One of the greatest songs ever written...and this is an older age performance of theirs...not quite as good as their younger days...but still amazing...and U2 is one of the biggest bands of all time...

As huge as U2 is, they're still incredibly underrated in my opinion. I'm 30 and the only reason any of my friends know Bono is from South Park. lol. It's tragic and I'm ashamed of my generations lack of appreciation for this kind of music.

The first time I heard One, I was sure I'd heard it a dozen times before. The very definition of an instant classic - it's perfectly formed and has a comforting familiarity that wraps and envelopes the listner, drawing them in and never letting go.

Well, the song is from their 1987 album, so your instincts are right. If you think Bono's vocals are great here, you should hear earlier versions of this song.
If you want to try more live U2, try something from their Zoo TV tour. The whole show was amazing. Or if you want something more current, the "intimate" live version of Every Breaking Wave.

You were spot on with everything you assessed. I wish you could do a review of their entire concert video ZOO TV LIVE FROM SYDNEY AUSTRALIA. That is a MONSTER of a concert from the early 90's. That tour broke records, the stage set up was state of the art for the time. It's absolutely AMAZING. You can find the entire concert on TH-cam. I'm 55. I remember exactly where I was when I heard this song the first time. I'd already seen U2 live- but this track gave me goosebumps. I saw the original Joshua Tree tour and 30 years later saw the anniversary tour with my adult kids.
U2 and Bono ( the lead singer ) are one of, if not the best, live shows you can see. Bono's voice isn't quite what it was in his younger days, but still fantastic.
I suggest the U2 Super Bowl half-time show or Bad at Live Aid.

100% I agree. Bono is/was a fantastic singer, but the BBC concert was absolutely not his day (also by other songs)
If you had version of the 80, 90 and 00 in your ears, this version pain.
The excellent atmosheric and spirtual music is killed, lose his unique effect.
I don't know if Bono had lost his original meaning or feelings to this masterpiece and his own lyrics perhaps discernible in the concert of the last 15 years??? Take versions of Rattle And Hum or Paris 1987, partly of the ZOO TV Tours.

@@christopherlyons4923 Beg your pardon: my school English is terrible. You said the right words.

In fact, I’d say this was his worst vocal performance ever. I saw them a handful of times and Bono’s vocals were atrocious during the 360 tour in 2010. He didn’t know many of his own lyrics and he practically spoke every song instead of singing them. When I saw them during their I+E tour, he was remarkably better. Everything they did at the BBC should have been rescheduled.

This is my favorite band of all time. I heard them at the age of 11 and there sound forever changed me, I’ve been loyal ever since.
Maybe because I’m Irish ☘️ idk 🤷‍♀️ Bono sang to my soul, and reached deep down into my gut, reached me like no other band still to this day.
They have a unique sound. With extremely powerful lyrics.
    Bono is a lyrical genius!!
And a powerful voice to boot.
    -Faraway so close
    -Second to say goodbye
    -God will send his Angels
    -Sunday Bloody Sunday
And One love dedicated to Martin Luther King the greatest man who ever lived. Who was taken from us. Bono recognized this and wrote a song about him.
Song 40 which is about a Phalsm 40 in the Bible.
He sings for the worlds pain and gives many victims a voice through his lyrics.
Sooo much more I could say about U2 but THANK YOU!
He sings from the ❤️ for that I’m forever grateful to them.
    I’m a Extremely LOYAL FAN to U2
Thank you 🙏 for giving them a chance!

All of your points are very much valid. The singer is Paul Hewson, better known as Bono. You might also be pleased with the original "Official" version which is has far less "production". My personal favorite is the live version from the concert film Rattle and Hum. Larry Mullen's drumming in that film is I think the best example of his work. All of these version are over 30 years old.

Also, from this album, ":Where There Streets Have No Name." Possibly their best song. Watch the original video, That is real footage. They played the song three times, and got the footage they needed.
U2 also played the Super Bowl halftime show in 2001 in New Orleans. I may be biased, because the Patriot Dynasty was born that night, but their performance of that song and tribute to those who died in 9/11 (this was the first Super Bowl afterwards) makes it my favorite halftime show.

I've seen U2 in concert over 200 times around the world. My number of times seeing them is low in comparison to others I know. However, I have spent my life traveling to see this band live because their live shows are where they truly are remarkable. Realize that Bono has sung With or Without you live hundreds of times. It was a staple in their setlists tour after tour after tour until not all that long ago. This was a performance FOR their fans. It wasn't a performance to gain MORE fans.
A couple of things I really do not understand though:
    1. Given your age, you cannot tell me that you have no idea who Bono is? On the ZooTV tour (1992) he called the White House every night, he's done songs with musicians from all musical backgrounds, and his charity work and charities themselves are a worldwide brand name. You cannot tell me that you have never heard his name mentioned anywhere before.
    2. Given the success of With or Without You and your age I cannot believe that you have never in your life heard this song in a restaurant or a store or on TV or on the radio before? Seriously? I mean, I couldn't sing a JayZ or Garth Brooks song to save my life, but I have at least heard of them and/or heard a song or two from them.

Their Zoo Tour concerts were fantastic, although this performance is not on the same par. At least one of their songs were movie themes: "In the Name of the Father (Thief of Your Heart"). Their catalog is vast and impressive.

U2 are a supergroup that has been around for a long time and Bono the lead singer is a superstar. By the way, they are Irish. You must check out their other work.

All I Want Is You/Where The Streets Have No Name, Super Bowl halftime performance after 9/11 (super emotional), Please, Exit, All Because Of You, Dirty Day, One Tree Hill, Running To Stand Still, Hawkmoon 269, The Fly, Walk On, Ordinary Love, Every Breaking Wave, could go on and on with great U2 songs. I agree with comments below to do live versions if possible as they are an epic live band.

So... great song but ... this is U2 4 decades into their career. You think his vocals are good here.. look up Live versions of this in the 80s or 90s or even the studio version. U2 are amazing... crazy amount of wonderful songs... they are amazing live but this was a very low key low energy version. Hey they are getting old at this point.. keep digging into U2 the worm hole is great.
