After detectives brought up John's name, Stephanie hit her arm on the table some 16 times in the span of just over a minute. And she refused to give up her DNA and then shortly after when the cops booked her, she had to lick her finger to remove her wedding ring so gave up her DNA on a silver platter anyway.

I have watched this so many times and i watch it like it was my first time. She knew the minute they mentioned John's name her past was coming back to haunt her.
I think she had a dread of this interview turning into the worst case scenario, but I don’t think she ever imagined that the hammer was *really * going to come down on her...until they mentioned the pesky DNA evidence. I think she started to realize that sh*t was getting real at that point. She had gotten away with this murder for soooo long. I think she thought it was all behind her and buried with Sherri.
I think even being there made her nervous, especially since she was invited to sit in the “suspect’s” chair. She immediately needed to reassure herself and said “You’re bringing somebody in, right?”
I bet Sherry wanted to live her life. But LAPD Sargent officer Stephanie Lazarus 30 years veteran shot her 3 times in the chest and face and made sure she was dead. Botched robbery. Sociopaths. Officer Lazarus almost got away with it
Cops: "How long did you guys date?" Stephanie: _"In the beginning....God created the universe...."_ jesus christ. she couldn't shut up about things they never asked her , but she's completely "clueless" on things we KNOW she KNOWS.
Same with Chris Watts, Ashley Mcarthur, both last interrogatory phases watched before. Priceless. And here, it's even better due to "cold case" manner..even if all this time should have been absolutely terrible to endure with questions on suspens for the family and relatives. But it's like vengeance out of death for Sherri Rasmussen. Seeing her disgusting of waste of life killer being caught like that. Some of divine justice from outer world. And the best thing is also she sits thinking about something cool/important maybe shared to her as person of interest in her qualification (art rhief pretext), like she's someone we can make part or center of things (just to reinsure his ego) and on seconds following, adressing her "his name has been mentionned in some case", not precising "old", but on their way to shut down her mind completely one one single sentence, asking "have you ever heard name of John Ruetten"? At THIS early starting moment, she knew she was already caught by her past. And just the minute following, seeing her started rambling and tumbling on herself, what delight. And best moment of all, around 2:38/2:40 mark. When she repeated again, fumbling inside already "what this is about", and then they calmly replied "it's relative to.......his wife"..OUTCH. The little silence like air cut abruptly sentencing his way on his chest.
That john ruetten is as much to blame for this he was seeing Stephanie even after he married and having sex with Stephanie then afterwards telling her to leave them alone
Every so often between about 3 months periods I re-watch this at around 1 AM. Maybe it's worth mentioning that I might be going through some sort of clinical depression episode but watching it soothes me somehow. Thank you Stephanie. And in all seriousness thank the investigators for putting her behind bars and giving the family some closure.

I don't agree. Think about it. All she did was answer every question in excessive detail. They didn't need to work for this at all. If she wasn't so caught off guard by the initial request to be 'informally' asked a few questions, she would have responded, and said, why are you asking? Has a crime been committed? Has something happened to John? After further questions in the first 5 mins without any clarity ,she would have said, unless you explain why we are having this conversation, I do not wish to continue. Why would anyone have said all this unless they knew it was ultimately about a murder they committed, and they were in a blind panic. She gave them everything on a platter.
@@1pootle She was highly experience officer. It was good theater, but nothing she said could be used against her. Saying can't remember is 100 times better than false details.

Yes, they spent years, particularly her dad, talking to police who hung up on him, ignored him, people said it could NEVER be her because "she's a great police officer, adopted her hubby's daughter." Her parents were treated horribly by the local coppers who complained it was a cold case, a burglary, because one had occurred in the same area so they attributed it to burglars.

