  • What's up everyone! Here's a video on my 350,000 miles Mazda Protege5. It's a little long so I may shorten it on a different video.

Great vid, worth mentioning that these cars are so much easier to work on that the first Gen and newer mazda3 and imo they drive better.
As far as parts, don't forget you can still get most parts new from Mazda. Critical parts like sensors, cam and crank seals etc you can still get new. Last year I worked on over a dozen of these, I'm seeing more and more of these fail because of non OEM parts. Especially so with cam and crank seals, maf sensors, IAC valves, etc etc
Long story short, don't cheap out on maintenance and parts and these cars last. I've got a 260k mile engine with 40k miles being boosted in the last year or so. Consumes oil but I anticipated this when resealing and putting on a refreshed head.
    Great cars

I didn’t know Mazda was still selling parts for these cars.

I had a 2009 Mazda3 touring edition with only 40K miles I bought from original owner in November 2022. I liked it, but did not love it. I found a YELLOW P5 in Phoenix AZ in July of 2023. I sold the Mazda3. Needles to say, I LOVE my P5. I put over 3K in maintenance and its dead reliable. Talking about rare parts, I saw a listing for a stainless steel Mazda speed OEM rear muffler that fits the P5 on Facebook Market place in southern NM. Looking forward to your cabin filter video. Safe travels amigo.

I remember the P5 being highly accoladed right before it was replaced by the Mazda3. I could have bought a 2002 yellow P5 manual but I hesitated waiting for the Mazdaspeed and never bought either. Ended up with the 2004 Mazda3. That car was great but it was definitely missing something the P5 had.

The P5 is definitely different from the Mazda3.

My first car since the start of the bandemic, March 14th, 2020. Sure, it has issues; the paint is garbage, but motor is pretty responsive, if you put some money in the upkeep. Doing about 4k mile oil change intervals. Replaced the Cat, O2 sensors (make sure they are 'oe' sensors) Swapped suspension, EGR, TPS, MAF sensors, NGK Spark Plug Boots to avoid the fouling and misfiring... gap the plugs so it runs optimally, that'll save you a headache, run hella zipties.
Drives amazing now especially with the alignment and fixing a new power steering rack with the locking ring for the front sway bar...
My '02 doesn't have a cabin air filter from factory though 23:21
I had to replace my Alternator (19 Y.o. Hardware) engine-bay got much quieter.
But now the Voltage regulator is giving me issues, if you give the car the beans and rev out the engine closer to 5- 6.5K redline...
it sets the battery light off, and the voltage spike to 17v could easily cause some issues if you have a faulty Voltage Regulator or bad ground somewhere, it's located behind the glove compartment tucked behind a metal shield cover. My low beams went out. Had to get them replaced.
The brain (ECU/PCM) built by FORD. Built Ford tough, yeaaaa not so much bruh
sitting at 155K Miles atm, needs piston rings, and a new timing belt, oil smells like gasoline/petrol, but doesn't smoke out the exit pipe really.
    (I run 5w30 winter-time/10w30 summer-time)

Here are my favorite mods for these cars:
    -Leather interior swap
-Spare tire sub and/ or aftermarket spare tire sub setup
-Navifans brand 9inch headunit with wireless Apple CarPlay and android auto
-MSP turbo swap if not in a shit state for emissions. I prefer aftermarket SMIC if under 250hp, fmic adds lag and throttle response delay
-Good tint, I like 20% sides 40% front and rear

Oh also the optional OEM rubber cargo mat and compass mirror. That compass mirror is a great addition if you can find it

What are the options for an aftermarket rear spare tire sub? I had the chance to buy an OEM one for cheap at a junkyard a while back and passed on it because it seemed cheap and flimsy.

    • @WillJacksonNW
      @WillJacksonNW 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@benhogervorst the stock one is great, but if you don't have the plug for it at the body harness you should indeed go aftermarket. You can check if the plug is there by pulling the rear lower drivers side plastic cover by the rear seat back. Big white connector means it's plug and play.

Mine lasted OG engine and trans to 247k miles and the engine threw a rod, then about 300-400 miles after a full rebuild, the trans dumped out. It’s auto so I expected it. Will be back on the road next weekend after sitting with no 3/4 gear for just over a year

How'd you grease the sunroof rails? I've got a silver 03 Protege5 with 200k...love the darn thing to death but the sunroof struggles to open and makes squealing noises.
