Yes Primm, this is Brooklyn in the 70s. I'm 46 years old and grew up in a "Spike Lee Joint." Loll. Our Hawaiian neighbors had a rooster. We had a shoeshine man (Mr. Flanagan) on the corner, a watermelon truck in the summer, splashed around in the Johnny Pump and ate black eyed peas for dinner. I watched this movie a thousand times, and didn’t realize he ain’t have no eyebrows until you pointed it out 💀. Having all them kids of course they gone be rowdy, they hard to keep up with 😂
My concept of the aspect ratio switch for the Maryland segment is because it’s a weird and unwanted experience for Troy so he’s simply just capturing the odd experience while altering our visual perception as well
This movie although it didn’t have a dramatic plot, there is one- a snapshot into a black family where the mom isn’t as valued as the glue until it was too late. Husband and wife dynamic as well when they have two different Approaches to a few issues shown in the movie and the strain it Could cause. It also highlights Troy coming of age as well as her brothers mn but specifically Troy in relation to her relationship to her mother and Her understanding Of being a young lady. There’s other themes In here but I feel it Beautifully showed the Stuff I listed. She becomes her mother/ young woman as she steps in due to her mother passing. His approach to tell the story to me was like making us another member of the family, we’re Dropped in the middle of their day to day. Its also kind of saying our kids are watching us even when you think they aren’t.
@@ItsACTION386 No one's debating you lol Plot is clearly defined in storytelling. It's not a matter of opinion. It's like if someone says a song has no chorus. That's not an opinion. Plot, like a chorus is clearly defined.
I took the roast of this movie personally 😄. You have to have lived the 70s to truly appreciate the nostalgia of this movie and the beautiful simplicity and innocence of that decade. Thank you for the fun fact about the eyebrows, lol. Now I finally understand that the change of lens represents a different Troy sees this new world she is in...still hate it though, lol This movie is my family to the T from the parents to the order and gender of the children to spending the summers with my only child girl cousin. Just like 😢 experienced the change of dress, hair, environment and lifestyle so did I. I don't even see groups of kids outside playing anymore unless it's school or organized and thats just sad. And just like the actors in real life, my oldest brother died, and I became a teacher like the actress. It was my father who passed away, not my mother. This movie means so much to so many ❤
The way Troy was looking at her Aunt while she was singing 😂😂😂 This movie was a classic to me, sad as hell towards the end but at least they had each other.
I broke my arm right around the time this movie came out on video and our dad strict af. Do you know how many nights my broken armed ass sat the table staring at kidney beans on the verge of throwing up? Middle kid of 5. this movie hit so close to home when I was a kid. Hood classic.
The cut from “You need clinic aide!” to the pitcher of lemonade was too good 😂😂 EDIT: Primm, you gotta do a Hood movie review of Original Gangstas or Trespass!
This is my favorite movie i grew up in the 70s playing mother may i and onentwo three redlight when music was real music and neighbors looked after one another it was such a fun time growing up in the 70s the boy who played Clinton died after this movie in real life from cancer, i will always love this movie😊😊😊
I used to watch this movie SO much as a kid and I never realized dude was missing his eyebrows lmao. I KNEW you were gonna single out that Ru Paul scene though haha. That part was so surreal.
Hope you check out Fresh (1994) sometime soon. While it's not action-packed, it certainly does have its charms with its plot and characters that reside within it.
It's boring. But boring doesn't really equal bad unless it's meant to be exciting. For example I just watched "Severance" it's nine episodes and each one is almost an hour. It's plot moves slowly and its main cast is very small with like 10 important characters with only 4-6 routinely being on screen most of the time. It's boring but it is good and popular among viewers.
I don't think you've done it yet, but a review of Low Down Dirty Shame would be AMAZING. Blankman might be good too, but I haven't seen it since childhood.
As someone who grew up with this movie, I think (totally an opinion) the reason the aspect ratio changes is to simulate Troy being in an environment that doesn't fit her. As much as she tries to make the experience what she is used to (jumping on the bed etc.) It will never be like being back on the block. Being home.
Two things could have caused the stretchy ratio: 1. It could've been a creative decision to signify how disconnected Troy's summer felt since she was away from her immediate family. 2. There could've been a technical issue during filming which resulted in stretching the ratio to fit the rest of the film's ratio.
1st guess is correct. Confirmed by Spike himself. You could’ve/should’ve researched and confirmed on your own. Takes only a moment. Just as quick as guessing.
The parents were fighting and considering divorce because dad wasn't bringing in any money. It's an important driving motif in the plot. As a kid, you miss it, but as and adult, it explains how Troy ended up going away for the summer. Send the younger kids away for the summer while we figure things out. Also, Troy going away made the camera stretch out becuase it was like a dream sequence. Nothing was real to her, everything was strange. The camera effect conveys that subconsciously. Or, that's just my interpretation. I love this movie.
its pretty sad how most kids never play outside these days.. you literally had gangs of kids roaming the streets, like your mom would kick you out the house and tell you to get back before supper
primm's finally getting into spike lee territory. can't wait to see what else is in store. also, since you put in that clip from The Warriors, that should definitely be added onto the docket.
