I never messed with Lost back in the day, I have recently decided I like it - but I remember Daniel from "Star Trek: Enterprise" - and he sounds more regular-ass American than I do lol ... completely different than a Lost Korean Who Can't Speak English And Is Stuck On An Island lol.
He was in Star Trek: Enterprise as a "MAKO" - basically a Starfleet Navy SEAL - and he spoke English better than I do with less of an accent than me, and I'm 101% Yank lol...
She can speak English! My research of her after watching Miss Ma Goddess of Revenge lead me here. Now I really wanna watch Lost just because of her. Her voice is just so soothing when she says certain words especially in Korean. I like that.
I saw Daniel Day Kim on 24 and he comes up and he speaks English like a pro and all I'd seen him on was Lost, where he couldn't speak it at all. Guess I missed Hurley's dream. I was like wot. Like I knew he must have been able to speak English to do Lost to begin with, but it didnt sink in til that moment.
@@RLee-oz6gl no.. you are wrong,, Daniel Dae Kim was born in Korea and moved to the US as a baby being raised in Pennsylvania. He does not speak Korean well at all. In fact he had to learn a lot of korean for Lost and his accent is horrible. A native korean speaker would know instantly he was not a native korean speaker.
They do have full korean names- Sunhwa and Jinsoo. They're referred to as Sun and Jin because it's easier for english speakers. What I'm annoyed at is that Sun took on Jin's last name when they were married.
@@blue3374 Interesting. I'm sure they brought that up during production, but I guess the showrunners felt that it would be too confusing for American (non-Korean) audiences to understand that difference.
@Brandon you mean their child take father’s last name;).. not wife.. wife take HER father’s last name in family traditionally... you must’ve been confused. Well, tradition sucks anyway.

I am English (in London) but even I realize that Korea is a very distinct culture and a homogenous race of people in a small peninsular territory. I have spent 12 years in Asia and I am always interested in anything about China and Japan. But I only visited Korea recently - it's a lovely country with admirable people. So different from the Chinese! So different from the Japanese! Courteous, strong, sincere, genuine. Koreans are NOT some kind of "sub-category" of East Asians. Crazy idea.
@dandesade She isn't struggling! She is pausing when trying to think of examples of her input. Her English is perfectly native and fluent, the only trace of accent can be heard sometimes in the way she pronounces "s" (also, devoicing where it should be a "z" at the end of a word), but if she wasn't Korean, this would be considered a lisp. I've listened to many interviews with her speaking English, and it's perfectly natively fluent throughout.
Yunjin was the best lady on the show bro. When she handed the book with little boat translations to Jin I got tears in my eyes. My girl was crying beside me but I was acting tough as hell lmao.

But I agree with what you are saying - take down those cultural borders and lose the old world politics. But I'd like to add that this can be done without having Asians lump themselves as a collective group.
MilkByCow lmao ripped in half by the US; maybe if the NK communist assholes weren’t such ignorant stupid shits in the first place our country wouldn’t have been split in half
I think the reason you've gotten 6 thumbs down sofar (none contributed by me), is because it sounds like you're saying it's okay to lump these unique and distinct groups (though admittedly, superficially similar) together. There is a lot of history and politics regarding inter-Asian relations, and to lump everyone together would be to downplay the significance of each culture.
@MilkByCow Hence, despite an attempted portrayal of Korean culture instead only succeeded in abbreviating the combined cultures of the Sinosphere with Korean faces at the forefront.
I think it's amazing how many Americans like to lump demographics together and oversimplify them (Christ - trying to explain the diversity of the UK, always gets frustrating when it's really just like a small USA with 4 states or provinces). And yet I think every non-American understands to try and lump the cultures of Texans and New Yorkers together would be quite mad.

@pokemonfan4ever11 In my opinion, Jin and Sun started out as a traditionally Confucian, my initial perception of Jin and Sun embodied the traditional Confucian values not unique to a specific nation in the Orient. Sure, they were Korean. But from what I saw, nothing they did was unique to Korea and not also present in Japan or China. Confucian values, Sun's father as a mob boss (a la Triads or Yakuza) stereotype, their home in Korea or the traditional temple where they wedded.
Hmm, I don't know. I felt that Jin and Sun's relationship played out like a cheesy korean soap opera. It was hard to take it seriously. I much prefer Desmond and Penny.
Wish there where more things korean on American tv. I loved Sun on lost

Yunjin Kim is so beautiful. :)
Real diversity with character development and a story for each individual without forcing something up like they do today.
If they actually had non-white people behind the scenes as writer and showrunners it wouldn't seem so forced and inauthentic
