What?! There is a hole at the top and bottom of the nav station? ;) I have gotten that request a few times over the years. I'll see if we can squeeze it in :)

I installed two 1" air vents on our holding tank to ensure plenty of cross-ventilation to keep the "good" aerobic bacteria healthy and avoid letting the tank go anaerobic. We use Unique brand enzyme treatment which is the best for this -even better than KO from Raritan.
These freely flowing vents also make pumpouts and macerator pump-overboards go quickly and easily since air can get into the tank very easily when the poo evacuates.
The 1" vent hoses go to 1" plastic mushroom head skin fittings high up on the hull. They don't get plugged up by wasps or other insects like those screened tiny through-hull vents that are usually used for this purpose. I can spray my deck wash hose directly into them to wash them out or quickly fill the tank to rinse it out when pumping it out to get the tank more squeaky clean. Well closer anyways.
But when we overfill the septic tank it will eventually come shooting right out through these through-hulls and drip down the side of the hull. It has to go someplace. Yuck, and pretty obvious to passersby as well. At least it doesn't clog up the vents and they can be easily backflushed to clean any poo residue back down into the tank.
Since one of these vents is near where we board our dinghy I can tell with my nose when the tank is getting close to full since it starts going anaerobic once there is less than a couple of inches of air left over the poo level. There just isn't enough surface area to volume ratio to keep the tank bacteria aerobic so we know when it is getting time to call the pumpout boat, drop by a pumpout dock or do the 3-mile cruise to open water.

11:22 in my environment the 90 degree fitting (entering into the sea strainer) causes a traffic jam with all the loose flora here in the river. Makes for some fun times un-clogging the mess. I'm doing away with these sharp bends heading into the strainer.

Excellent installation, but I got somewhat worried when I saw the heavy Sailrite sewing machine in the compartment, jumping around in bad weather, smashing the water inlet ....😥 you get the point. If you put a sensor in the bilge and use the humidity, you get an indication of excessive water as a pre-warning before it gets critical. Cheers.

Galley countertop... you know you've been watching Mads a long time if he's renovating the renovation.
Unlike some of the ppl here I like all the tech you put into your boat... A thing to note is that "cloud" connected is often not a feature for the customer its a feature for the manufacturer so many examples of companies using "cloud" for planned obsolescence, turning off and locking features behind a paywall or simply going broke and turning off all their cloud servers, I strongly recommend you make sure they can operate standalone and you only use the cloud "feature" as a convenience thing and not your primary data logging
Hej Mads - you probably allready know, but you can control the relays in the cerbo with the ruuvi tags so you can use them to turn on a fan or similar. I use that feature in my boat to control the diesel heater and that works perfectly
Can totally vouch for the Ruuvi tags - great little things! I have had them for several years. Both outside and inside. If they're cold the battery lasts ~ a year. The freezer one may need new batteries every 6 months or so. The ones that are warm will last around 2 years.
Was about to ask this, figured the battery life would be naff in a freezer.

4:06 Crazy theory, but i think the issue is actually inverse. Because you cut all that material, the wood naturally warped (as all wood does, even sealed wood - you need specific types of treatments to make it very stable) and because it did, that then made the varnish to chip.
Were it my countertop, i'd flatten it from the other side, use a router with a dowel bit and cut a dowel slice all the way through (as your ruler sits) for a hardwood (or metal) piece to insert and thus introduce an element of stability into that narrow section. No glue, and with a hand push fit (so some sanding would be required. The reason you want that reinforcer to be slightly loose is to not crack the wood.
To make the wood more compliant with the dewarping, i'd sand the grain in the area and use a wet towel and hot iron (max temp and a cotton towel) to infuse a little bit of water, thus flexibility, into the wood.
You'll need to clean the A/C raw water system with Barnacle Buster periodically. It'll be much easier if you set up the plumbing for that now. I've had to clean mine every 3 weeks during peak barnacle season. The barnacles and algae that grow in the lines cause reduced heat transfer (by insulation and also by reducing the flow rate) and the HPF fault. It's not the only reason for an HPF fault, but it's a very common one. You can perform a cleaning with BB while in the boat yard, out of the water.

@@denniscaptain8635 The A/C raw water system can be cleaned when the boat is in the water, or out of the water, either way is fine. Barnacle Buster is circulated in a closed loop from a bucket with a small submersible pump into the raw water loop before the sea strainer, and back to the bucket before it would exit the boat via a thru-hull. To facilitate that, fittings need to be installed at those two locations. Removing clamps, etc, isn't something to be done so frequently, which is why installing fittings for BB circulation is better.
Check your engine for excess crankcase pressure.
On my Perkins, the vent from the valve cover was too small, which created leaks at most of the gaskets and seals. A common issue on the 80’s engines. I proceeded to remove the valve cover, removed the oil strainer at the valve cover vent. Drilled the vent from a 1/4” to 3/8”, cleaned and polished the valve cover. Then re- installed the screen and then the valve cover. A new hose and I now have used the engine about 700 additional hours, with no leaks or oil seepage.

Your over temp warning on AC ---- My son replace his 1982 Marine Air that sounded like it would quit at any minute I replaced my Maire Air as it was very noisy and about 24 years old.The units are 12K and 16K My 16K throughs the high heart error Called Webasto and they say that I do not have high enough water flow. Rating of pump is over 200 gpm. I use 3/4 in hose to the unit. The old 16K Marine Air had no issues. That will not carry that much water. If I don't used the "auto" mode it work just fine. Is cool and quite! Think that I remember that you are using th Webasto.
My sons 12K had error msg indicating ice build up. He does not run on auto no problems.

