    Don't spend hundreds of dollars on a portable A/C for your home, just build one for $8 dollars and 10 minutes of your time! You can pick up a Styrofoam cooler for about $4 at most stores. Dryers vents cost about $2 dollars a pop. All you need after that is an old fan and some frozen bottles of water!
    Once your box is completed following the instructions in the video, simply add the frozen bottles of water and go to town. My home was 78 degrees and after running the box in the living room for a couple hours it dropped into the 60's which is fantastic on a hot day!
    If you load the cooler with frozen bottles, the cooler will last anywhere from 3-6 hours which gives you enough time to have another set of bottles freezing in the interim. This is great for single rooms on a hot day and will drop the overall temperature quite a bit. Enjoy!

      I like the bottles too, this keeps the cold fluid trapped unlike exposed ice cubes or buckets of water. Any water that condenses on the outside and pools in the bottom of the styrofoam cooler, is from the room air so it is also a mild dehumidifier. Good one!

    A few caveats here that he doesn't go over...
    Whatever containers you use to contain the water, do not fill them up all the way because water expands when it freezes.
    Instead of angling the vents forward like the video shows, instead point them straight up and put this thing behind an oscillating fan. The fan picks up the cool air and pushes it all over the room. Handy in apartments where the bedroom is often far away from the actual air conditioner, and it costs a small fortune to keep your ENTIRE apartment cooled at night. Doing this keeps my bedroom cool all night, and I live in Minnesota, where the air is hot and humid, and can be 80 deg F outside at midnight (like it is as I'm writing this).
    What he also doesn't talk about is that the air sucked in by the fan and pushed over the ice, condenses moisture onto the bottles of water. A decent amount of it too. In the morning you'll need to wipe off the bottles, re-freeze them, and dump the water out of the container.
    A FINAL note... is that the fan ALSO sucks in dirt, dust, pollen, ragweed, your sweat hanging in the air, your BO, your farts, which collects in that water. Periodically you either need to get yourself a new container, or put some bleach in there to kill whatever is growing in it.

      Responding from to a very old comment, but the salt will not add to the thermal inertia of the water (won’t cause it to become cooler). Keep in mind that ice doesn’t just stop cooling down at 32F, that’s just it’s freezing point. The salt just means that the freezing point is lower. If 2 bottles, one with and one without salt, were both brought to 20F, the one with salt wouldn’t freeze but they are both still the same temp.

    I've seen these things all over the internet with comments from people who are amazed at how simple it is to make your own air conditioner. This is not an air conditioner, it will not cool your room. The only thing it will do it blow cool air at you as long as you sit directly in front of it. In order to cool the room you need to remove the heat and this doesn't do that. If you don't mind sitting in the exact same position for the time it takes for the ice to melt, then you'll get minimal relief. Your dismay will come when you run out of ice and have to turn the thing off only to realize the humidity in you room has increased and now you're hotter than you were before.

    Thank you so much for making this video. This would have never crossed my mind to make, and I really needed an air conditioner. I made it, but the 30-quart styrofoam cooler got bad reviews which included that it leaked, so I bought the 45-quart styrofoam cooler for $8.97+ tax. Then I couldn't find those dryer vents in any hardware store or even Wal-Mart, so I bought some adjustable 4-in aluminum elbow tube things for $4.28 each + tax. I also had to buy a drywall saw, $6.98 + tax, since I didn't have anything to cut the 1 1/2 " thick styrofoam. Everything came out to under $25, minus the tax, but still is a lot better than spending $400 on a window unit air conditioner. As far as the electric bill goes, that fan that I already had and placed on top of the cooler was going to run with or without this make-shift air conditioning thingy anyways. I live in an area where the average temperature for this month is way above normal, so I really needed this. Thank you so much!

    Just a tip: If you fill the bottles leaving a bit of air in the tops, you then squeeze the bottles to expel that air. It will allow the bottles to expand easier. I was surprised this does work a little. At least you will get a bit of relief. Do not just place ice cubes in the chest, as they will melt there, and then the vapour will be drawn up by the fan and let out into the room. The more vapour in the air, the more hotter it gets. De-humidify the air by keeping vapour out of it and then the froze ice water cools the air down. ;-)

It works if I start when the room is cool after the night time. The climate I’m in it gets hot in the day but cool at night, so when I wake up it’s cool. So I start it once it starts heating up outside, and it helps maintain the cool air.

    This is a cheap and good hack. In my city, there's an ordinance for when AC units can be turned on. And since there are units facing to the west, it can get pretty warm/hot in the afternoon hours. And I really don't want to shell out 300-400 bucks for a portable AC for just 1 month use before the actual AC unit is turned on. Great video!

