked bad in a crash, but the drivetrain was in good shape.

      Hey Thomas, I think a shop would charge bookoo bucks to do this swap for you. It's a ton of work. Mikey did a lot of the research for the wiring harness and built it himself which alone was a ton of time. He estimated he spent 12k on this swap. I think a shop doing 100% of the work would charge you even more. But, I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask what a shop what they would charge. It would have to be a shop that specializes in this sort of thing because you're average shop wouldn't take on a project like this.

    Hey Tim I recently have done a subframe swap on my 4th generation 4Runner V8 and I got lucky and found a frame that looks almost brand new for $275.00 and I've never done anything close to this yet I took a stab at it and granted it's been 3 months and I'm so close to being done. I found out that the frame is from a 4x4 V6 and mine is a 4x4 V8 and the only difference i have found is that the cross member bar for the transmission had to be cut out and welded back on 4 inches back. I didn't have to move the motor mounts at all they are in the same place but they are different types on how they bolt down it's almost like the mounts won't rest flush inside the frame mount because the angle is different. Now is there a different motor mount that I can get to bolt to the motor bracket for the motor mount because even if I get the V6 mounts and bolt them to the V8 engine bracket it still won't set flush because of the angle of the bracket is different than the V6. Am I right? Or am I missing something? Do they make a conversation mount and or bracket for this situation?

      @TimmyTheToolman Tim I apologize for not asking the right question because I have faith and believe you can help me because if not then I'm up you know what creek without a paddle or my rig lol. I think I just asked it the wrong way. Ok the V8 engine mounts and the perch that they sit in and bolt to come together at a perch that is level to the ground to where the perch on the V6 frame is angled like 3inches down on the engine side so when you drop the V8 engine into the V6 perch, the V8 mounts are expecting to be level (so to speak) not continue/made downward into an angle it's not made for. So would you by any chance know any custom Toyota makers that could do this or know about this now you can point me in the right direction because I've been through hours of video and can't find anything to the point where I can't think straight anymore lol. Thank you for your time and help!

      @TimmyTheToolman yes sir I remember through the hours of video I went through that the guy you did the engine swap with talked about the amount of time it took to find the right parts that had to be customized (don't quote me on that). I believed that he said he found someone but I'm not sure if he mentioned it or if he wants to. I've taken up enough of your time and I appreciate you and how much your videos have helped me and in a weird way hopefully my questions gives you the quickest route to solving a frame swap if you ever end up doing one. I'm going to fab some solid steel brackets and see how it works. Would love to share some pictures of my frame swap project that would have my fellow rednecks saying I didn't know I could do that or possible. I pulled off a miracle with 2 jacks 4 jack stands and wood from the home Depot cart. Maybe you will get a good laugh out of it at least. I'm not sure if you remember talking with me (email) years back but I'm the guy from BINGHAMTON, NY that has the 4th generation 4Runner that made the ceiling into a ceiling that lowers down and pulls out like a dining room table would for the leaf but in this case the leaf so to speak is already there just slid on top of the rest and a blow up air mattress custom made to fit the with of the rig and 6ft long. It slept two people comfortably and I had a projector in the hood scoop and insulated from the engine that had a fire stick and connected to my Bluetooth. I did that because the girl I absolutely wanted to date said that I had to impress her on the first date and it's not all about the money. So I did the install and picked her up and drove 45 min away to a drive in movie theater that's been closed for years and she knew that as well and asked what we were doing there and I told her we were going to watch the movie she always wanted to see and she said you do realize this place is closed and I said I know for close your eyes I'm going to surprise you. Well I'm married to that woman to this day. You don't need to respond I just thought you might appreciate that story because we all have our one story that involves our 4runners.

I would figure out a way you can adapt a current engine mount for sale to work with your application. I have a very serious interest in doing this. I have a 94 ex-cab 4x4 with the 3.slo and while most people do the 5VZ swap which is much easier, I think I want more power for towing. I've already purchased a 2-inch body lift from 4Crawler which I'm about to do and will then be installing a long travel kit and am swapping the rear axle to a 2002 Tundra to match the extended width of the front LT kit. I'm moving to Washington state in ~ 2 or 3 years and the goal is to pull my trailer back and a forth at least twice to move my small shop. I also weld MIG/TIG and fabricate and do various CAD/CNC work so I know I could tackle this and do most everything myself labor wise.
    I did the R150F clutch last year in my driveway. I've worked on cars since I was 15. I feel if I'm going to go through the trouble of a swap, I might as well go the extra distance to really have what I want, and being able to tow around 4,000-5,000lbs much more easily is really what I'm after. I've toyed with just buying a Tundra but I hate automatics and also hate the bulbous looks of the early 2000 models. I'd rather stick with a lighter, more compact 5-speed manual truck with a beefy engine upgrade.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jeff, sounds like you have the skill set and motivation to pull off the swap. Good luck if you decide to do it. One day I'd like to learn to weld but I sort of doubt I'll ever be an accomplished fabricator. Happy Wrenching!

