I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I think it was even better than the last one because of the way you demonstrated how to use the VOR and ADF in addition to the ILS. I'll need to watch it a few more times though to fully understand it.
This is the kind of stuff that keeps me engaged after the newness of the amazing graphics wears off. 😁 Now if I could just figure out how to get RNAV to work!
One of your best videos!! Learned quite a bit in this short clip! And it's so cool that it was IMC and the runway just appeared exactly where it should!!
If you utilize the Lead radial on the app chart you can avoid overshooting the LOC, in real world ops we avoid banks in excess of 30° in IMC to keep the establishment onto the localizer smooth, last thing you want is to go out of tolerance on the last turn and go missed after a 15 mile arc procedure.
Thanks. Great tutorial but as others have said it's a lot to unpack. Will need to review the video several more times to take it all in. Thanks for taking the time!
Super helpful. Had trouble capturing glide slope last night in the 208. I had it on VS mode still was the reason why I think. Flight sim is getting better every patch. I took a two week break and it's way better than before. It's going to be really nice once all the little details are sorted like the garmin stuff.
Wow, a lot learned again. I have seen quite a few tutorials about ILS approach etc. and I'm learning now about the VOR's. This video is quite complicated but what I do is "cut it in pieces", try to replicate it in MSFS and move on to the next bit. This way it's easier to understand for me. Great video though, thanks!
Thanks so much for this. I'm busy flying a round the world flight with the caravan and still can't nail my landings. So looking forward to trying this on some upcoming flights
Squirrel, have you ever thought of reproducing a flight that WW2 spitfire pilots did from Gib to Malta, no fancy navigation and not allowed to fly over land. Multiplayer squadron would be more fun. Waiting for VR before getting back into FS. Hope you give it a go, called "club run"
If you're looking for something that works, has okay scenery, taxi systems that work, and a complete fight school built-in, I highly recommend MS FSX. Learned with it myself from scratch, and kept notes at the beginning, but it's (all) lots of basics and some older stuff, but it's your 'free' building blocks, and a virtual complete flight school at home at your own pace. I look at my (19yr) grandson who's watching me explain 2020 on his Xbox(flying by thumbs on those controllers is a joke, and buttons, sticks, the controls seem backward to me, up is down, left is right, is just crazy to me, but a few I've managed to get switched but not all, which causes other learning problems to re-learn,) and realize he's no way ready to even barely taxi or fly a simple pattern there's so much to know before you can begin. Can't wait to spring for a good yoke. Suggestions? ~late to 2020 in 24.
Thank you for yet an other great instructional video Squirrel. Very much Appreciated. I'm a newbie at all this, and you really help with these. One part of the flight that is still puzzling me is: when I am flying at my cruising alt, without using any ATC, when do I start my descent and at what rate? you touch the subject a few times, but it is not clear to me. Once again, thank you for your time in making these videos.
That where the VS (Vertical Speed) indications come in handy. If you need to drop from 14000 feet to 5000, that's a descent of 9000 feet. How far are you from where you need to be there in minutes? 10 minutes? Okay, you need to keep that vertical speed indicator at about 900 feet per minute. How far out that is depends on how fast you're flying etc, but most places without mucking big mountains in the way are pretty forgiving of getting to your approach altitude a little early, so starting with plenty of margin is usually okay.
please break down in detail how the approach chart works in relation to the flight. Ive watched a ton of vids on how to read jepp/faa charts but I'd like to see it in action.. if you did a video just like thsi but broke it all down detail by detail that would be awesome.
How about showing us the easy way first? Many of us, like myself, are new to FS 2020. Let's start with ILS basics first. A series of FS Garmin tutorials would be really nice.
oh i can tell ya about the real thing , storm lax 10 pm , so loud you can not hear a death scream, you have no idea how loud, does the sim rock from side to side 180 degree rolls ?? just asking guys ? real thing does
Im thinking of starting this sim and I,m wondering what one uses for controls. Do you by a console with throttle levers ,flaps etc or do you do everything on a keyboard or touch screen?