    You can't cool any space unless you throw the heat out of the window! The fridge will produce more heat freezing the ice used to cool the room.
    Only applicable if you have a fridge somewhere in the non-living room, or if you freeze the ice at night (when it's not hot) and use it during the day.

    I lived in Arizona for 11 years, and trust me it gets hot there, REALLY hot. The "technical" name for these is 'evaporative cooler'. In Arizona they use water rather than ice, and they are very effective. This small version DOES work IF:
    1> the humidity is below 50% (from USA Today)
    2> you use other small fans to circulate the air in the room (this also works with regular AC, according to my electric provider
    running an 8 inch table top fan will make a room feel 10 degrees cooler and according to my tests this is true, FYI my table
    top fan uses 42 watts)
    3> the room you are trying to cool is not too big (ie, the larger the space the more ice or water and fans you need)
    As to your freezer working harder to freeze the ice all I can say is LOL! It's common knowledge that a full freezer is more
    efficient than a half empty one! but that's easy enough to check for yourself - i'm betting your freezer will come on at the
    same or nearly the same rate - what really makes your freezer work harder is opening the door, DUH! Your freezer HAS to come on at a certain rate no matter what anyway.
    And finally, even if you live in a more humid climate, this is an excellent emergency measure if your AC goes out in the middle of July.
    Thank you for this video :-)

      Thanks for the info. I'm considering this ice chest option to cool my very small closet/vocal booth (not ventilated) in Los Angeles. I don't have central air, just a window A/C...but it's loud and also too complicated to run a duct to the closet.
      But I'm wondering if the ice chest A/C generates any condensation that might damage electronics and condenser microphones. I have two mics, an LED monitor, and bluetooth keyboard and mouse in there...and a guitar amp.) I'm not entirely sure but, isn't this slightly different than a swamp cooler, since the water/ice remains in plastic bottles?
      More importantly, if there is condensation from the ice chest A/C, does that lead to a possible mold situation? Or could it also lead to rust on some metals?
      And I've seen others recommend a de-humidifier if there's condensation. Or am I just overthinking this?

    The return removes the humidity as stated on the TRANE website as follows, "Once warm air inside your home blows across the indoor evaporator coil, its heat energy transfers to the refrigerant inside the coil. That transfer, in turn, “cools” the air. The refrigerant is pumped back to the compressor where the cycle begins again. The heat absorbed by the refrigerant is moved outside your home while cooled air is blown inside. Moisture that contributes to humidity is also condensed out of the air.

    To all those commentators that can not see why the freezer has to work harder, because "it is always on"
    Even though the device itself is always on, the compressor that runs the cooling unit is not. It is controlled by a thermostat.
    So the compressor is switched off when the inside temperature goes below a certain threshold and back on when the temperature has increased above another certain threshold.
    Thus, when you put a lot of water bottles inside the freezer the compressor will run for a longer time in order for the device to pump the heat out of the water and into the room outside the freezer.
    I tried this idea myself a couple of summers ago to cool my office, well aware in advance, that I wold make the kitchen, where the freezer is located, hotter.
    Now, the cooling effect I experiences in the office was not to my satisfaction. And the kitchen became so hot that it was unbearable to stay there, not to mention doing any cooking.

(AKA, I would say I know what I'm taking about) there's 2 things wrong here. One, a A/C unit physically removes heat from the air and moves it outside of where its cooling. this system is simply blowing out air from a cooler, which feels cold, but your never getting rid of the heat, just masking it for a little bit. Also, I've yet to see anyone comment on the fact that a infrared laser temp gun cant measure the temperature of a gas only solid objects. so all he showed you at the end was the temp of either the cooler box or vent material, not the air coming out

  • @HavenGuild
    @HavenGuild ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Remember, it is the surface area that makes all the difference. Having "shelves" of ice, or a lot of chunks spread out, would make it even colder, but may also melt it faster. It's a trade-off you'll have to decide. If you happen to have a deep freezer for meats, etc., like I do, it can go as low as -16 to -20C, and will also take much longer to melt. Certain gel packs also take longer to melt, but may also transfer cold more slowly, so decide what works best for the situation.

    • @postingusername3506
      @postingusername3506 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. Net effect would actually be warmer, since freezers aren't perfectly efficient. We humans are really good at heating things up. But not so good at cooling them down. Heat is just energy. We displace the energy to produce cooling. We very rarely trap energy in chemical bonds with a net cooling effect. But we release energy in chemical bonds all the time. So yeah, we're pretty good at heating things up. Not so good at cooling them down. But a freezer compresses air, making it very hot in the process. Then it holds it at high pressure until it cools down (heating the surrounding environment in the process). Then in decompressing that now room-temperature air, the air becomes cold. Look up the gas laws, PV=nRT, if you want to understand why this works. But it's just a displacement of the heat.