She's a very good actress if so. I don't think so. I think she thinks because she's gotten away with it for so long she can act her way out of it and she thinks because the police are being nice and polite that she still will. But police will do that even when they're convinced your guilty as fuck because they want you to talk they don't want you to get defensive. Yup. As soon as they mentioned her ex's name, she knew it had finally caught up to her. Every time she asked "what's this all about", she knew exactly what it was all about.
“Shelly I think her name was” “I think she worked in a hospital” I’m sure she knew back then & still knew and remembered every detail about Sherri and I think she still hated her, felt rage for her and had no remorse or conscience.
Just to add an extra fact to add to the stupidity of.this female... Stephanie went to the hospital Sherry worked at and harassed her there. She went to their apartment and asked John to wax her ski's. She is so dumb
Sometimes, when I’m having a bad day, I revisit this video and realize that I don’t have it that bad. Just imagine, she probably had plans the day this happened-a Friday, I think, but am not positive. Dinner with her family, maybe a beer with colleagues. Instead, she ended up in jail for a murder for which she had escaped justice for decades. For those interested in a deeper dive, I highly recommend the book that details this case, The Lazarus Files.
So true. - It was a Friday - because it was actually my birthday. June 5th 2009. - She commited 1st degree murder - then put it behind her and got on with her life - and probaly reached a settled stage in her life as a older person- where she would think twice before commiting murder now - and probaly hold back. The whole love triangle with her and John and her murdered rival she was all grown out of - she met a new guy and married. - Its s shame really - not only did she brutally snuff out a innocent womans life - she built a good life for herself - and could of enjoyed a good life - but she was guilty of 1st degree murder - and this was the day the Truth caught up with her - probaly the most unexpected day of her entire life.
She literally acted like it was difficult to remember these things: her birthday, the year she was married, the year she graduated, and the current year.
And if you don't kill anyone you don't have to sit there and talk and talk. I love Judge Judy and I try to abide by her sentiment. Her brain is like a worm on a griddle and her tummy is betraying her.

Looking at her facial expressions throughout the questioning…..you can tell that she’s terrified. She also knows what’s coming but she is so scared she keeps running her mouth. She is trying to prolong the inevitable……hanging onto a glimmer of hope, perhaps, that maybe she can talk her way out. I wonder if she was thinking about that vicious bite she inflicted on Sherry’s arm and that her saliva could possibly be on it. She’s just trying to talk her way out of it.

The best part of this interview is the fact that the murder happened 26 years ago. Meaning that if they just threw this at her out of the blue then she had no idea it was coming. She was no longer prepared like she would've been back then if questioned.
Excellent point. Even though it took 26 years for Justice to occur, the fact that it caught her off guard and blindsided her was pure gold and karma defined
Great point Theresa. In the first few years, she was probably rehearsing her story…but as so many years passed, she probably allowed herself to relax and move on. Further to your point, the interrogators” casual approach was brilliant, so as to keep her calm and talking. They lured her right in, and kept calming the dusty, 26 year old alarm bells in her as they started to go off.

When they first asked her is she knew John Ruetten I'm shocked as a officer she doesn't ask if he's ok, or did something happened, or did he do something? Considering they are detectives you would think that's the only reason they would bring him up... I kind of think she knew from the beginning this was the day!
The way she rambles aimlessly about her holidays, her trips, her parties, her photos... It's as though her psyche is summoning back all of these memories of freedom in order to negate the reality unfolding before her that the horrific crime for which she'd evaded the consequences of for so many years, is now slowly enfolding her. It's as though her life is flashing before her eyes right before karma puts an end to all those happy holidays she enjoyed.
It’s actually fairly common with people who are lying. They often will add extraneous details to a story to make it sound more credible and they also do that because they are trying to come up with another lie and redirect the line of questioning.
"You know....", "Um... It was so long ago....", "Oh, I know...", "Like I said.....", "I'm trying to think....", "It's been so long.....", "I'm maybe I did talk.....", "I mean........", "I couldn't tell you......", "Again, that's all I can remember.....", "Maybe, I don't remember....", "I don't know...."