Great video! Question, was using the VOR just for this specific situation? I ask, because normally I just fly the approach fixes (GPS), and then when close simply click "APPR" to enter the approach mode etc. What you did in both videos was amazing, but also very confusing. Which, is great because its a chance to also lean something new! I guess what I am asking.. is in the real world is the more simple approach used?
I love these videos. The Cessna 208 is currently my plane of choice and this was a godsend as I'm still trying to learn everything. Definitely not ready to start flying the smaller passenger jets. I know it's asking a lot, but is there anyway you could provide a simple step by step write up alongside to follow or could provide a link to a good one? Thanks!
As I am learning this flight sim I have appreciated all of the proceeding lessons and have learnt a lot. I have been sticking to the Cessna which features heavily in previous lessons and was hoping that the introduction to ILS landings was made in that. Not only has Squirrel jumped up a plane, he has also outlined the HARDEST way to use ILS. Lost me completely. This is the first video here I have not upticked as it seems illogical to both change the usual plane AND describe the hardest way to implement an ILS landing. Great for advanced users, but very off putting for us novices. Sorry mate.
@@SoothesMySoul20 Many thanks for pointing that out. I obviously need more sleep as I had not even noticed that certain videos were prefixed with "Tutorial #" and this one was not. I shall slap my face with a wet kipper and wait patiently in anticipation :-)
The previous ILS video in the TBM 930 was a very easy way to do ILS, you should check that one out. To be honest, it's done the same way as the Cessna 152, except in the 152 you have to manually follow the indicators, whereas here you just let the auto-pilot do everything. Also, huge issue, the Cessna 152 doesn't have a DME, so it's kinda hard to follow a procedure when you don't know your distance to the target. The DME is the instrument that gives you a distance on the radio navaids you are connected to, like VOR beacon or LOC (ILS) beacons. With the Cessna 152 in the game, you can roughly follow an ILS descent manually, but you cannot follow the procedure of an approach chart. You will have to upgrade to the 172 for that. Another clarification. He didn't highlight the hardest way to do an ILS landing. He highlighted a harder way to approach to intercept the ILS. ILS landing is always done the same way, but how you get to the ILS is different. To clarify, landing in IFR is done in two steps : 1- Follow a specific route around the airport that guides you to a specific point where you intercept the ILS (or whatever you use to descend), this is called the STAR and is what is shown in those charts documents. 2- Actually perform the final descent (like the ILS). If you just want to practice the ILS descent, you can just roughly fly towards the axis of the airport, with good enough distance and keeping a given altitude (in this example here it's 3000ft I believe ?). Then as you intercept the ILS, you can just follow the indicators of the ILS. You don't need to follow the whole STAR to just practice ILS approach.
@@POolBacK thank you for those useful comments. I have already started using the 172 as Squirrel has used it for a few of the tutorials and found it to be as easy to fly as the 152. What put me off was the three screens in the 208 as I would rather master the 172 before venturing any further up the ladder. I must have missed the ILS video in a TBM 930 so I shall follow your advice and take a look at that. Thanks again,
@@BoxersAreTheBest don't be put off by the 3 screens. The 208 has 3 screens, but the right most screen is a copy of the left most screen. It's only used for co-pilot, just don't pay attention to it. For all intent and purposes, the 208 uses actually only two screen and is almost the same system as the 172, with minimal variation. But yeah, in general, I would recommend focusing on the 172 to do this. Just input the frequency of the ILS as NAV1, make sure to change your PFD to VOR 1. Fly to intercept the axis of the runway at a certain distance. Hold 3000 altitude for now, and as you pick up the signal, align yourself on the LOC (or press the NAV button on the autopilot to do it automatically) and then you can presse the APR button on the autopilot to automatically descend following the glide slope. Really easy.
The Cessna Caravan has giving me only trouble in MSFS2020. For some reason the autopilot messes up the trim and then the plane crashes. I haven't had this issue with any other plane.