    This isn't quite as good for the electric bill as people might think. When you put that much water in a freezer, it "shocks" the freezer, and it ends up using a lot of electricity just to get it to cool down. This is because everything else in the freezer absorbs the heat from the water you just put in, and if it's hot enough to need an air conditioner, even the coldest tap water is going to be quite warm.
    So making the water into ice is not free, and is not a flat rate. If you do this, you will see your electric bill spike more than just what running the fan costs. However, I cannot really say by how much because it varies based on the insulation of the freezer, how much people are opening the freezer to grab things like icecream, and even how much water you're freezing and how frequently.

      The freezer has a thermostat that monitors the temperature in the freezer to make sure that it keeps the freezer within a certain range. This thermostat is not much unlike the one that controls central air conditioners for houses, businesses, and apartments. If you put liquid water in the freezer, then the freezer becomes warmer, the thermostat detects this and the freezer has to work harder. Also my use of the word shock does not refer to electric shock, but thermal shock.

    I made two of these coolers, in Canada,the cost came to $35-40 each. Unfortunately, while they do help 'somewhat' if they are two inches from your body, they definitely will not cool a master bedroom in 37C heat. They help a bit. The design could be much better.....you need a more powerful fan, you need to fun some pipe inside that comes under the ice, not just on top, which does not much other than to melt the ice faster. If I made another, I would use a marine blower, a real cooler and would run the pipe inside and have the ice cool the pipe rather than blow just the top of the ice......there are more video's on youtube that show these builds. Thanks for the great idea though! Just wasn't really as effective as I had hoped.

      So, the only issue is the amount of electricity for running an air conditioner versus the amount necessary to run the fan. Those are the variables. The freezer is a constant.

    The problem with these sorts of "air conditioners" is that freezing the water causes a net gain (of heat) in the building. It is more efficient to run a small air conditioner to get the equivalent amount of cooling. Also, comfort on a hot day requires cooling and dehumidifying the air. This "air conditioner" will dehumidify a slight amount but nowhere near as well as a traditional AC. I think this type of cooling system would work well for camping if you can pipe the air into a sleeping bag.

      your absolutely correct, this project is useless and will actually heat your house. when you put something in your freezer that is warm, it must run the compressor more often to maintain the temperature inside the freezer until that something is at the same temperature as the freezer, this creates extra heat on the outside of the fridge, and it will ALWAYS generate more heat than it can cold, due to friction and other efficiency losses in the compressor. this is why air conditioners exist, they send all the heat created out of the house, and all the cold air inside. the only possible way for householdhackers idea to actually work would be if you had your fridge outside, or if you buy ice from the gas station

    • @Oopsie223
      @Oopsie223 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      RickMakes it may increase the heat created by the refrigerator but you would have to look a the efficiency of an air conditioner versus this method (of a specific design) and divide by the cost of electricity to determine which is more efficient.

    • @redlinerer
      @redlinerer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1 device designed for a specific purpose of cooling air (air conditioner) is going to be more efficient than a fridge/freezer+fan, if it was more efficient to use a fridge, then air conditioners wouldn't exist. point being, using this air conditioner or a real air conditioner to cool the same room, the real air conditioner will ALWAYS be more efficient, cool a larger space and do it faster. you can either save money in the short term and build this, or save money in the long term and buy a small room air conditioner. btw do some research, this video basically shows how the first air conditioners worked before the industrial age. On a whole, this will *heat* your house. The heat in the liquid water in the bottles is pumped into the house by the freezer. The heat in the room where you place this device will be transferred to the ice bottles. The cycle continues when you place the thawed bottles in the freezer. But because nothing is 100% efficient - the freezer, the fan, ect, there is heat produced by everything plugged in to the wall. Now this isn't to say this won't move heat from your bedroom to the kitchen so that you can manage to sleep without waking up in a puddle of sweat, but do try to think of this as a temp solution and not something to be relied upon long term.

    Dear Household Hacker,
    Question I thought might be interesting to see. As we know salt water has a lower freezing temperature than regular water; how would the temperature this handy dandy A/C differ if you were to freeze some water bottles with a salt water solution instead of regular water????

    I did all this but the temperature of the air coming out of the bucket filled with ice was only around 65 degrees F. The temperature in my room didn't change at all. (78 deg. F before and 78 deg. F after). I had the fan on for over an hour with no change in the overall temp of the room. Anyone have similar problems?

