The Lisbon Regicide or Regicide of 1908 was the assassination of King Carlos I of Portugal and the Algarves and his heir-apparent, Luís Filipe, Prince Royal of Portugal, by assassins sympathetic to Republican interests and aided by elements within the Portuguese Carbonária, disenchanted politicians and anti-monarchists.The events occurred on 1st February 1908 at the Praça do Comércio along the banks of the Tagus River in Lisbon, commonly referred to by its former name Terreiro do Paço. No café Gelo, simpatizantes republicanos e da Carbonária reunem-se e ouvem cantar um fado no qual o rei é fortemente criticado e ridicularizado.O rei diz a que se o rotativismo politico não resultar , fará com que João Franco seja primeiro ministro.
In "Gelo" café some republican supporters and supporters of the underground movement Carbonária meet and listen to a fado that criticizes and ridicularizes the king.The king tells one of his counsellors that if the two main parties don´t solve the current crisis, he will appoint the politician João Franco to prime minister.

Presidente do Conselho / Primeiro Ministro na altura do Regicídio. tinha sido nomeado alguns anos antes tendo solicitado ao rei que dissolvesse o parlamento.Governou com muita dureza provocando um descontentamento generalizado.