    • @oldowl4290
      @oldowl4290 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TimmyTheToolman Thanks, it looks like the 4.0UZ is a lot easier to pull off with a manual transmission and transfer case. Since the 2UZ was all automatics only it seems near impossible to mate the two. There are a few leads on an adapter plate but from what I can tell it also comes down to emissions issues since again, no manuals exist for that engine and thus no ECU for manual. Therefore I may have to scrap the idea or go with the 4.0L UZ or an OM617Mercedess diesel swap which a guy has well documented on here on TH-cam.

      What kind of issues have you had with it? I wouldn't do the 2UZ swap unless I could do it all myself and didn't need to pay for help doing it. It's a ton of work and it's also fairly expensive depending on how much you spend on everything to make it happen. The 3.4 Liter V6 is a great engine. They are known to go into the 400k miles and beyond. If you have some type of major failure, you have options to get it back on the road. You could put in a used engine or you could drop in a rebuilt and we have a 4 part video series to help you do it. As long as you take care of that motor, you might have hundreds of thousands of trouble-free miles left in it. My 2000 4runner has over 200k on it and I wouldn't have any problem driving it cross-country. Just do the regular maintenance and drive the shit out of it.

      @@Sean20Gaming Yeah, I was a little blown away Mikey gave his truck to his brother shortly after we filmed it, but if you know Mikey, it sort of makes sense. For one, Mikey is a super generous guy. Secondly, he's a project guy. As soon as he was done with this one, he was already working on something else. His motivation is the challenge of pulling off a project. He succeeded with this one and it was on to the next.

    Very nice! My mom has the same engine in her sequoia. Has 350,000 miles on it and still runs great with no engine work. She wants to get rid of it cause shes scared it will break down someday but I want her to push 400,000 miles 😂😂.

      Yep, the 2UZ motors are known to go over 500k no problem. Tell your mom not to worry and keep driving it.

      Extremely similar to a 1st gen tacoma. Practically identical for most aspects.

      Wouldn't we all. It's just the time and money that scares most of us from tackling a job of this magnitude.

      Timmy The Toolman hey Tim I was wondering do you think the 4.7 is more reliable than the 3.4? I know they are both pretty reliable but wanted your opinion.

    What are the overall dimensions of the 2uz-fe? It's overall footprint dimensions are impossible to find online...

      @TimmyTheToolman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We don't know either Ben. We were just the people documenting this job. I doubt even Mikey knows the dimensions of the engine. Maybe somebody on a Toyota forum could answer this question for you.

    Damn you shoulda got one from an 05! They had Variable valve timing and made 275 rather than 240 hp. Really cool tho!!

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The variable valve timing would have been nice. Mikey realized this but he got a good deal on the Sequoia he pulled the engine from so he couldn't pass up on the deal..

    Would a TRD supercharger get the same gains in torque and horsepower?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, a Supercharger wouldn't match the torque and horsepower of the 2UZ engine.

      We give you the part number so you can look it up online but they’re pretty rare so doubt you’ll find any. Best bet is to contact Magnuson for supercharger parts

    does cruise control work?

    • @Mikey-zo2yt
      @Mikey-zo2yt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup, cruise works great! The ‘02 4Runner uses the same wiring setup as the Sequoia so it’s just a matter of connecting the corresponding wires in the E5 plug. Earlier 3rd gen 4Runners used a different cruise control switch so it will be more difficult.

  • @DonCool75

    Can you just take all the harness out of sequoia and put in 4runner verse wiring to fit 4runner

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could but it would take a lot of customization to work with the 4runner. I think your idea would require even more work but I could be wrong.

    what is the cost of something like this and where could I get it done? What kind of shop? Anywhere in Vancouver WA could put a V8 in my 1st gen Tacoma?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mikey said he spent around 14k. If someone was able to do all the work themselves, the cost would go down by quite a bit. Mikey paid Wes for his time which added up due to all the custom fab work that was required. We do not know of any shop in your area that would be good to use for a job like this. You'll just have to do a search or maybe ask this question on a Toyota forum and see if anyone has some suggestions for you. Good luck.

    Dear Tim. I recently watched your engine swap video. It is fantastic. I have a 99 4runner V6 4WD Automatic that needs a new frame. Do you know if the 2WD frame is the same as the 4WD frame.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a feeling it is but I don't know for sure. If I were you, I'd ask your question on the forum T4R.org in the 3rd Gen section. There's a lot of knowledgeable people on there and some of them have done frame swaps. There is one guy, screen name "TheDurk" that has done a frame swap. He would be a good person to ask. If you're not already a member, join the forum and maybe personal message him. I bet he'll know the answer.

    • @DTxOctavariumx
      @DTxOctavariumx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only thing that is different is the transmission mount locations. There’s a company that makes a 4wd swap cross frame for 2wd frames. Look up 3rd gen 4runner 4wd conversion.

      customtacobuilds of wv Yes, 1st Gen Tacomas are very similar to 3rd Gen 4runners. The drivetrains are exact. I Just don't know if all the wiring would be the same.