      TheNewRiflemanBob you either have humidity above 50% which he states this will not help or you have too big a room or not enough ice..which when melted must be exchanged. Using additional fans can help. Not if the humidity is over 50%. An air conditioner is different this is an evaporated cooler. Try just pointing it at you in the room like you would with a fan.

    this does not work. I made it and I've had it running for an hour and my room doesn't feel any cooler. The only benefit is that it cools your face when you put your face in front of it, but you can just do that with a fan.

Yeah, don't have that laying around...

This is for 1 room or a 1 bed room. And yes it will take at least a few hours for you to notice the difference. Anyone with a hint of understanding of basic thermodynamics knows this is not very effective and is very inefficient. As a mechanical engineer, I've see and tried doing similar things in the past, but ultimately they fail, and you can't make an effective cooling device just with ice and fans, it just won't work when you take all things into consideration.
    To keep it simple and quick:
    1) Consider the energy increase and heat produced by your freezer while freezing all those bottles of water, as you load up your freezer with items, it has a harder job to do.
    2) Consider the fact that this little AC won't cool down any room, no matter how small, it will just make noise and blow slightly cold air, it will only be effective if it blows directly at you from a short distance....but then again, a normal fan (like the one he uses) does exactly the same, and has the same coldness effect, because it blows the air faster than the flow is through those two small tubes, and makes up for the lack of ice with higher airflow.
    3) The hotter the room = less effective this will be = faster the ice will melt = more time spent freezing ice in your freezer = more electricity spent = more heat generated by the freezer = overloading the freezer might lead to it's failure, especially during hot days.
    4) Moisture, the last thing you want during this summer heat, when you're sweating all the time as it is, is high humidity in your room, and that's what this thing will bring you, as the ice is in contact with hot air around it, lots of humidity will be released into the air. If you wanted the AC to be effective at least a bit in the first place, you would have closed the windows, otherwise the hot air coming in would cancel out the effects. But closing the windows would built up the humidity really quickly.
    A way to slightly improve the design of this would be to use a container with better insulation properties, using those little cold packs that stay frozen far longer than water ( I don't know how you call them in english)and using some kind of a filter for humidity, which would all make this project as expensive as buying a small portable AC.
    So while this looks cool, and works if you want something loud to blow slightly cold and very humid air into your face from 1 meter away, it's ultimately just an inefficient gimmick.
    How inefficient? Well...imagine it this way, what you're effectively doing is almost exactly the same (even less efficient) as opening your freezer, and blowing a fan into the freezer so as to force the cold air out of it. That's what you're doing here, except you're not using the freezer itself as a container for ice, you're using it to produce ice, and then use that ice in a far less efficient container that won't hold the temperature nearly as well. So even though opening your freezer in order to cool your room is clearly ridiculous, this project is actually even less efficient.
    Stick with a regular fan or get a real AC. Don't believe anything you see on youtube just because it looks cool. Most of these "diy hacks" on youtube don't work and end up like really bad ideas when you actually think about them.

    And for those who know a bit about physics know that this will increase the net temp of your house. Do to the fact that both your refrigerator and fan are not loss-less, when you freeze ice in your refrigerator it makes your house warming. Your refrigerator transfers the heat from inside the refrigerator to outside, which is still in you house. This is why all AC units are BOTH inside and outside.

    • @shhhpankie
      @shhhpankie 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's why you buy bags of ice too, or use a freezer outside of the air conditioned space. Or you can cool one room in a house by insulating it from the rest of the house. e.g. seal off the air return gap under the door.

      What you're saying is the heat produced from freezing the water is going to raise the temperature of your house. Freeze the water bottles at night when heat isn't an issue, then use the frozen water bottles in the air conditioner during day when it's hot.

    • @Loathomar
      @Loathomar 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      shhhpankie Local cooling could be useful, but bags of ice will quickly become more costly the a low cost AC unit. IE, a ice at $3 per day will cost the same as a $120 AC unit after 40 days.

    • @Loathomar
      @Loathomar 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bourneyesterdayi That would assume you house get to a reasonable temperature at night. There are a lot of places where it is 75+ at night. So, you would trade, 100' days and 75' nights for 90' days and 87' nights... I will pass, thanks.

    to make it last longer, do this inside the cooler, laid it with heavy salt, then crushed ice then, then salt, then ice again, last salt, then sealed or topped it with aluminum foam as insulator. Now closed tight the cooler. This is proven to me. The more salt the longer the ice will last. Please remove the ice from its plastic so salt can react to them. Salt Lowers the Freezing Point
