    You should never paint straight over watered down PVA. Yeah the PVA will bond to plaster but paint wont bond to PVA the same way. Yeah the paint may last a while but its a weak bond between both and within time peeling, cracking is inevitable......

    NEVER use PVA if you paint the walls after, the paint will not stick to it, ONLY use PVA on bare plaster/plasterboard BEFORE you wallpaper, emulsion paints dont stick to plastics

    David Blunketts guide dog could have done a better job of the plastering. Glad you were able to sort it out though but it should never have happened in the first place. PVA solves so many problems around the house. Used it to stain block bitumen on a door once. Still looks good 30 years later.

    Another great informative vid. I was told to use watered down emulsion to mist coat and pva was frowned upon when I suggested it.
    They said why pva when you can mist coat and then apply second coat. If you pva you're going to have to apply 2 coats anyway... Its a debate that won't die down
    Also, do you use a foam gun, as they keep longer than the normal bottles with plastic tubes?

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks, not got round to getting a foam gun yet. And for a mist coat it's not true because you end up putting two coats of your expensive paint on anyway. You have to use a non vinyl paint and thin it down loads so it soskes right in for a mist coat. So sometimes it doesn't look solid enough with just one more coat especially if you're using a different paint.

    • @mikedavies3361
      @mikedavies3361 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Watered down pva makes the plaster less porous it’s used to slow down the suction and therefore slow down the drying process when plastering. But you should never use it prior to painting. It seals the new plaster and the paint sits on the surface. You don’t want that, a mist coat on the other hand sinks into the porous plaster so that the following top coats adhere properly. I’ve rollered walls over existing paint and the old paint pulls off to reveal a bare plastered wall. This is because watered down pva has been applied or they haven’t used a mist coat. The error is only discovered at a later date. I’ve also seen people with newly plastered walls covered in sticky watered down pva, so they’ve wrecked their smooth walls. Crazy.

      @@orbitalforest you are absolutely correct, not using P.V.A.I was a painting contracts manager and would NEVER use P.V.A for a mist coat.Most paint manufacturers recommend that whatever the finish emulsion is, you thin it down approx 10% for the mist coat, and that includes silk or mid sheen emulsion.
      As you know, bare plaster would generally require 1 mist coat and two top coats, but if you use P.V.A. you would then have to apply another 3 coats of paint in order to obtain satisfactory coverage, especially if the finish colour is light.
      I knew one painter who would use contract emulsion to size walls before wall papering instead of either glue size or thinned down paste. I suppose I must be old school !

    Very interesting & informative as always, thank you. Just a bit confused, by your comment at 8.08 that you were going to thin the vinyl matt, having stated that vinyl paints shouldn't be used as a mist coat. Having sealed with diluted PVA, why do you then thin the paint for the first coat? And what kind of ratio paint to water please? Sorry if I have the wrong end of the stick!

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you... sometimes your paint may be too thick for your need... diluted pva helps with adhesion of the paint but you can still apply your paint too thick leaving brush marks. It's understanding the viscosity of the paint your using.

      Painting and Decorating . Why I’m asking is... a lot of my customers have watched this type of video and tried doing it themselves , then, either got bored or can’t do it to a decent standard and call me in. Then when I ask them what they’ve put on the walls ... 9 times out of 10 it’s pva , usually that hasn’t been diluted correctly , then I come along to try and emulsion it and have no end of problems !. 37 years and still coming across people who think “anyone can paint”🤬

  • @bert754
    @bert754 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The data sheet for the paint that you applied clearly states a thinned coat + 2 full coats of paint on new plaster. Why did you totally seal the walls with PVA? If there is any moisture left in the new plaster which clearly you were not aware about you then have a potential problem on your hands. You then say that the walls were damp in one place and then go on to use a damp wall sealer which could if the walls are exuding dampness as you are inferring will then blow off the paint that you have just applied. Surely if the walls were damp they should have been tanked prior to plastering?

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No problems and Vinyl paints are no good for sealing plaster as a mist coat. You need to use a contract matt for new plaster work. No damp in the walls just a small patch at the bottom because of the damp course, but that's sorted now.

    • @bert754

    • @mikedavies3361
      @mikedavies3361 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes you could wreck the walls even more quickly with a roller! Pva reduces how porous the new plaster is. The paint rather than sinking into the plaster just sits on the surface and you run the risk of it pulling off the wall when repainting. Use a mist coat. Pva has the opposite effect.

      That is one reason but not why totally. A mist coat can be a pain to apply and in my opinion it's not as strong as PVA. Too many times I come across a mist coat that is failing. Strip paper off walls and it brings the paint off as well, but not if you PVA before painting.