Thanks Squirrel mate! This confirms my understanding of the technical and theoretical use of the instruments. Now all you have to do is make a video that helps me with translating it into an actual landing. lolol Keep these tutorials coming buddy. They are invaluable to pilots as awful as I. p.s. At what point would the pilot activate a planned approach in the G1000, being different from the apr button on the autopilot.
Could you explain in more depth where you get your approach plates and how you use them in game? I think I have the autopilot features down, I just don't know how to translate the approach plates, nor understand how you get them to look the way they do in game with their own window.
13:30 all that trouble. never let autopilot try land? it will flare kind of.after that turn it off and it land. and you still have time go around.wheels never touch runway
Do you put missed approach altitude in the auto pilot just for reference so you know what it is if you have to manually fly it out or do you turn on the auto pilot on a missed approach?
Amazing tutorial man. Thank you very much for publishing such videos. If I would choose the Garmin ILS approach feature, would I need to take care of setting LOC frequency or would I need just to maintain the correct altitude for GS and the system would switch at the right time from NAV GPS to NAV LOC APPROACH?
Sorry I can only give 1 thumbs up, it deserves more. As a newbie, my question: this type of approach is only possible to airports with ILS? What happens if coming into a small airport like some in FSEconomy in fog/clouds? Or even a bush airport with no lights?
On the MSFS map you can see two types of airport, the ones with blue circle have instruments procedures available, the ones with brown circles don't, and you will be required to land on visual. Make sure you check them before flying them, and check the weather forecast for those airports. You might just be able to land visually.
Where do you get the charts that fs2020 uses? For example I see your chart is dated 2019, the jeppesen charts I have are 2021 dated. Is fs2020 procedures database up to date? Where I'm from procedures are being changed frequently.
In MSFS 2020 you cannot do the whole STAR with analog gauges because it lacks the DME instrument. You can just perform the final ILS. With the G1000 172, you can absolutely do everything, except RNAV approaches are bugged.
off topic but could i have your help and seek your wisdom? i’ve searched for people having the same problem but i’ve had no luck. i enjoy using live traffic but it seems glitchy. the planes always have gen (generic) next to them, despite having a flight number. also, even when it’s a major carrier like qantas/klm, when you see the plane, it is almost ALWAYS a g36?! is this the sim, a setting i can change or a glitch? cheers!
goal ski retry sure that’s a setting which increases performance. Go into settings, general (I think, not in front of the sim) and there is a setting to switch other plans from real to generic.
Great tutorials :) What is still confusing to me is the meaning of the course. I know that the heading is used to direct your airplane into a specific direction by using the ap but what do you need the course for. I presume it has something to do with the ils approach but I'm still not sure..
The course is the direction of the VOR you want to fly to or from it , if you just hold your heading you could drift away from your desired course in case of wind for example ( captains correct me if I am wrong here)
@@mariusfuchs4927 In boats, at least, that's essentially correct: "heading" is which way the pointy bit is facing, "course" is which direction you're actually moving after everything influencing moving has been figured in. Compass tells you if you're on the right heading, other stuff (GPS, VOR, etc) tell you if you're on the right course.
Heading aims the plane in a specific direction. NAV (course) follows a line on a map: that can be a GPS route, a direction towards or away from a VOR radio beacon (known as a radial and chosen with the course knob), or a Localizer (a radio beacon that helps you find a runway). If you pick a heading, the plane flies that direction. If you pick NAV, the plane will first fly directly to the course you chose, then follow that course and automatically correct for wind to keep the plane on the course.

He means he's showing you how to do it in under 15 minutes of video time as opposed to making a 40 minute video. He doesn't mean you have 15 minutes before landing to get everything ready.

Real life pilots would be jealous of how smooth your landing was.
Isn't he a real life pilot too though?
hahaha i doubt it after many thousands of hours in the van ?? hahahahahah
@@yienmaster04 Yes, I think he is
My friend’s dad flies the C208GC daily, and he says that you usually fly over the threshold at around 100-95kts (IAS)
Who needs thousands of pounds worth of flight lessons when we have Squirrel out here doing it for a click of the thumbs up button.