That random "MMMMM" after the mama told Clifton she'd knock his teeth into tomorrow made me laugh. And was that really Bookem Woodbine sitting on the porch with the little kids?
LEGIT my favorite childhood movie, this story is VERY similar to my childhood, 2 older brothers with my mom and dad, I was a kid in the 90's so I was the EXACT age of Troy maybe a yr younger. I SWEAR the 90's was like this, but a bit more modern, everybody was outside everyday, it was always something. Kids, teenagers, young adults. Playing freeze tag as a young'n while jumping over the older kids playing craps on the sidewalk. the adults outside playing dominoes while the boombox playing Ice Cube in the background. I grew up in Inglewood, Ca. These kinda movies really make me appreciate my childhood and the 90's and the gift of life before the internet.
This is literally my favorite Spike Lee movie. It hits close to home PS: That "sumo" game is called Dog and the Bone in Guyana, South America. It's a game of speed. Ya gotta grab the can as fast as ya can and escape with it.
It amazes me how much Troy got from the store with that little change. Born in the 90s watching this on VCR every other day my mom always tellin me she hated black eye peas every time that scene pop up 😂. I’ll recommend this movie to anyone 6.5/10
Troy spent maybe $2 of Clinton buffalo nickels she stole when she took the Knicks tickets then Vic went to jail for punching dude next door in the face
I definitely was related to that scene of sitting not eating the black eyed peas because ewww I hated them when I was young and my grandmother would make me sit at the table until I ate all my food
I did a report on this movie for my sociology of families class. It’s a coming of age story about a lower income family who’s only daughter has to fill her mom’s shoes as caregiver and matriarch, after her mom passes.
i was born in the 80s, but my childhood was basically what Spike Lee depicted in Crooklyn. All except for the sounding of the horn for dinner, cat-throwing and the glue-huffing. 😆 BTW, Troy snuck out to the store that night. Our corner store was only four doors down from our house, but we kids were not allowed to go there after the street lights came on. What i don't understand is people dogging Crooklyn for not having a "plot". i first saw this movie when i was 10, and it never occurred to me that there wasn't a plot until i was a teenager. It didn't matter to me because the movie was so well put together. i understood it as it was and i loved it. Most likely because it resembled my own experience. You thought the Maryland segment was boring??? i think the "stretched effect" of Maryland was meant to illustrate how the Carmichael family entered into another world. It's kind of how i felt when i would leave inner city Philadelphia to visit wealthier relatives in the suburbs. It's an effect that i remembered seeing in 1960s/70s musical films as a kid. It didn't make much sense to me either, but i just accepted it as an "old movie" thing. Very much of it's time. i always felt that Viola killed the dog, but she seemed genuinely shocked to see Queenie pop out of the sofa bed. THAT scene kept me laughing for a good decade. 🤣 i am curious, Primm. How old are you?
This movie is black slice of life icon. If you grew up in the 80s you did alot of this. And the Maryland trip was so the parents could catch up on the bills. Like back then you could depend on family to do stuff like this. Like I went to Mississippi with my great grandparents plenty of summers
my aunt had this at her house and i begged my dad to put it on bc there was nothing else to watch, bro even said "uhh are you sure" before he put it in 😭 scarred me for life ill tell you that much
I remember actually half way enjoying the movie when watching it as a kid. It was also painful. It reminded me of a lot of aspects of my own childhood coming from a big family of brothers and sisters. One family member getting sent away to experience something new and different and kind of escaping the chaos of a poor big family. I also was curious about such a different setting as New York and the kind of life one in my situation would live in a totally different setting. It also made me never want to visit new York. It l looked rough. Idk why it was made and it's true there was no story line except random slice of life but it made sense to me as a kid and it made me appreciate my life and family more. It was an interesting look into a setting I had never experienced before and it felt real and relatable as if I was there. It somehow added to my knowledge and concept of living in the world because I was so young when I watched it in the 90s. It actually is kinda of a core part of me because it exposed me to another perspective of human existence when I was a still forming opinions and thoughts as a child.
Also, I think I enjoyed the second half of the movie more than primm because I'm a woman and was a girl watching the movie at the time so I related more to her in the movie than anyone else
Same, not only a lot of siblings but I'm the only girl with 6 brothers all raised under the same parents. I was also a tomboy that also went to my middle class aunts house one summer where she straightened my hair. I feel like Spike owes me for using my likeness 😅
He missed some parts on here: The nightmare part. The young couple making out In the steps. Also the girl accusing her of shoplifting. I'm amazed he didn't talk about Them parts.
I think the film looks stretched in the Maryland scenes because it’s supposed to signify the days feeling longer (being outside the city in a slower, calmer- more boring place) I also recommend doing the last dragon, set it off, or low down dirty shame .. those are all great options for good hood movies with a lil bit of action going on
Action hood movies one that came to my mind was Only the Strong. Dude returns from military to his home town. Visits his old school. Fights bullies. Teaches students capoeira. Edit to add: The dude starring in Only the Strong (Mark Dacascos) played the villain in Cradle 2 the Grave

