I grew up believing that braids were pigtails because they were 'curly' and when it's hanging straight down without a braid, it's a pony tail...because it looks like the tail of a pony. BUT according to what I saw online, if it's one at the back it's a pony tail (whether it's braided or not) and if there are two or more they are pigtails.