Is it at all possible to use in-game information to do an ils approach without resorting to third party data? If so,how?
Greetings from Mexico. thanks for the video. how do you speed up time in the simulator?
hi wendy ya still doing Catalina in the van ? think about ya
I'm confused why you switched off of NAV to Heading mode to intercept the localizer. We wouldn't have intercepted if we stayed on NAV the whole way?
Do you put missed approach altitude in the auto pilot just for reference so you know what it is if you have to manually fly it out or do you turn on the auto pilot on a missed approach?
Will the enactment couple glide slop on autopilot?
Your doing a great job😀
bruh I buzzed past LAX ATC yesterday and I basically annihilated a couple 747's along the way at CDX LMAO, this is pro stuff
What flight controllers do you use? I couldn't see it on the kit pages? Any flight stick recommendations?
Is there somewhere where you can get these approach plates?
squirrel must be grinning after that landing lol
great videos! Hey, I loaded the C208B Mod and now my entire cabin is invisible!! No panel instruments...nada. Any ideas?
Liked for that landing
Could you explain how to set up R-NAV for the A320? That’s one of they only things I can’t figure out with it
Hey Squirrel, love your video's. Could you maybe do an ILS tutorial of a more complicated aproach? Like EHAM (Schiphol, Netherlands) for example?
Super Wow!!!
I wanted this!!
What addon is this for the maps and plates?
I hope they fix some of these broken airplanes... such as the caravan in the new patch
Sorry I can only give 1 thumbs up, it deserves more. As a newbie, my question: this type of approach is only possible to airports with ILS? What happens if coming into a small airport like some in FSEconomy in fog/clouds? Or even a bush airport with no lights?
Basically, you don't.
Great video again. Thanks!
Can you please show an ILS or Rnav approach in the C152 or C172 with analog gauges ?
In MSFS 2020 you cannot do the whole STAR with analog gauges because it lacks the DME instrument. You can just perform the final ILS. With the G1000 172, you can absolutely do everything, except RNAV approaches are bugged.
Excellent, Excellent!
is there a way to display radio altimeter altitude instead of baro?
Definitely needs a follow up video for us noobs, I mean where do you even find the frequency for the ILS Line up.
After reading some comments,. It seems like there's a lot of new fight simmers thanks to Microsoft
SQUIRRRRRRRELLLLLLLLLLL more vids please
another good one thanks. i appreciate it.
Great Video thanks, could you show the easy way too please?
Nice ! Thanks :)
hi , i keep watching these great videos , but no one sais were they get there approach plates from please ?
sorry found them
"confused Pikachu" 🤯
Could you explain how you know what arrival, approach, transition to use?
the one that approach gives you, oh you mean in the sim ?? what ever you want to practice
Nice!
But the sounds are a bit wacky, aren't they?
Love your videos! :D
off topic but could i have your help and seek your wisdom? i’ve searched for people having the same problem but i’ve had no luck. i enjoy using live traffic but it seems glitchy. the planes always have gen (generic) next to them, despite having a flight number. also, even when it’s a major carrier like qantas/klm, when you see the plane, it is almost ALWAYS a g36?! is this the sim, a setting i can change or a glitch? cheers!
goal ski retry sure that’s a setting which increases performance. Go into settings, general (I think, not in front of the sim) and there is a setting to switch other plans from real to generic.
Jonathan Young cheers, i’ll have a look! seeing major carriers flying g36’s is driving me nuts!
Jonathan Young i tried all settings. most commercial flights (live traffic) are still in the G36.
How do i get this flight plan that i use
Great tutorials :)
What is still confusing to me is the meaning of the course.
As always a great video but I dont understand the thing with under 15 min. Is the time limit some kind of thing? I must say Im not found of stressing through something
He means he's showing you how to do it in under 15 minutes of video time as opposed to making a 40 minute video. He doesn't mean you have 15 minutes before landing to get everything ready.
@@jedsithor I know that, has nothing to do with how much time I have before touch down. I just need training slower but I can see in the comments that most wants this so its only me.