But this is so addicting to watch.
When she says "I know she got killed" , she makes it sound like it was her fault . An innocent person would have said " I know she was murdered " . "Got killed" sounds like she was doing something she wasn't supposed to be doing and she got herself killed . Hence , Stephanie thought she stole her man .
And the minute the detectives said it has to do with his wife…an innocent person would have instinctively said…I know his wife was murdered…instead she tries to deflect and say, I know he go married years ago.
She can't remember getting in a fight with someone publicly at their place of employment (a hospital of all things) but she can remember every cross street of Roscoe Blvd. Yikes.🤔

When it’s a question that doesn’t make her look guilty, Stephanie answers straight away, but when it’s something that can get her into trouble, she waffles on, makes faces etc. Such a bad liar.
I would think she would be prepared for this to happen for years. She wasn't prepared though. I wonder why she didnt throw it back on him ie did he do something? Is he ok? Something happening? She answers questions quite willingly and gives more information than necessary. I would have asked what this was all about and immediately asked for counsel. The DNA could have also been put into question as it was sitting in an old ripped envelope. It had been sitting there for years.
"John 'Rotten' is a more fitting name for him. He knew she was head over heels in love with him, but instead of being honest about his feelings (or, better yet, avoiding her completely), he used her and made her believe she had a chance with him. To make matters worse, she is a psychopath. John played with fired and poor, sweet Sherri ended up paying the price."
I agree. If you read 'The Lazarus Files', it's very obvious that he used her (Stephanie). That by no means justifies what she did to Sherri, but I believe if he had not been a wimpy user of Stephanie, thing may have turned out differently. He should have just told her he was with Sherri and let that be the end of it. And he should have participated more in the investigation, in my humble opinion.
Except the cops heard the story about how she turned up at the hospital in short shorts and a tank top to tell the nurse she was sexier and would get him back.

From 3:30 to 4:10 her contorted facial expression’s and slamming her hand on the table was probably the most telling part of this video, her shock and anxiety were off the charts, like she was dangling off the edge of a cliff. After a quarter century, her crime caught up with her and she knew this. She spends the rest of the interrogation trying to deflect and using time and the “A million years ago” phrase to cleanse and claim innocent.
@@TinyTinaTeaParty I read that after confiscating her computer from her house, they forensically revealed her search history and she had made multiple searches on this case throughout the 90’s. Ruetten and Lazarus actually got back together in 1989 for a while. Ruetten called the Detective to make sure she wasn't a suspect before getting back together with her. Relationship Rule #1: If you wonder if your potential match killed your previous Spouse, move along. I bet Lazarus was so happy and thought her plan worked.
I am surprised she didn't do a better job of getting rid of evidence that could point to her guilt. I think she expected to be given a free pass indefinitely by her fellow officers. Sheri Rasmussen was an achiever that could have done much to benefit humanity,. She had some reservations about marrying Ruetten because of harassment from Lazarus. Ruetten didn't' do enough to protect her from his sick puppy on again off again girlfriend. He should have gotten nasty aggressive with her to make her realize it was over and he was done. Lazarus thought if she got rid of Sherri she would be next in line to become Mrs.Ruetten. Fast forward DNA evidence solved this cold case and she is in jail doing time for her crime.

This video is so satisfying. This killer cop who believed she would never be caught was not only interrogated but also arrested in front of the camera. Love her facial expressions too.
The few short moments she feigns thinking about a question she already knows the answer to entirely. It gives her a few brief moments of peace, away from the questioning and stress she is feeling at the moment. It may not seem like much but inside She's dying! The panic is eating her alive! If she stalls them for 20 seconds it's 20 seconds of no questioning, no interrogation, peace and gives her a few moments to gather herself. Her face gets more and more red with each passing moment. She gets more and more afraid. She rants and goes off subject to take herself away from the moment. To take a mental breath. It's awesome they recorded this for training new detectives on reading emotion and reaction to questioning. Fascinating.
Yes u're right! After watching it many many times I can see all those moments in her eyes that u just mentioned. I didn't know about this video being used for police training, that's very interesting. Thank u for that info!
She probably spent the first few years after the murder looking over her back every other second and after a while she buried it deep down and convinced herself that she deserved to walk free because she was young and immature and learned her lesson...or justified it some other way. After that she continued to try and forget about what she had done and at this point it had been long enough that she had lulled herself into a false sense of security. This interrogation blind sided her and had her scrambling because at this point she had probably believed for well over a decade and a half that it would never happen. WHOOPS!
Her face when she is asked to give the DNA test is like a drunk Spring Break teenager who has just been asked by her parents if she has ever smoked dope.
The detective even gave her the chance to explain a “fight” and how the bite got on Sherri’s arm. Since she denies the fight, that placed her there at the crime and no other way
Why do criminals in these interviews often randomly bring up a friend dying of cancer? One of them even kept repeating that his best friend's mother was dying of cancer.
When she walked into the interrogation room, she was holding on to hope that this wasn’t the past coming back to haunt her. Then they mention John and her fight or flight went into overdrive .