Spike Lee said the screen stretching was supposed to purposely make Troy look like she was in a different, foreign place. It’s probably one of my favorite parts lol I always loved these types of slice of life movies.

I think Spike Lee mentioned this in an interview a while back “the stretching” scenes when Troy and the Carmichael Family visited their folks in Maryland to show the differences between his experiences “in the South” and his hometown in Brooklyn as “in the North” in a visual perspective . He said he did this on purpose. @Primm Hood Cinema You should do Blade (the Original one), Life and The Five Heartbeats next 👍🏾💯.

That's why it's not boring to you. Nostalgic bias. Without that, it's definitely bland.

I watched this movie a thousand times, and didn’t realize he ain’t have no eyebrows until you pointed it out 💀. Having all them kids of course they gone be rowdy, they hard to keep up with 😂
My concept of the aspect ratio switch for the Maryland segment is because it’s a weird and unwanted experience for Troy so he’s simply just capturing the odd experience while altering our visual perception as well
Yeah! I got it right away. Because that is how I would feel in new situations.
This movie although it didn’t have a dramatic plot, there is one- a snapshot into a black family where the mom isn’t as valued as the glue until it was too late. Husband and wife dynamic as well when they have two different
Approaches to a few issues shown in the movie and the strain it
Could cause.
It also highlights Troy coming of age as well as her brothers mn but specifically Troy in relation to her relationship to her mother and
Her understanding

Beautifully showed the
Stuff I listed. She becomes her mother/ young woman as she steps in due to her mother passing. His approach to tell the story to me was like making us another member of the family, we’re

Well said!
Yeah all that is not plot though.
@@mitijr2031 that’s your opinion and this wasn’t up for debate.

This movie means so much to so many ❤
Ok! I don’t know who this YTer is but based off this content piece alone ion like him lol 😆

"I'm from Maryland...It's not that stretchy" 🤣🤣🤣
I don't think you've done it yet, but a review of Low Down Dirty Shame would be AMAZING. Blankman might be good too, but I haven't seen it since childhood.