I think you need to give up on the wood kitchen worktop - man made material will fare better in that environment. Surprised you did not do an epoxy pour on the island/fridge top. Alternatively the OSMO product range for the Island top - good hard wearing and easy to refinish.

The shell-shocked crew of a Polish tourist yacht have told how they survived a terrifying 45-minute attack by a pack of killer whales in Spain but could not save their boat from devastating damage.
The attack, one of many reported in the waters around Spain, happened in the Strait of Gibraltar in the early afternoon of October 31st, it has been revealed. The boat, operated by the company Morskie Mile, later sunk but all the crew survived.

Have a similar victron setup with globallink 520 and Ruuvi. Have ziptied a sensor to the alternator to have temp control while charging the Li battery bank.

Cool, we have Ruuvi sensors too! We too discovered the need for a USB dongle thingie to connect to Cerbo...
I added the Ruuvi tags about a year ago in almost the exact same places. The other thing I used the Cerbo for was to wire digital alarms for when the bilge pump cycles. I've always had a counter, but when I am on trips away from the boat it gives a great comfort feeling getting alerts whenever the pump cycles.

I forgot you were had pulled the boat and I had a mini little heart attack when you drilled that hole for the seacock.
The great thing with a USB-dongle is that You can use an extension cord and place the antenna where it hears everything.
Centrifugal pumps CAN handle some lift on the suction side.
The spec is listed as NPSH.
You nailed it though...NPSH is dramatically affected by line losses.

Also using the Cerbo GX, great stuff, but the display is a bit basic. I have moved to Grafana running on a Raspberry Pi and made up my own dashboard, way more data displayed including the Ruuvi temperature trends.
There are youtube how to videos and the Victron community forum has soem instructions on how to set this up.
Sounds awesome :) You could also look into GUImods for the Cerbo box - gives you some customization of the display.

If I knew I was going to get a different boat my heart would not at all be in doing any more projects on the old boat other than just that which needed to be done to sell it. I'm boat monogamous for the most part if you don't count the dinghy which is more like a pet than a partner. I can only serve one boat at a time. Once I decided to leave my boat for another I could not look back.

Hi Mads, been watching for years and I love your show. What would happen with all your electronics in a lightning strike? I hope you never have to find out. I noticed when you’re making holes in your boat now you don’t drill fill drill any more.
Before you hassle with a long USB extension cable to the midship, try with a 20 cm extension. Getting the dongle away from other electronic devices a couple of centimeters could be enough.

Mads - as a cook, I really wouldn't varnish the island top - would it not be better if you oiled it It is always going to take a beating and will be as durable with a good linseed oil coating.
Instead of a new counter top. Dry the old one out in the sun. Then soak it in epox resin wrap it in plastic and get a heavy truck to park on it over a weekend or an equal heavy object.
Unstable bluetooth connection will tend to introduce a big current draw as the device will try to reconnect over and over again.
Another Glorious video! Excellent discussion about the technology and its application. But, could you set the clock on the oven? Blinking 12:00 brings back visions of the days of VCRs...
The reason the clock is flashing is that the oven doesn’t work on 60 hz (power). Every time I use the oven I disconnect shore power to force the inverter back to 50hz. So while we’re in Trinidad I’m afraid the clock will be flashing 😉
@@SailLife Oh, wow. I was thinking you were powering the oven and other items down when not in use (to save power), but never considered the 50/60 hz issue. What other issues / limitations does having shore power at a different frequency impose on the overall electrical system? Is the effect simply that the AC portion just changes frequency suddenly when shore power is supplied? I forget if you're using a Victron Quattro or Multiplus, but wouldn't that throw its "Power Assist" feature into a tizzy?
@@tubeuser2350 The only 50/60 hz issue we have is the oven, and I suspect that is only because it's a combination oven (convection and microwave). The oven throws some error codes in its display when you turn on the power at the wrong frequency. The quattro handles the switch from 50 to 60 and back again without blinking. Computers and airconditioning don't get interrupted. As soon as we're connected to shorepower, the quattro simply syncs up with the grid frequency. Works really nice - except for the microwave ;)
Hey Mads, I met you very briefly in the chandlery at Peakes a week or so ago. We have left Trini and are now in Grenada. One question I have is what Starlink 12v kit did you order? Hi Mads, we met at the Annapolis last month. I am Dennis with Dufour 61. I installed 4 of those Ruuvis in my Victron setup, all good! But, do you know how to see historical data on them, it only shows highs and lows for the last 24 hrs. Thank you.

Thanks for another great video Mads. Is that Sailrite sewing machine secured down while you sail? It seems like it’s heavy enough to cause a lot of damage if you’re in rough conditions.

Hmm.. how well does those sensors last in marine environment? I know that ruuvi tag is a Finnish company and those are made in Finland (hence its quality), but still...
hehehe, see a lot of modern integrated systems that even stumps techy ones and consistently need expensive upgrades. Can't beat the good old reliable analog that just keeps on working

How came you are no longer installing the other type of thru hull “Marelon-type composite valves “ ?
I use both bronze and composite - both have pros and cons. I haven't used Marelon specifically because they're not available in Denmark (where I did the refit). For composite thru hulls I sed TruDesign

did I miss the install of the dive compressor? or is it some sort of all in one unit that doens't really have to be "installed".
There is not much too it :) I basically just needs power and clean air. We keep it in the technical compartment with a long hose to draw air from outside of the boat

I think it's fairly close. I'd say of you want to compare them 291 is close to 4200 and 292 is closer to 5200.
