    So, I'm from Western Washington. Lotsa fishermen and loggers out here. There are whole towns in this area where every single person is related to somebody the Coasties pulled out of a very bad thing.
    I'm an Army veteran, and all US services give each other a hard time. But I have a lot of personal respect for the USCG. Those guys have a job that's beyond difficult. For most of the Armed Services we only have to worry about potential enemies and train for that. Coasties principal opponents are Mother Nature and Human Stupidity. Their best day at the office is only breaking even.

      He must be busy lots of drugs coming in Seattle ports. I live about 20 minutes away and the drug problems around here are ridiculous. Coast Guard test isn't hard though. I mean compared to all the other branches of military except Air Force which is the easiest. I think the 75lbs probably was an over kill by a mile. But glad he got the gig and is serving his country.

      Like that: Quiet Heroes. Yes. They put their heads down, collectively risk their necks to do their jobs, more often than not to save yahoos from themselves. And until series like this, nobody really knew. Thing people should remember is these people see "action" almost every day. My Grandpa was career Army during the Korean War. Don't remember his rank, but know he was a paper pusher by his own description. USCG is BADASS!

These guys have it all. And I admire them enormously ... and have been amazed at their prowess, strength. AND THEN, like watching pro football on TV ... i began to notice ... MOST of these guys, could play guard or tackle on any pro-ball club. Most of them are BIG guys!! Really big guys!! So envious of them all.

    When I was in the RNZN we had a medic teaching us CPR. He was also a volunteer ambo and one of the things he told us about CPR was if you perform CPR on a patient and they survive, that is always a bonus because you have brought them back. He said that if they don't come back, don't beat yourself up and keep going over what you could have done, or didn't do because you have done your best but it was their time. He said that not every patient comes back. It's something that has always stuck in my mind and that was 24 years ago.

    I just looked the history of Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter service in Southeast Alaska from Dixon Entrance to Cordova which is in PW Sound. That service began in 1977 at Sitka. I worked on a commercial 44-foot seiner in S.E. for 4 years and 3 years in Prince William Sound, beginning in 1962. I would have been a lot less fearful as a young man in his early twenties had the Coast Guard helicopters been available, especially the one time in very heavy winds off the coast on the Fairweather Grounds. We had no suits or life jackets. I was just taught to always hang on to a part of the boat while we were in route, but I stayed inside in rough weather, and that was the norm.

    It wasn't the Coast Guard but an intrepid bush pilot out of Prince Rupert that pulled myself and 5 others from our sinking boat in, I swear, the last minutes before icy water topped the gunwales (Observatory Inlet c. 1985). Can't help getting echo chills watching this and SALUTE to those who go out again and again to the rescue.

    I love to watch professionals at work. We have a Coastguard over here in the UK, but nothing like this. Ours are mostly volunteers, as are the RNLI who go out in the lifeboats. Helo rescues are done by the military. Fun fact for you Americans, Prince William, our next King, served as a SAR pilot in the RAF.

    Boson=Boatswain. Can't remember what crew position. The Coast Guard got a namby-pamby rap for too long. In "peace time" they're the only ones still actually working and at risk. My Grandpa was Army Ops in the DMZ during the Korean War. He later taught high school history. He would have LOVED this series.

    • @ImogenC-rt3fm
      @ImogenC-rt3fm 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      BUT I have a question. Now I realize it makes for more exciting TV, but why does someone have to RUN to get someone? Are there no radios? Cell phones? Comm OPS? Coast Guard gets a possible 911 and they PHYSICALLY RUN to scramble a crew? Instead of using the radio? NOPE. Bad producer. No residuals for ewe.

    • @ImogenC-rt3fm
      @ImogenC-rt3fm 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And however: Really do think producers need to draw back on the staged reenactment. It obscures the real stories. It paradoxically shows you don't believe in the story you're telling. Oh, I'll watch, but with a skepticism that is a disservice to the people who risk their lives FOR REAL every day on American soil/water.

    I found these shows from when I was looking into the Northwest Territories when my brother and his family lived up there. I've watched these videos several times over the years and each time they are as exciting as the first. One thing I hear often but don't know what it means is "door speed". At 6:53 you will hear the pilot say "you have door speed". Does this mean that the aircraft has slowed to a speed that it is safe to open the door? Anyone who knows for sure, I'd appreciate you letting me know! Many thanks!

      I believe it’s the speed the helicopter can fly safely with the door open so the technician can either search the ground or water on his stomach looking out the open door, or to look for a place to land when the terrain is uncertain. I looked online and surprisingly couldn’t find a definition, so I’m using common sense after having watched some of these videos several times. I hope that helps! 🇺🇸

    I love to watch the Coast Guard videos. I used to set in the same electronic classes (Navy)
    with Coast Guard students..... Something very serious.... The video with mom and dad (a pilot) swinging their little daughter by both of her arms..... Hundreds if not thousands, every year end up ripping shoulder muscles that often can never be corrected 100 percent.
    Kids love it but do not love the surgeries that follow.

    i'm all about equal opportunity, but seems like he was treated so differently then the "special girl" the one EVERYBODY liked and wanted to help and gave extra praise and attention to. sucks but its true. seeing the difference in that, knowing professionals in the coast guard would treat a woman 50 percent different in the standards is scary. because chief fowler is right people can and will die. so why not set the bar level and standards equal to any and all person regardless of their gender. love this show, but definitely exposed some weakness here on television. The United States military should not discriminate.

    I always feel sorry for the guys who dont make it but Brett not telling you had a previous injury is just irresponsible, that could have happened when you were saving someone life...
    To the skipper who asked about the gun safety...well done you, thats a first from all that I have watched so far, Ive made several comments about guns on board.
    To the producers...just one question (I know I wont get an answer to but anyway....) is it really necessary to repeat every story 2-3 times in every show? It becomes really irritating after a few episodes....as much as I love watching these awesome coast guard rescues... I dont think any of us are stupid we dont need to be told the same thing over and over and over and over again...