As someone who grew up with this movie, I think (totally an opinion) the reason the aspect ratio changes is to simulate Troy being in an environment that doesn't fit her. As much as she tries to make the experience what she is used to (jumping on the bed etc.) It will never be like being back on the block. Being home.
Two things could have caused the stretchy ratio:
@@MultilinguistGlobalFitBlessed lol, some things are common sense but I guess common sense ain't common to some.
this is Spike Lee
it's the first one 😆
@@ummeiguess absolutely, lol
The parents were fighting and considering divorce because dad wasn't bringing in any money. It's an important driving motif in the plot. As a kid, you miss it, but as and adult, it explains how Troy ended up going away for the summer. Send the younger kids away for the summer while we figure things out.
Also, Troy going away made the camera stretch out becuase it was like a dream sequence. Nothing was real to her, everything was strange. The camera effect conveys that subconsciously.
Or, that's just my interpretation. I love this movie.
That stretchy shit just made me think the site was broken. I tried watching it from an angle but the subtitles squashed so I just gave up.
I absolutely loved the stretched ratio. It made me feel just as uncomfortable as she was. Freaking incredible! I'll never forget it
As kids some might miss it, but people even at a young age can comprehend quite a surely.
its pretty sad how most kids never play outside these days.. you literally had gangs of kids roaming the streets, like your mom would kick you out the house and tell you to get back before supper
The world changed people became more dangerous
or before the street lights came on...
We where outside
No place is safe for kids anymore tbh hell not even schools

primm's finally getting into spike lee territory. can't wait to see what else is in store. also, since you put in that clip from The Warriors, that should definitely be added onto the docket.
He gotta do *Jungle Fever* now
That random "MMMMM" after the mama told Clifton she'd knock his teeth into tomorrow made me laugh. And was that really Bookem Woodbine sitting on the porch with the little kids?
Yup that's him
Bokeem the Legend
Yes, one of his first roles
It hits close to home
PS: That "sumo" game is called Dog and the Bone in Guyana, South America.
Agreed I rate it 7.5
The comfort and nostalgia alone warrant a higher rating imo
Troy spent maybe $2 of Clinton buffalo nickels she stole when she took the Knicks tickets then Vic went to jail for punching dude next door in the face
Yes a dollar went a long way back then
I definitely was related to that scene of sitting not eating the black eyed peas because ewww I hated them when I was young and my grandmother would make me sit at the table until I ate all my food
This is one of my favorites. It's a coming of age story for Troy. Spike wrote this about his sister.
Facts.. real Spikeheads know
I did a report on this movie for my sociology of families class. It’s a coming of age story about a lower income family who’s only daughter has to fill her mom’s shoes as caregiver and matriarch, after her mom passes.
Yes!!
Amen! Been there!
i was born in the 80s, but my childhood was basically what Spike Lee depicted in Crooklyn.
All except for the sounding of the horn for dinner, cat-throwing and the glue-huffing. 😆
BTW, Troy snuck out to the store that night.
i am curious, Primm.
How old are you?
This movie is black slice of life icon. If you grew up in the 80s you did alot of this. And the Maryland trip was so the parents could catch up on the bills. Like back then you could depend on family to do stuff like this. Like I went to Mississippi with my great grandparents plenty of summers
The reason the aspect ratio changes in Maryland is bc it was so different from NYC it seemed like a different world
The dog getting caught in the sofa bed was the funniest thing I've seen on screen 🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I used to rewind that part of the movie. It was hilarious to me as a kid😂
my aunt had this at her house and i begged my dad to put it on bc there was nothing else to watch, bro even said "uhh are you sure" before he put it in 😭 scarred me for life ill tell you that much

@@lisasimpson8003 oh no i think its a cool movie, i just watched it when i was very young so a lot of stuff flew over my head haha
I like how Primm was shocked and confused at the idea of kids playing outside
I had this movie on a VHS tape when i was a kid, grew up on this movie and it became my favorite! Watched it every chance i got ❤️
I'm still waiting for Vampire In Brooklyn 😢😢
He'd have a field day
He missed some parts on here:
The nightmare part.
The young couple making out
In the steps.
Also the girl accusing her of shoplifting.
I'm amazed he didn't talk about
Them parts.
I think the film looks stretched in the Maryland scenes because it’s supposed to signify the days feeling longer (being outside the city in a slower, calmer- more boring place) I also recommend doing the last dragon, set it off, or low down dirty shame .. those are all great options for good hood movies with a lil bit of action going on
The "you need clinic aid" and "go in the house" are so iconic in these at this point. All-star 🌟