At the end where she reiterates, "I can't believe this!"; its a Freudian slip, she is referring to finally getting caught for crime, not that she was falsely accused. She knew right then and there that her freedom was gone for crime she commited.
This is a common thing guilty people do. Psychologists think its a way to draw out time in order to calm down and create more time before needing to answer questions they down have a good answer for.
Yea, that's true. I think also people talk too much bcuz they are usually talkative in their normal life with others..

Great book!
Is John alive?

Looking at her facial expressions throughout the questioning…..you can tell that she’s terrified. She also knows what’s coming but she is so scared she keeps running her mouth. This is hands down the absolute, alll-time Heavyweight Champion of the World when it comes to police interrogations.
At 47:51, Lazarus says,"as soon as I walk out of here I'll remember 25 different things..."
And one of the detectives says back to her,
"Oh but you'll call us, or come over to our desks and let us know,"
Right there, she experiences another little glimmer of hope...

Then they said she was there at her own free will and she was free to go and she walked outside the room and got arrested! 😂
These detectives were sharp. They actually had to dumb it down to her level of drama and it worked.
I love this interrogation so much. Her moving her lips pretending to think to herself. She’s doing the most !!!!!

😂😂
From 3:30 to 4:10 her contorted facial expression’s and slamming her hand on the table was probably the most telling part of this video, her shock and anxiety were off the charts, like she was dangling off the edge of a cliff. After a quarter century, her crime caught up with her and she knew this. She spends the rest of the interrogation trying to deflect and using time and the “A million years ago” phrase to cleanse and claim innocent.
She is trying to put distance between what she did then... and who she is now.
Not only that but her heaving chest. She is having a panic attack basically.
@@TinyTinaTeaParty I read that after confiscating her computer from her house, they forensically revealed her search history and she had made multiple searches on this case throughout the 90’s. I guess in the early 2000’s up to this interrogation, she felt safely distanced from her crime and her panic attack is the whole thing flashing back and knowing her freedom was at an end!
Terror Management Theory at it's best! Frequent tangents give her momentary relief from the literal Terror she is experiencing!

Very intelligent analysis.
"mental breath" good good good one!
Those brief moments of reprieve are known as Terror Management Theory
She’s very comfortable talking about certain things, but you can feel her angst when they ask more incriminating questions
How can she be in that much shock when she had 25 years to imagine this scenario?
She probably spent the first few years after the murder looking over her back every other second and after a while she buried it deep down and convinced herself that she deserved to walk free because she was young and immature and learned her lesson...or justified it some other way. After that she continued to try and forget about what she had done and at this point it had been long enough that she had lulled herself into a false sense of security. This interrogation blind sided her and had her scrambling because at this point she had probably believed for well over a decade and a half that it would never happen. WHOOPS!

At the end where she reiterates, "I can't believe this!"; its a Freudian slip, she is referring to finally getting caught for crime, not that she was falsely accused. She knew right then and there that her freedom was gone for crime she commited.
She continually tries to divert by going on and on about non relevant info.
This is a common thing guilty people do. Psychologists think its a way to draw out time in order to calm down and create more time before needing to answer questions they down have a good answer for.
Yea, that's true. I think also people talk too much bcuz they are usually talkative in their normal life with others.. In this case Stefani is very nervous and she goes on and on giving the detectives the impression that she has nothing to hide.. She thinks that if she tells them so much information that they will get pleased with the answers and forget to ask her more important questions..
