Thankyou so much for all the videos on your channel! I start at Worcester on Tuesday and have been watching some of the older ones from your 1st and 2nd year over the Summer to prepare :)
Why are students not granted more time for rather more in-depth studies? Is it mainly because Oxford wants to give a great number of people the opportunity to study? Rather than fewer and more time individually? It all sounds terribly rushed… It is of course great to have a university like Oxford!
I would say we do go into a lot of depth, it just takes a lot of work, which we (neither students nor tutors) don't always have a lot of time for. Unfortunately, that then means that when we have to revise, it gets a bit complicated...
Yeah, it’s strange. There’s no benefit to Oxford and Cambridge having 8 week terms instead of the usual 12. They do it to be different and artificially create the impression that the courses is tougher. This feeds into and supports the culture that they’re top unis and it’s so tough to study there, they only accept the best etc. But really the 8 week terms are much more likely to cause burnout, especially when you consider that having a weekend off isn’t really a thing, most students are essentially working 7 days a week. You should see libraries like the Rad Cam on a Saturday, it opens at 10 am and 10 mins later it’s completely packed and all the seats are taken.
I don't really know... I've only ever done one once before and I think they're good for identifying gaps in your knowledge and forcing you to fill them. The one I did in first year also taught me that I really needed to do more work in preparation for exams.
Welcome back fellow Oxfordian 🙂

I'm curious about the mock exams: is the purpose to identify gaps/specific areas for study in preparation for exams at the end of the academic year?
